Some more media stuff :

Fox Spots North : McWilliams-Franklin back to mentor Peters

http://www.foxsportsnorth.com/05/08/12/McWilliams-Franklin-back-to-mentor-Peter/landing_lynx.html?blockID=725042&feedID=5930

quote:

"Watching the tapes, I see a lot of younger me in her, and I think she can help the Minnesota Lynx for many years down the line," McWilliams-Franklin said. "She's an unselfish player, great on defense, has a tenacity and kind of a swag that a lot of players don't have in that four position."

-------------------------

AP wirter D. Campbell, in the Strib:

Defending WNBA champion Lynx might find next title more challenging, but that's fine by them

http://www.startribune.com/sports/lynx/150502895.html

quote:

"We had a lot of fun last year, and that was a big key," Whalen said. "Of course you're going to work hard and there's going to be ups and downs, but if you kind of stay in the moment and stay together and have fun with it then good things can happen."

Lynx win 1st pre-season game 87-85 over CT Sun

Box score --> http://www.wnba.com/games/20120510/MINCON/gameinfo.html

The good, everyone played & scored. The bad, Amber Harris went down with some kind of foot/ankle injury. Team returns to MN tomorrow (other then then 3 Olympians) so she's sure to be looked at once then return.

Another piece of good news from this game is some very nice stats from our draft picks Peters and Wojta.

Harris has a sprained left ankle & is expected to be out 2 to 3 wks to thankgoodness nothing too serious.

AP guy Dave Campbell with a nice article ...

http://www.seattlepi.com/sports/article/WNBA-champion-Lynx-welcome-back-motherly-leader-3551864.php

quote:

McWilliams-Franklin is about as unique of a professional athlete as can be found. She was an English writing and rhetoric major at Division II St. Edward's University in Austin, Texas, who married an Army sergeant she met while playing basketball in Italy. She's into professional wrestling and video games, and she has a dream of starting her own clothing line. She speaks Spanish and Italian.

Another great read by the Stribs Rachel Blount: Lynx's Reeve takes last look back before leaping ahead

http://www.startribune.com/sports/lynx/151321955.html

quote:

But the Lynx cannot hope to do that by remaining static. Reeve noted that in preseason meetings, every player expressed a desire to improve certain facets of her game and set goals to do so. She expects that focus on individual progress to provide plenty of day-to-day motivation, complementing the collective drive to win back-to-back titles.

WNBA doesn’t have the LeaguePass (wish they did) just the LiveAccess feeds over the internet. And starting this season, LiveAccess is no longer free. It will cost a mere $4.99 for the whole season.

My only real issue is that the league waited just hours before the start of the season to inform fans

There can be debate but this really is a steal. Some may want to argue the charge will cost the league tons of fans but that doesn’t fly. $5 is a fast food meal; 2 cups of 'cheap' coffee; a beer (only if during a happy hour special if you’re lucky ). But such is life.

It appears the feed & clarity for the 1st LiveAccess game of the season with Seattle hosting LA tonight was very good by all accounts. (LA came back from 21 down by the way)

2012 In-Depth WNBA Season Preview: Minnesota Lynx

http://wnbalien.wordpress.com/2012/05/18/2012-in-depth-wnba-season-preview-minnesota-lynx/

'You know what makes sense when you win a championship and prove to be one of the better teams in league history? Bringing back everyone who mattered from that team, and going for the repeat. So the Lynx did just that. Early fears that Candice Wiggins might leave through free agency or that Taj McWilliams-Franklin might wish to move on to yet another team ultimately proved unfounded, so the top nine players from last year’s squad return in 2012. And they’ve arguably upgraded the remaining two spots. Injury, complacency, and the big bulls-eye now painted on their back are the only things that look like threats to stop this team from being just as good as they were last year. ...'

Possible, but unlikely. With the season already starting, rosters set and Wojta still transitioning to a new position, it'll probably be next year before she catches on in training camp.

http://www.htrnews.com/article/20120518/MAN02/205180458/Women-s-pro-basketball-Wojta-signed-by-European-club?odyssey=nav%7Chead

GREEN BAY — Though Mishicot graduate and former UW-Green Bay women's basketball All-American Julie Wojta will not be donning a Minnesota Lynx uniform during regular season play, the 18th overall draft pick has inked a contract with Eurocup team Dexia Namur Capitale in Belgium.

The 6-foot forward was waived by the Lynx after competing for a roster spot during its two-week training camp which included two preseason games.

"I knew I was walking into an extremely tough situation as far as making the roster but I'm still very competitive and wanted to make the most of it. I'm so thankful to have the experience attending the Lynx training camp. I loved the experience and can take a lot away from it," Wojta said. "Coach Reeve was very complimentary and told me she wishes she had a spot for me but it's tough with only 11 roster spots. She told me I belong in this league eventually, so that was encouraging to hear."

Wojta is expected to clear waivers in the 48-hour timeframe, making her an unrestricted free agent with the opportunity to sign with another WNBA franchise. However, with the regular season tipping off Sunday, there is a very small chance and window of opportunity for Wojta to join another WNBA team.

"I'll certainly talk with other teams but the chances of her going elsewhere are slim," said Wojta's agent Eric Wiesel.

Looking over the Lynx Roster it becomes rather clear why Wojita got cut. They had nobody else to cut. Here is the bench Wiggins, Wright, Adair, Peters, Harris and our prize off-season acquisition Thorn.

Watched the game, today. A little ragged, but Phoenix probably does that to a lot of teams with their high paced style. It was just the first game, too.

That being said, they shot 57% and continued their rebounding domination from last year.

I watched it too. Not my style since I'm not a BB fan but it was weird.

A MN team that did look ragged, as you say, but in the end whooped their asses

That doesn't happen often in Minny.

I can understand the raggy play right now. After all they had only 2 weeks, and 2 pre season games to get ready and during that, the 3 olympic players had to toto Seattle for workout and game.

It's hard to get that upset about ragged play when the team wins by 20+.

And puts up a point total that they only bested once last year (by a single point).

I was at the game with my son; third row under the baskets (Woo-hoo). There for the Rubio sighting; missed him by that much. The Lynx dominated essentially the entire game, save for some fantastic play early by Charde Houston that kept the game closer for a while.

My favorite player on the Mercury: Bonner, who had a "quiet" 22 points on 7-13.

Game might have been even more of a blowout, save for the heart-stopping injury to Augustus. That seemed to put a check on the opening-day festivities...

At 6-4 & about 135lbs, Bonner is one of the lightweights in the league , her legs are the female version of Cory Brewer crazy thin. But she is a good player.

Sounds like Augustus is day to day. In passing after the game she said she'd be fine & expects to play in the next gm @NY Tue.
Even though Phx was without their 2 best players, I liked what the Lynx showed. All 10 players scored; 9 of the 10 had 2 or more rebounds & 7 players dished assist (22 asst on 44 made baskets) This team will get better as time goes on. The best is yet to come.

Some press :

Strib:Lynx continue to be diamond in town full of cubic zirconia teams

Even though the Lynx lack the same broad appeal and popularity as the
four other professional franchises in town, they provided a reprieve
from the endless loop of frustration. They gave us something to talk
about last summer besides the sad state of our sports teams.

(Reeve) said. "It hasn't been done in 10 years. There's only been a
couple times in our league that we've had back-to-back (champions). We
want to take our place in history. So that's the motivation for these
guys."

* St Paul PPress :

She said she was urged to ride out the rest of the game in the locker
room and receive treatment for her painful rib. But she refused.
"There was no way I was staying back there," she said. "It was pretty
painful, but I wanted to get back to my teammates. It's more than just
me. This was a special day, something special I've waited for all of
my life. I wasn't going to miss it."

* Never mind facts but Tim must have had some mind block and was watching something else when more went off the court :
Wiggins has been w/‘Mone for most of her journey, 5 of her 7 seasons; Wright & Wiggins were the 1st to ‘Mone as they were on the court not Taj; and 6 scored in double figures (he missed Brunson’s 12 pts)

Former gov Jessie the Body brought Mrs. Body to the game sitting courtside. And I thought it kind of odd but Donovan McNabb w/daughter & maybe wife? was in the stands as well. He must have kids still in school here or something ?
