The Lynx have five selections within the first 24 picks. They don't need that many new players. I hope that they can trade up!

I'd rather they trade into next year's (much deeper and more talented) draft. We've had luck doing that before.

Or trade for an established post player to help out Brunson, since Taj won't play forever.

I think Amber Harris is going to be quite good. Adair is already good. We would miss Taj but those two can fill in admirably IMO.

Any word about the Lynx veteran center coming back or not? The temptation has to be to retire a winner, and she is over 40.

Taj has signed 1 yr deals for the last few yrs now. It has been her practice to wait till after the first of the yr to decide if she’ll play. She’s not been known to wait till the last minute, so they’ll know before the draft what she decides to do. She signed w/the Lynx mid Feb of ’11. WNBA free agency is set to open sometime mid Jan-2012, so don’t look for any news till maybe Feb-’12.

Well I am looking forward to the WNBA draft. I hear there are a couple of underclass women that are draft eligible that would both be better than the favorite senior. Griner is the name of one and I forget the name of the other. If they both come out all of a sudden the Lynx stand to gain a very good player. If not whoever they get is unlikely to have any impact.

Right now I see the Lynx's biggest draft need as a True PG to back up Whalen. Somebody real quick with amazing ball skills. Wiggins can back up adequately but she isn't really a PG.

I expect Angel Robinson will get another shot. I was rather surprised when they cut her last year.

I don't recall a woman leaving school early to enter the draft. They don't have the earning power a guy does so the education fall back is important to them

I wonder if the Lynx can package the third pick with the other four picks they have and move up to pick 1? I doubt it.

Was nice the team got some recognition with the Strib Sports Person of the Yr for Seimone
http://www.startribune.com/sports/lynx/136348433.html.
and over in St Paul http://www.twincities.com/sports/ci_19653425 Pioneer Press 2011 Sports Figure of the Year: The Minnesota Lynx as a team.

quote:

Nobody is laughing at the Minnesota Lynx anymore.

Smiling, is more like it.

Who would have expected this? Yesterday's doormats are today's WNBA champions, and say what you want about whether this is the same as winning a title in the NFL, NHL, NBA or MLB, you can't deny we needed this.

After 20 years without a major professional sports title, the Lynx gave us the first downtown parade in the Twin Cities since the 1991 Twins, and it felt good. In a year when the Vikings and Twins were celebrating their 50th anniversaries by threatening their worst marks in Minnesota, it felt really good. In a year when the Timberwolves were the worst team in their league and the Wild stopped filling their arena and one high-profile Gophers team after another couldn't make a postseason game or tournament ... OK, it felt great.

For giving CPR to a sports scene on life support, the Pioneer Press has chosen the Lynx our 2011 Sports Figure of the Year.

We could have singled out Lindsay Whalen or Seimone Augustus or Maya Moore or Cheryl Reeve, perhaps, but this was as much about all of them as it was about all of us. This was a franchise that hadn't even been to the playoffs since 2004, that had never won a single playoff series, and it rolled through the regular season to a league-best 27-7 record.

quote:

Whalen says she doesn't tire of talking about the magical summer of 2011.

"You dream of winning a championship,'' she said. "You don't mind remembering it or chatting about it.''

Nice way to end 2011

I think you're thinking of Elena Delle Donne a 6-5 post @ Univ of Delaware

http://www.usabasketball.com/bios/delle-donne_elena.html

Little background : She had committed to Uconn but left before fall session & went back home to Delaware. Sighted some home sickness in part because of a sister w/health issues that she is very close to. Later she admitted to basketball burnout, didn’t enjoy it anymore. Enrolled at Delaware, freshman year played Volleyball & team made it to the NCAA tourney. Somewhere she found the love again, joined the Delaware basketball team, spent last summer with USA basketball and now has Delaware ranked in the top 25. Her game is being compared to Lauren Jackson of the Seattle Storm.

As far as her or Baylor’s Brittney Griner leaving school early, I don’t expect either to leave early.

But the reason they could declare without much issue would be the rule, if you turn 22 in the calendar year of the draft (or are already 22 or older), you can renounce your remaining NCAA eligibility and declare for the draft.

As for them being better then the odds on favorite to be picked #1 Nneka Ogwumike of Stanford, Griner is 6-8, EDD is 6-5, Nneka is maybe 6-3 on a good day. I think Ogwumike will be a good post at the pro level. She is similar to a Tina Charles now w/CT Sun.

Yes you have the other player right. I would hate it if one of them declared with us picking third. Nice report on the players.

Candice Wiggins re-signed with the Lynx today. Terms of the contract were not revealed.

The fourth-year guard out of Stanford helped the Lynx to the WNBA title last season, averaging 5.9 points and 1.9 rebounds off the bench.

She was the third overall pick in the 2008 draft, and won the WNBA's Sixth Woman award her rookie season.

The Lynx season opens on May 20.

--------------

This is a big signing. I'm sure she could've gone elsewhere for a larger role, more minutes.

Nice to have a Minnesota team in the high rent district

The draft usually takes place within a wk or so after the NCAA Women's Final 4. So some time after April 3 this year.

--------------------------

Now, with Wiggins re-signing, (& Hornbuckle traded to Phx last wk) the Lynx have 9 of the 11 players roster from last season locked down for 2012

My best guess, I expect Houston to find another team eventually, so that leaves 2 spots open for a draft pick & a free agent.

With the early start to the season and camp likely disrupted by players trickling in from overseas, it's huge to have your 5 starters & the 4 prime reserves on your roster returning. I'm a happy camper

So the Lynx have four picks in the draft, but will only keep two? Move up!

Well no, they actually have 6 picks in the upcoming draft. And move up for who?

Hard to move up from the # 3 spot. The 2 teams ahead of us are trying to catch us, so don't look for the Lynx to move up; down is more of a possibility. No one in this draft if worth giving up any of the 9 players returning from last yr. And no teams are giving up their 1st rnd picks in the deeper 2013 draft at this point.

And make that 1 spot left to fill on the roster. Last wk the team signed a 9 yr FA vet Erin Thorn.

http://www.wnba.com/lynx/news/news_thorn_signs_2012_02_13.html

She is a strong 3 pt shooting combo guard. She's a more stable replacement for Hornbuckle. Wiggins & Thorn will be back-up PGs. So I'm looking for a post to fill the final 11th spot on the 2012 roster.

Houston's role was diminishing pretty severely. Wright and Wiggins were the first players off the bench and Harris will likely see a bigger role next year. Not to mention a 1st round draft choice coming in. She wanted to play somewhere were she could get some minutes. They were probably going to have to non tender her and moved up 6 spots in the 2nd round instead.

Yes we are so good that she didn't have much of a role with us but it seems like we could have done better than six spot move up in round two for a talented player like Houston.
