Wayne St eating up some big yards. Down to the Mav's 30 with about 4 mins to go.

Mav's D bends but doesn't break. Big stop on 4th down. Mavs have the ball at their own 30.

Another huge run by Taormina. Mavs inside the Wildcat 40.

EZ TD for Taormina. He walks in untouched.

Mavs tack on the XP. Now 48-27. Huge 4th quarter by Mankato with 21 unanswered pts.

Bednarski has a huge leg. With the wind at his back, he almost made it through the uprights on the KO.

203 yds for Taormina on the day. He's been a great fill in for the injured Nate Gunn over the past few weeks.

Mavs win, moving to 10-0 on the year. Wayne St falls to 5-5. This was a lot closer than I expect, with the tie game after 3 quarters, but the Mavs finally woke up and played like they're capable of playing in the 4th quarter.

Taormina deserves a game ball. He stepped up and took the team on his shoulders with over 100 of his 200+ yds in that final quarter.

Congrats man. Helluva roll going, that's fun.
Winona Pounding the Stangs here today.
SMSU has officially let the season get to them, pretty much mailing this one in.
35-7 last I checked.

Winona was probably angry after their poor performance in Mankato the previous week and ended up taking out their frustration on SMSU.

I caught part of the delayed telecast of Sioux Falls at Upper Iowa, and that was a surprisingly tight 7-7 defensive game at halftime. But in the 2nd half, Sioux Falls finally got some drives together and ended up winning 19-7. Sioux Falls has a good defense (has been ranked #1), and it will be a good test for the Mavs next week. However, the Sioux Falls offense doesn't seem all that impressive, considering what I saw from how their offense fared against the Upper Iowa defense compared to the Mankato offense a few weeks prior..

Something else I found interesting is how young the Mavs are. They've only got 11 seniors on the squad. Several of their key position players are sophomores or freshman: QB Schlichte, RB Gunn (injured) and WR Zylstra are all sophpomores. QB Ekowa and RB Taormina are Freshman. Assuming they continue to improve year-to-year, they could enjoy a lot of success in upcoming years.

See other thread for Mankato vs Bemidji hockey talk. drew will be representin' BSU in person tomorrow night. I'm hoping to get there for one series this season. I went to my first game last year. Last game of the year...our playoff loss to Bowling Green. Sanford Center is a jewel of the north.

WOOHOO!!! Mavs defeat Sioux Falls 27-23 in an absolute nail-biter. Mavs were down 10 points with just over 5 minutes to play, and managed to score 2 unanswered TDs in the final minutes. MSU-Mankato ends the regular season 11-0, and champions of the NSIC.

They should earn a 1st round bye in the D2 playoffs.

Mavs got hose by the selection committee. Instead of locking up a #1 seed and a bye, they got a #2 bid instead. Doesn't make any sense, and reeks of a biased agenda by the committee.

On the bright side, it might give them a big chip on their shoulder heading into the playoffs, and that's rarely a bad thing.

Yup, that's a rip off.

Mavs escape the first round with a 16-13 OT win over CSU-Pueblo. Wind was a huge factor 30 mph gusts from the NW. It really affected the kicking and passing for both teams. Mavs had 3 turnovers which led to a majority of the CSU-P points on a short field. Mavs got a boost from returning RB, Nate Gunn who had over 100 yds. Bednarski's kicking was the difference in this game, as he was able to hit a 37yd FG into the win in OT, while the CSU-Pueblo kicker wasn't able to overcome the wind from 40.

Mavs will host the winner of the Sioux Falls vs. Midwestern State game in the next round next week.

Next game is on Saturday: Midwestern at Mankato with a noon kickoff. Mavs will need to play a lot better than they did yesterday. 3 costly turnovers (2 INTs, 1 Fumble) led to 10 points for Pueblo and potentially took another Mav score off the board. The INTs were avoidable - one was an errant throw and the other was as ill-advised throw deep into triple coverage. Credit the Mav defense for hold the opponent in check for most of their drives. However, the offense is going to have to improve their ball security if they want to move on.

MSU-Mankato demolished Midwestern St 63-21 in the 2nd round of the Div 2 playoff. Midwestern St had been 10-0, was ranked 5th in the nation, and was averaging nearly 45 pts per game. Minnesota state's running game was too much for them, racking up over 200 yds in the first qtr and over 500 yds by the end. The Mav's never needed to punt. Midwestern scored the first TD, then Minnesota St scored 49 unanswered points in a rout. In the 4th qtr, the teams traded TDs back and forth, but this was one was never in doubt.

Now the Mavs await the results of the later game between Texas A&M Commerce and Central Washington to see if they'll be hosting Commerce for round 3, or travelling to Washington.

Commerce managed a big 2nd half comeback over Washington for the win. Mankato will be hosting another round!
