I see that Winfield is getting some steam for going in the first round. McShay had him going before our picks in his most recent mock. So I don't know who would be the bigger steal- Becton at #22 or Winfield at 58?

I heard Mike Tice on the radio this morning talking about the offensive line prospects. Usually we should expect some interesting opinions from him, but I found him strangely unwilling to share hard opinions about the players. The one exception was that he said he didn't like one of the OT's who "everybody thinks" will go so early. I'm sorry that I can't remember which one it was. It might have been Becton. Not sure. I wasn't listening to him so carefully because I thought he was talking about players who had no chance to be there for our team. When he came to the players we are talking about, he said that the Vikings scouts "know what they're doing and don't need me to tell them what to think". I was thinking that I'm not a scout and that's why I was spending my time to listen to him. I get frustrated listening to an interview on the radio where almost all of the time is spent doing small talk. I at least want to be rewarded with one or two insights. I didn't get any from Mr. Tice today. I was disappointed because I have always been his fan.

Hopefully he was doing his best to not tip his hand about what is were hoping for in the draft. Becton is 365 pounds and has some fat on him, but ran a 5.15 or so 40 IIRC. That is simply ridiculous.

That my friend would be a dream draft...

I get bored and do a lot of these and they are kind of fun. However, when you can see how all the players are ranked on the simulator it's pretty easy to manipulate the system to get dream drafts. That player haul would be awesome, but weak on CB, DT, WR (no offense intended to Tyler) and OL help.

I'm not sure what you mean. My beef was that he was not sharing any hard opinions- just listing names. The names that everybody here already knows. I wanted more than a name, but a coach's perspective on the player and honest opinions.

The tidbit that I did get from the Tice interview is that the Vikes oline would be much stronger moving Reiff to RG. He is a right side guy according to Tice.

Maybe:

LT Udoh/Draft
LG Samia
C Garrett
RG Reiff
RT O'Neil

In this scenario, I would have Samia battle Reiff for RG. Then draft a LG (Ruiz, Cushenberry, Biadasz) or trade for Thuney.

I like Aiyuk. Will this push him out of the first round? Sorry for the long link. I tried twice.

LOL my brain was just going to Mike Zimmer instead of Tice. Auto-pilot.

He is a very intriguing wildcat QB and short yardage RB. Oh yeah he also plays WR.

Factoring in compensatory picks, more than 6 times as many players are drafted after round #1 than during round #1.

So you have a *MUCH* much better shot of getting a stud in the 1st round.

Almost half of them were taken in the first 30 picks.

Quality tackles are hard to get say outside the top 2 rounds. I bet guards and centers are easier to find later.

We'll start with 2019.

1st team:
LT: Ronnie Staley. 1st round, 6th overall.
LG: Quentin Nelson. 1st round, 6th overall.
C: Jason Kelsey. 6th round.
RG: Zack Martin. 1st round, 16th overall.
RT: Ryan Ramczyk. 1st round. 32nd overall.

2nd team:
LT: David Bakhtiari. 4th round.
LG: Joel Bitonio. 2nd round.
LG: Joe Thuney. 3rd round.
C: Rodney Hudson. 2nd round.
RG: Marshal Yanda. 3rd round.
RT: Mitchell Schwartz. 2nd round.

Draft them early.

4 of the 5 1st teamers were 1st round picks.

1st round: 4
2nd round: 3
3rd round: 2
4th round: 1
6th round: 1

I think like any position, you can certainly hit on a good one in rounds 3 through 7, but your chances are much better in the first 2 rounds.

Out of the first rd (5 years / from 2015-2019) 6 OL were picked top 10, 3 were all-pro in 2019 ... even top ten blue chippers are a 50 / 50 proposition (if your standard is all-pro 2019).

It doesn't say much. Unless you are losing enough to draft that high and wondering which positions are historically higher percentage to draft that high, or you are thinking of selling the farm to move up that high for an OL.

EDIT: oops, I see Kelsey was 6th round not 1st rd 6th overall. So its less than 50 / 50.

Its too bad it took Spielman 5 years to realize that OL in the first 4 rounds have a better chance of being good than OL after the first 4 rds.

The skill positions, in my opinion are more critical than center and guards. Of course that would include the QB and the WR's. On defense that would include the DE's and the CB's. Players at those positions are in position to make the big plays of the game. I should include tackles because they are the ones going against those elite pass rushers. Even running backs though, and I know that many of you will disagree with me here, can really make a big difference in the game. For example, Dalvin Cook vs. Brian O'Neil. Both were selected in the second round and both are considered to be quality players. If one is out due to an injury, which one will be missed more? I would say Cook. And that is while saying O'Neil plays an impactful position.

So I guess I'm going to defend Spielman here. Now, he did spend a first rounder on a LB (Barr), but for the most part he has been drafting corners, wide receivers and QB's with his first round selection. He did draft one DT and he gave up a first round selection in a trade for a QB. Am I forgetting any of his picks? Of course it's been hit or miss, but he has largely gone for the skill position players.

3rd round: 2
4th round: 1
6th round: 1

Out of the first rd (5 years / from 2015-2019) 6 OL were picked top 10, 3 were all-pro in 2019 ... even top ten blue chippers are a 50 / 50 proposition (if your standard is all-pro 2019).

It doesn't say much. Unless you are losing enough to draft that high and wondering which positions are historically higher percentage to draft that high, or you are thinking of selling the farm to move up that high for an OL.

EDIT: oops, I see Kelsey was 6th round not 1st rd 6th overall. So its less than 50 / 50.

Top 10 pick? Trade down, teams will overpay.

If you don't have a decent OL and DL (which includes Cs, Gs, and DTs), your skill players are just flashy and expensive toys that only get you so far.

Spielman has drafted OL very very poorly. Even if Bradbury turns it around, he has ignored the position over the course of his personnel director 2006-2011 drafts / GMship 2012-2019 drafts. (He has not ignored it recently but it remains to be seen how well he has addressed the position)

1–Kalil, Bradbury
2–Cook, Loadholt, Elflein, O'Neill
3–
4–Clemmings, Beavers, Samia

GZUZ that is pathetic by any standard ... its so bad people in here are excited by a 6th rd. pick from Elon because he hasn't been cut yet.

God help us if Bradbury continues to struggle, Spielman will only have Loadholt and O'Neill as decent OL draft picks – in total – from 2006-2019!. (well, Kalil was good for one season but then Spiels blew that by keeping him too long; yes the jury is still out on Samia Udoh)

He needs to have another 2015 draft with 2 studs (Hunter, Diggs), a strong starter (Kendricks), and a legitimate starter (Waynes) to dig himself and Zimmer out of their current situation.
