Cine-hoopla is blowing Sloter-talk out of the water.

Yet it remains to be seen if he will be on the team after cutdowns.

I haven’t heard much about him in training camp reports the last two offseasons. Correct me if I’m wrong …

Again, there are young guys given a chance because they play their asses off in practice and on special teams … and there are players handed roles because of their draft position. It flies in the face of the competition-based criteria that all coaches talk up but abuse when their egos are on the line.

Cine at this point smacks of saving face.

Play well against the PHI ones/twos … then it may be worth some debate.

As I said, every year some magical safety gets a few people excited. Then said safety is released, never to be mentioned again except in 'lol, remember x' posts years later.

Doubt Philly plays their ones, and the twos may play just a little while.

Are you so sure? Ones dont play in the third game at all …

Or is it because they fear Cine?

one has to believe that lewis cine has been through a lot over the past two years....

physically...psychologically...emotionally...spiritually...considering his injury, I can't imagine breaking bones as he did and then running on that ankle the way he does....

also, consider the embarrassment and humiliation he's gone through being considered a complete failure after those lofty highs he's had...his family, friends, teammates past and present, the media....

nobody from the team has spoken about him, or at least I haven't heard it...everyone and their mother has already written him off as a bust....

that game against the browns was like a lewis cine highlight reel from his days in Georgia...sure, they were 2nd/3rd stringers, but one could make an argument that the browns team and its players represented the best team that cine has ever played against, and his college team won the national title - and he won the MVP of that game....

i believe that flores left cine out there for the entire game because he knew that that's what lewis cine needed - to play himself out of the funk he's been in....

for himself and for all here, i hope that cine has found the player that he once was, and could be again...

Great feel good story.

Meanwhile, Cine has a contract with $11.5 million fully guaranteed. Halfway into that contract his stats on defense (I couldn't believe it so checked a couple of sites) are:
- 1 assisted tackle.

That's it.

so, the question is, what do we do going forward?....

i proposed trading bynum for draft capital and playing more lewis cine...what about you?....

I'm not trading away the guy who led our team in tackles and was 2nd in PDs because another guy finally had a good preseason game.

for sure, play it safe....

I can't say that I'm in a good position to make that decision. Clearly, Bynum has achieved more on the field than Cine has. It's not even close. BUT, I don't know these players as well as the coaching staff does. My suggestion, is that whoever Flores wants is the one I'd keep...not who Kwesi wants, but Flores. I'd trust his evaluation over the GM that drafted Cine so high.

All I can say about Cine:

When given an opportunity to play he balled out. 10 tackles, a sack and an INT is a great day for any safety, no matter the competition. Sure he's buried on the depth chart for the time being.

The other thing is that every "expert" analyzing the game said he looked different than the last two years. More like they guy they expected when they drafted him.

My prediction is they retain him on the roster.

Right now it is a Low risk maneuver, because 1. there is nobody cheaper out there to replace him. 2. There is not a better option for 4th safety on the roster and 3 a little bit of ego here on KAM's part as it was his first draft pick.

If they keep him.. they will keep 5 safeties.
(imo, in this order)

Harrison Smith
Cam Bynum
Josh Metellus
Theo Jackson
Lewis Cine

I think they are pretty high on Jackson.

Philly has already made a fear-based decision. If Lewis Fear is out there they will play the 3rds for just a series then wheel out newly-crowned 4ths and 5ths from the bleachers.

Fear is also #3 ranked in the UFC. Long term he wants his legend to be greater than Chuck Norris and will instill fear into anyone that gets in his way.

Agree with that. Ward/Thompson?/McCain/etc are going to have to do something great although depending on the FS-SS requirements Fear may already have a roster spot.

If they go with six safeties (with some interchangeability) again, Fear IMO definitely makes the roster.

Thats not Lewis Fear stretching before a preseason game, thats Lewis Fear trying to reduce the effects of fracking in Pennsylvania.

Bynum is 26 and one of the better players on defense. He's not great, who knows what he will command as an FA if it comes to that, and realistically it is a tremendous leap of faith to expect Cine to pan out.

Right now the battle is between Jackson, Ward, McCain, and Cine for perhaps two roster spots. That has to first play out.

for whatever reason, the team doesn't seem to want to pay another safety after overpaying for harrison over the last three years, and now they're paying metallus a bet, too...from what I've heard, kwesi has had zero conversations with bynum's people....

i'm thinking they keep cine and jackson on the 53....

we have cine, metallus, ward, and smith under contract for 2025...jackson is an rfa...I've always been a big harrison smilth fan, but he's probably overstayed his financial welcome with the team....

That's a speculative leap but we all have opinions. I can see them wanting to keep Bynum more than not wanting him, and believe this will be Smith's last year.

darren 'doogie' wolfson, from 5 eyewitness news is a weekly guest on one of the skor north youtube shows, and he, supposedly has 'scoops' that come from the front office and he says that the vikes are not interested in giving bynum a new contract - i believe that they expect he'd want too much money....

Not sure what you mean by "accounts for" but brass tacks... per OverTheCap a cut means a $2.3M cap hit, spread over this year and next.

I don't know if a team can elect to take the entire hit in the current year or they have to split it out. Low figure so not worth looking up.

Supposedly?

I question the validity/authenticity of a person having the scoop from the front office then turning around to make the scoop public. Such a person gets to do that once.

Doogie is actually pretty tuned in on the Vikes.
However, TONS of things can happen between now and next off season.
No way to say if he'll be resigned or not.

Not sure what you mean by "accounts for" but brass tacks... per OverTheCap a cut means a $2.3M cap hit, spread over this year and next.

i use spotrac because it's what I've always used....

looking at over the cap - the $2.3mm cap hit that you mention is cine's 2025 cap hit - we have to add '24 & '25 together to get the total dead cap....

cine signed an $11.5mm/4yr contract...he's already been paid $7.5mm = balance of $4mm unpaid. but then factor into that the prorated signing bonus, and you get something like $2.7mm, and you get $6.7mm of unaccounted-for cap hits...

over the cap show $6.7mm at dead cap....

my intention was to show that it's more expensive to cut him than keep him...the numbers are wiggly because of the cap hit rules and when you have to take the charges....

You are looking at pre-June 1 cut figures. It's August 20 so it's less. Select Post June 1 from the dropdown menu.

You'll find the Cap Savings (in this case a loss) is less too.

And $2.3M is not Fear's 2025 cap hit on OverTheCap. For 2025, it's $3.6M in dead cap and a wash ($0) in cap savings whether pre or post June 1.

He has a fully guaranteed contract so the dead cap if he's cut today is a factor for this year and next. In short, his contract is the shit gift that keeps on giving, err taking. I don't think he'll be cut in part because of cap implications and the added cost of signing a replacement.

Lewis Cine

I think they are pretty high on Jackson.

presently, in 2024 lewis cine accounts for $3.3mm in cap space...if we cut him he accounts for $5.4mm in cap space...trade him, and he accounts for $1.4mm in cap space....

Not sure what you mean by "accounts for" but brass tacks... per OverTheCap a cut means a $2.3M cap hit, spread over this year and next.

I don't know if a team can elect to take the entire hit in the current year or they have to split it out. Low figure so not worth looking up.

.
i use spotrac because it's what I've always used....

looking at over the cap - the $2.3mm cap hit that you mention is cine's 2025 cap hit - we have to add '24 & '25 together to get the total dead cap....

cine signed an $11.5mm/4yr contract...he's already been paid $7.5mm = balance of $4mm unpaid. but then factor into that the prorated signing bonus, and you get something like $2.7mm, and you get $6.7mm of unaccounted-for cap hits...

over the cap show $6.7mm at dead cap....

my intention was to show that it's more expensive to cut him than keep him...the numbers are wiggly because of the cap hit rules and when you have to take the charges....

Do you have to replace him though?
You don't really need 5 safeties.

Yes, you need another body.

Guys at that level on the depth chart typically need to be good at special teams.
Cine is not from what I've seen... did not play much if any last year.

Maybe with another strong showing he solidifies his spot.

I'd say pre season game 3 is a very big one for him.
(and i still think Vikes would love to trade him for ANYTHING)

It depends. 3 safeties was our base defense last year. If we repeat that, 5 might be needed.

% of Defensive Snaps played:

Bynum: 99.20%
Smith: 98.41%
Metellus: 94.16%

True, the 'replacement' can be anyone already signed at any position. I was thinking if they still want to carry x number of safeties. Flores carried 4-5 safeties and 1-2 hybrids last year. It was kind of difficult to classify Ward and Thompson. And then Jackson showed up late in the year.

Local buzz is that he has looked solid... however, he got cleated early in camp and has been out so that is with pretty limited looks.

He got cleated like the first few days they put pads on.

Hard to get a feel on anybody in shorts.

The team is going to look super different this year than the year before, more than most years it seems. QB, RB, maybe both Guards. If Addison is suspended and Hockensen’s injury lingers … #2-3 WRs will be different to start… Tonyan is another mystery but we’ll need something more than Oliver Mundt until TJ returns. And that’s on the ‘stable’ side of the team. On defense? Holy cow … Tillery, Greenard, van Ginkel, Cashman, Gilmore, Griffin …

A ton of new backups and rotational players as well.

Crazy turnover. Which is exciting but hard to project, at least for me.

Its really going to help cutting our teeth against the Giants to start.

I think Flores did an amazing job last year with limited personnel at IDL and CB. If the added pieces are as good as PFF says they are against the pass and we stay healthy......

The roster is even more difficult to project because there is not a series of step-down roster limits, just the one to 53. Even though there will be releases before that, I wouldn't be surprised to see the main pool of players released on the final day.

Thanks for the info on Tillery. I read he got cleated but didn't think that would keep him out this long. Injuries are keeping this offseason prep "interesting" for sure. We have a very tough schedule, on paper, coming out of the gate. Could get ugly early.

Before March, I would have asked for:

QB change of any kind … check
(1A Draft a potential starter … check; 1B sign a FA bridge /backup … check)

RB change … check

IOL redo - all three positions … two out of three checks
(if reports are true that Brandel is LG and Ingram is now a backup [to Risner?])

Upgrade #3 WR … unchecked
(I am very encouraged by Nailor, we’ll see; Addison missing a few games if/when complicates it)

Upgrade DL … unchecked

Resign Hunter / Wonnum or replace … check
(Greenard, Van Ginkel and Turner … next to QB … was the team’s best offseason maneuvering)

Improve/overhaul CB … check
(a major overhaul with possibly 4 new players depending on who sticks of Gilmore/Griffin/Moreau/Shelley)

I wasnt giving it a lot of thought but our kicker has a chance to be much better.

……….
Just to be clear, a check doesn’t automatically equate to improvement, thats hasty pudding. It will take some time to evaluate that … but … the regime has finally put itself on the line and addressed/given attention to a lot of issues in one offseason.

Encouraging.
