True. Sometimes you could make the argument that Ek is the most important forward on this team. He and Brodin are two of our best penalty killers. Jesper held a 1-0 lead despite the Wild being out shot 20-4 at one point. Then Trenin took that absolutely bone headed penalty.

I can't complain about the effort. The Avs are deeper and faster. They just have more.

My real complaint about the game was that Manson wasn't ejected for that butt-ending bullshit.

Agreed. The fact that they concluded it was an "attempted" hit with the end of his stick was absurd. We all saw the video. Multiple times. It was more than an attempt. It absolutely connected.

Steep hill to climb now. Winning three in a row is always tough, but against a team as good as the AVs - it would be epic if they can do it.

It wouldn't have mattered but it was a ridiculous call. How is 'a failed attempt' a better outcome than a success when you purposely use the butt-end of your stick to a guys head?

If the Wild wanted to go old school tomorrows game would resemble Slap Shot and winning would be secondary....
Just make sure to go after MacKinnon and Makar and do it often and hard.
Since the NHL wants to keep the dirty shit in the game it would serve them right. '

It wouldn't have mattered, but there is no place for that shit in the game of hockey. It was deliberate and it was right by McCarron's eye. Manson is one of the dirtiest players in hockey. The NHL should lower the boom on him, but they won't because he plays for the Avs.

Agree 100%. That's why I don't understand why they didn't just toss him? "He meant it but didn't land a solid blow" seems like a very weird justification for not tossing an asshole. That said, even if they did, we might win that game, but this series is over.

We needed Herculean efforts by our superstars but they are just "pretty good".

Sad part of this approach is that our best PK guys are the guys that could pull that off. We'd get crushed 5-0 because of our lousy PK options with those guys in the box.

It would send a msg for next year though

We need more Canadians and less Swedes to play that style of game.

The most obvious part was when Hughes faked the pass back and flew by everyone.

They are doing things too predictable bringing the puck up and passing too much. Just don't bring it weak tomorrow night---tons of shots and bringing it to the goal.

The first goal had their goaltender in tears yet they didn't attack.

We knew they weren't scoring after the 1st. The only question was, do they give up 2 or 3? LOL

DENVER — The Minnesota Wild tried to play a 40-minute penalty kill on Wednesday night to extend their second-round series against the Colorado Avalanche to Game 6.

That’s not a good strategy, especially when your penalty kill is historically bad

Ultimate MN choke. And ohhhh so predictable. Don't go up 3-0 in the first period.

That goal Wallstedt allowed from the blue line was inexcusable. Just imagine if Gus had done that.

The best goalies give up a bad one here and there. Gus gave up three bad ones in his last start alone. He's been that way since the Olympics.

Aren't you going to chime in with how good the Twins did?...oh wait...

This team is so frustrating to watch. When they are on their game and skating they can play with anybody, including the Avs. The problem is they only play that way off and on and always seem to sag at the worst times. Last nights game started out so good I couldn't believe it, but of course, once they were up 3-0 it was like a switch has hit and we went into the old prevent a win defensive mode. That may have worked if we didn't still have 2 full periods to play. Oh well, this season was a lot more fun than I expected and it should be a very interesting off season.

The biggest problem is that Eriksson Ek has an outsized importance to the Wild and he is constantly injured. As soon as he lost an edge and went feet first into the boards against Dallas, I knew our playoff run wouldn't last long. No way were we beating the Avs without him.

We need to trade Ek for a bigger center.

We need Guerin to get a couple of centers before next season starts. Ek is so important to this team and will continue to be, but we need more than him and Yurov at center. Hartman just plain and simple shouldn't be our 1C playing with Kirill. It would be really nice to have a playoff run with Ek staying healthy all the way through, but the way he plays the game makes that very iffy. We need more up the middle, plain and simple, preferably with young legs...

I'm going to believe it for eternity. We should have won 4-3 because that goal they disallowed earlier absolutely WAS a goal. It hit his forearm, not his hand.

We need to trade Ek for a bigger center.

Eriksson Ek already is a big center (6'3 210lbs). The Wild have a lot of big centers. McCarron 6'6 232lbs. Nico Stern 6'3 206lbs. Danila Yurov 6'1 195 lbs. Charlie Stramel is waiting in the wings at 6'3 220lbs.

We need another high end center to go with Ek, not replace him.

Yeap, agree. #1 C (size be damned). Ek at 2 and McCarron on the 4th. Then figure it out between Hartman and Yurov at the 3. Maybe move Hartman to wing. I'm super curious to see what they do with the D too. That needs a big upgrade if they are going to make it next year. Possible coach too. I like JH's but he has flaws.

I think the defense is the more immediate need. It's reasonable to assume year 1 to year 2 growth in Yurov. Now that he is out of college and signed, I really look forward to seeing Stramel. Billy can probably assess and address center at the deadline.

The defense needs a lot of help. First, extending Hughes is the most important move of the off season. Second, our second pairing is old and fragile. Brodin was also a key loss in the Avs series. Third, we always hear about the defensive depth in our system, but they always seem to plateau in the AHL to the point that they can't even beat out Bogo for a spot.

3-0 in the first period is the most dangerous lead in hockey…for the Wild anyway.

But look I’m not going to over scrutinize the last game. It’s pointless. The series went how I thought it would go. Colorado is the best team in the NHL. The Wild stole one game and that was it.

And the season went about how I thought too. In previous years they looked a lot like a playoff bubble team, 1st round elimination at best…and that’s what happened. This year, the core players were taking a step up, they acquired a star midseason, and they looked like a team to get past the first round but not enough depth to contend for the cup…and again that’s what happened.

The Wild are who we thought they were.

I was kind of shook when they were showing Hynes' post season stats. He was 0 - 5 (now 0 - 6) when facing elimination, and his other post-season stats were not good. Is it time for a coaching change?

Yeah, I forgot about Stramel and if we resign McCarron we can get by until the deadline. As for defense I think Hunt has a good chance to be a regular but we will be more help there. Bogo was a 1st round pick back in the day, he's just aging out after a good career just like Spurg and Jimmy. We need fresh legs on the blue line for sure.
