Torii Hunter has declined the Twins' offer to manage the team. He doesn't want to uproot his family and move to MN, and he's not interested in moving away from his family.

I don't think they offered him a job. I think they offered him an interview and he thought about it and didn't want to manage here.

I am ok with that.

According to the New York Times, the Twins have narrowed the field to four candidates and Nick Punto is not one of them.

The final 4 appears to be Rowson, Shelton, former Seattle manager Scott Servais and Cubs bench coach Ryan Flaherty.

Rowson or Flaherty please.

Two guys that failed elsewhere don't excite me. Shelton may get a little of a pass because it was Pittsburgh whose ownership might be worse than ours....but still. No success despite the young talent....

Pittsburgh has the best ballpark in the world, but their business model is similar to the Twins. Shelton deserves another shot.

Maybe he can be Rowson's bench coach?

That would be fine with me. Word is the Twins would prefer someone they are familiar with. That would indicate Rowson or Shelton.

Derek Shelton returning to Twins as manager, sources say

The Minnesota Twins are hiring former Pittsburgh Pirates manager Derek Shelton to be the team's new manager, sources confirmed to ESPN's Jeff Passan on Wednesday.

Shelton, who was fired on May 8 as the Pirates quickly slipped into last place in the National League Central, will replace Rocco Baldelli, who was fired by Minnesota on Sept. 29.

Shelton formerly served as bench coach of the Twins in 2018 and 2019, which was Baldelli's first season in Minnesota.

He then was named manager of the Pirates in November 2019 as part of a franchise-wide reset by owner Bob Nutting. It was his first major league managing job after serving as a coach in various capacities in Tampa Bay, Toronto and Minnesota, and he went 306-440 in his five-plus seasons with Pittsburgh.

Pittsburgh won less than 40% of its games in Shelton's first three seasons before taking a step forward in 2023 when it won 76 games. Paul Skenes' arrival in 2024 gave the franchise another jolt, and the Pirates were in playoff contention until an August swoon. In 2025, the Pirates' offense under Shelton languished near the bottom of the NL.

The Twins, who were expected to contend for the AL Central title this season, faltered in June and became active at the trade deadline, sending away 10 players while cutting $26 million from the payroll. The team went 23-43 after the All-Star break to finish fourth in the division with a 70-92 mark.

The Twins finished with the fourth-worst record in the major leagues and their worst mark since 2016.

Attendance swooned at Target Field this season, with the Twins finishing with an 81-home game total of a little more than 1.7 million tickets sold, their lowest number in a non-pandemic season since 2000, when they played at the Metrodome and finished 69-93.

The New York Post first reported news on Shelton's hiring with the Twins.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Really going out of their way to excite the fans here, aren't they?

Let's see, Managed so bad in Pittsburgh that they fired him mid season. career as a mgr .400 or so winning percentage.

The only thing I can give him a pass on is that Pittsburgh's ownership is cheaper than the Pohlads.

But when you don't care if you succeed, he's probably the perfect hire.

First Interview question for Derek Shelton: "so when things go predictably bad because we've traded anyone of any value away, are you willing to be the scapegoat when we suck?"
Shelton: "Sure"
Falvey: "your're hired!"

Pittsburgh is as big of shit show as the MN job and the only highlight is he did get them to 76 wins the last two years with a crap everyday lineup.

It's hard to believe attendance was so low in 2000. That was Johan's rookie season. I remember it well. Fun team to follow every day. That's the year I really started getting excited about the Twins and if I remember correctly, when I started posting at the Strib. In a way, the 2000 Twins are the reason you've been with me on this 25-year journey.

Shelton was being groomed as a future Twins manager from the beginning. He was the only holdover from Molitor's staff to stay with Rocco. That was his stepping-stone to a managerial job. We are a step up from Pittsburgh, and could potentially be much more. You realize he's probably learned a lot more about managing since they hired Rocco over Shelton, right? By your way of thinking, nobody would ever be able to move up the ladder.

The Pirates finished a game ahead of the Twins in a tougher division. Not sure how that makes Twins a step up from the Pirates. Age has not diminished Matt's gift of pretzel logic.

Shelton, 55, does not have a history of success managing at the MLB level. Over six total seasons in Pittsburgh, he never once produced a winning record, a single playoff berth, or even a single top-three finish in the division. As it stands right now, Shelton’s career mark as a manager is a very underwhelming 306-440 (.410).

Oh yeah, that inspires confidence and excitement.

Do you know the reason we finished the season so poorly was that we traded away some of our best vets to replenish our prospect list? Really bad take, Tim.

And why did we have to replenish our prospect lists through trade?

Because they aren't doing a good job developing talent?

You just walked right into one of Sweens favorite criticisms of the Twins FO.

Baldelli had the talent until they traded it all away and still couldn't muster a competitive team. Then they traded away almost the entire bullpen. Shelton will be working under the same circumstances. Only he gets to start the season with no bullpen and by the time Falvey is done with this offseason, probably wont have much of a rotation either.

There are two reasons they hired Shelton. 1. Falvey is familiar with him. and 2. he's cheap.

I hold out no hope for this team to be anywhere near competitive over the next few seasons. Scratch that, We will compete with the White Sux to determine who is the worst team in the division.

In related news. The Washington National have hired Blake Butera who was not even born yet when the Twins last won the World Series as their manager

He does not appear to be related to Sal or Drew.
