Well at least the Gophers are showing that they deserve to be there. Hopefully the pre-game jitters have left them by now and they can put a solid game together.

Well Pittman and Abrahms, just the Jay Bilas predicted, the Gophers had no answer for.

I am still proud of Tubby's boys, only dissappointed in how they started the 2nd half, too much milk and cookies or something. When Abrahms hit 4 3's in a row, 3 before and one after a timeout, I felt that was the nail.

Michigan wins, still hate their basketball program.

Couldn't sink a shot in the second half to save the game.

Still a step up from previous seasons, and it looks like the recruiting class for next year is promising. But what a bummer to be done.

And now the hockey team is behind 2-0 in the second. Sheesh!

Give Texas credit.  They played very well.

All things considered, I'll take a NCAA one-and-done this year.  It's something to build on.  They made great strides.  They're young.  Next year they should come into big 10 play as one of the favorites.

Even with a quick exit, making the tourney is good for a program in the Gopher's position.  It's a stamp of legitimacy.

Just what I was thinking while switching back and forth.
Not close, really.
Terrible at scoring right now.
Missed 10 straight shots when the lead went from 3 to 15, and they were decent shots.
They had a scorer, we didn't/don't.

Man, wouldn't Aldrich and Woodside look good in Maroon and Gold?
The two things this Gohers team lacked.
And both in-state products.
Worked out well for them, great careers for both.

Aldrich has really improved.  He came on in spurts last season, but he's so much better this year.  I'm not a Kansas fan, but I'd love to see him stay for four.  He has a chance to learn a lot more, and end up with a nice nba career.

Minnesota's Mr. Basketball: Royce White of Hopkins

David Joles, Star Tribune
Hopkins High big man Royce White
The 6-foot-7 player led the undefeated Royals in scoring at about 16 points per game. White is headed to the University of Minnesota.

Interested to see this kid in Maroon and Gold.
Liked what I saw in the state games, pretty strong already.
Tenacious D'er.

What's up with Travis Busch transferring to Colorado State? I'm miss his Punto-like hustle.

They didn't give him a scholrship for his 5th year. They got younger players coming in

Too bad for Busch. You'd think they'd show a little loyalty to a guy wrapping up his education at a fine institution like the U of M. But I guess it's all about winning.

It's sad and great at the same time.

Sad- a hard working kid has to transfer over a numbers game.  Sad- CBB is all about winning and $$ and Tubby knows it better than anyone.

Great- Better players coming in and Tubby is putting the best talent he can get out there.

BTW, I read yesterday that the first pre season poll has the Gophers at 16. When was the last time a Gopher was rated before the season began?

If I had to guess I would says it's been since Michael Thompson was there.  Even Clems good teams didn't start off that high.

Tonight should be fun. My son and I are heading over to the Salvation Army gym in St. Paul to watch the Howard Pulley Pro Am league kick off tonight. Paul Carter, Devron Bostick, Colton Iverson, Al Nolen, Lawrence Westbrook, Blake Hoffbarber and Rodney Williams Jr. should all be in action tonight.

Starts at 7:00 and the games are free. Stop at Cossetta's for a couple of slices first.

Tim, what'd you think? There were a couple of guys missing that I would've liked to see, but it was still a fun night. Rodney Williams has hops that are unreal. His tip slam at the end of the first half was remarkable.

Paul Carter looks pretty solid to me. I've always liked his jump shot form, and I think he just needs more reps to be successful--his stroke looked smooth tonight. I think he'll be one of the Gophers' better contributors next year. Devron Bostick looked lost, for the most part. For a great juco scorer like he was, he really cannot shoot. It's one thing if you just have an off night, because everyone does. It's another thing when you miss as badly as he does. The high school kids were interesting--Calcaterra looks ungainly and soft (probably like most 17 year-olds who are 6'10). Jacob Thomas is a player--hopefully he gets his academics in order, because he can really fill it up.

In the second game, Blake Hoffarber still couldn't hit the broad side of a barn. Rodney looked super athletic but raw. He was pretty lazy, and doesn't have a great understanding of team offense. Al Nolen still looked like he didn't know what to do offensively. Johnnie Gilbert is still a man child down low. It was nice seeing Ariel McDonald again. Talk about a blast from the past.

All in all, a really fun night--if any of you can get down there for these games, go for it. You're not going to see purist basketball, because nobody plays defense and everyone goes 1-on-1 and jacks up threes. But that doesn't mean it isn't entertaining.

I would agree with that assessment Pete overall. Williams has freakish athletic ability. I saw him do a reverse ally oop slam in the Gatorade Classic that made last night's tip slam look like a boring lay up. He had some impressive blocks last night too. All in all you can tell that he has to get a lot stronger and his game needs some refining, but his upside is huge.

Pete, the thing that stood out to me the most last night was old man Ariel McDonald taking the young whelps to school. That man still has a lot of game. That was a lot of why Nolan was almost non existent. He deferred to McDonald and let him run the show all game.

I agree on the entertainment value. It's a blast and the price is unbeatable.

BTW, the Cossetta's special was sausage, black olive and green olive. Not bad.

More size for the U coming:

http://www.startribune.com/blogs/59621977.html?elr=KArksUUUycaEacyU

Elliott Eliason made a verbal commitment to the Gophers Wednesday night, according to rivals.com.

The 6-11 center from Chadron, Neb., is Tubby Smith's first commitment in the 2010 class. He's a three-star prospect on rivals.com.
Eliason averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks per contest during his junior season at Chadron High School.

This is a good move for Minnesota. The 6-11 talent who won Nebraska's Gatorade Player of the Year honors will start his freshman year when centers Ralph Sampson III and Colton Iverson begin their junior seasons.

The Gophers have two scholarships left for 2010 players.

Eliason's high school hoped to attend the annual Gatorade Timberwolves Shootout, a showcase for high school teams. But it wasn't financially feasible, according to Eliason's coach, Craig Nobling.

Happy Tubby Tipoff...and our only hope for a decent winter team up in these parts.  Wild suck, Gopher hockey sucks and it's a given that the Wolves will suck.
