Izzo's team shoved them around. That center came down the floor and shoved a forearm into the MN post nearly every time. Got called a couple of times.

There was a lot of forearm-bars in that game. I don't like to watch games where that's allowed, then the officials try to reign it in, and give up.

Even with that, the MN shooting was so bad, they had zero chance.

I've had season tickets since McHale was playing. And I still have them despite not living in MN for 16 years.

I'm driving the bandwagon.

Plenty of room back on the bandwagon, Levine.

I saw Mason and Coffey turning the ball over constantly. There had to be 8 consecutive possessions where they dribbled the ball into trouble and got it stripped or it was called "blocked shot," but was actually a turnover. Ugly basketball.

Easily Coffey's worst game of the year, at least of the games I've seen. Some of the early ones weren't televised. I guess freshmen will play like freshmen sometimes after all.

Pitino in an interview said that he felt that this was the first time this year his team played "young." It happens. They were playing a really tough team, on the road.

Scares me to see how poor Mason/Coffey played---that hasn't happened all year.

Most teams lay an egg at some point in the year. MSU is a likely place to do it. People wrote them off when they lost a few games early, but just wait, by tourney time they will be a force.

The key now is to regroup and go back to playing like they were. Make this a one game aberration, not a six game skid.

Had a big disagreement about Izzo with someone last night. He said that Izzo always overachieves. I asked how does a great coach and great recruiting class yearly overachieve? They should be good every year. He said they overachieve every year......and I said not every year. Any way. They should be good every year.

Another terrible loss, at Penn State.

Offensive flow was non-existent as the game went on. Lots of ISO and bad shots.

But who's counting?

No flow to the offense any more. Need to get this figured out.

Let's not overreact. Never easy to win on the road in the B10.

Richard Pitino gets big Gophers commitment from Daniel Oturu of Cretin-Derham Hall
Cretin-Derham Hall star says he'll be a Gopher in 2018.

By Marcus Fuller Star Tribune JANUARY 19, 2017 — 3:08PM

With as big of a turnaround as the Gophers basketball team has made so far this season, four-star Cretin-Derham Hall big man Daniel Oturu couldn’t wait any longer to make it official that he wanted to stay home.

Oturu, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound junior, announced Thursday afternoon he will play for the Gophers. The commitment came in front of fellow students, friends and family at his high school gym.

A surprising 15-4 start for Minnesota coach Richard Pitino’s team paid dividends with him landing his most high-profile local recruit since signing former Hopkins star Amir Coffey last year.

“It’s a big deal,” said Rene Pulley, founder of Howard Pulley, Oturu’s AAU team. “He kind of knew he wanted to stay home. He wanted his family to see him play. He didn’t want to leave.”

Oturu is ranked No. 1 in the state’s junior class by ESPN.com. He’s ranked 76th overall in 2018 by Rivals.com, 66th by Scout.com and 78th by 247Sports.com.

Oturu picked Minnesota after receiving scholarship offers from schools such as Kansas, Texas, Baylor, Nebraska, Georgia Tech and Memphis.

Oturu landed an offer from the Jayhawks in November, but the Gophers had an advantage being that they’re the home state program.

Pitino signed Coffey and Michael Hurt from Rochester John Marshall signed in Minnesota’s 2016 class. The Gophers failed to land any local prospects in a loaded 2017 class, but Pitino could have up to five scholarships available for a 2018 group that is just as talented at the top.

Minnesota also offered Apple Valley’s Tre Jones, Armstrong’s Race Thompson and DeLaSalle’s Gabe Kalscheur. Jones, Armstrong and Oturu are the top three players in the state’s junior class and consensus top 100 prospects in the country.

“I think getting Daniel helps the Gophers a lot,” Pulley said. “The Gophers have gone after hometown kids, but they just weren’t fortunate enough to get them all — some of the best ones. Maybe now that will change.”

With Gophers starting center Reggie Lynch being a senior in 2017-18, Oturu would be a candidate to replace him in the middle. Oturu is long and athletic. He’s a shot-blocking and rebounding force with an improving offensive game.

Oturu said earlier in the week he will attend Saturday’s Gophers game against Wisconsin.

“Minnesota is off to a great start, hopefully they keep winning,” Oturu said. “It helps with our community.”

Daily Gopher:

Recruiting over the last 3 weeks has been a whirlwind of activity....and that’s just the football team. But Richard Pitino picked up a great in-state commitment today from Cretin-Derham Hall’s Daniel Oturo. A 4-star and consensus top 100 recruit is staying in Minnesota, picking the Gophers over Kansas

Height: 6’9”
Weight: 215
Wingspan: massive
High School: Cretin-Derham Hall
Other Offers: Kansas, Baylor, Georgia Tech, Creighton, Memphis and others

A raw, explosive and improving big man. Oturu has steadily been improving and moving up the recruiting rankings after a very strong sophomore season followed by a big summer on the AAU circuit. Ryan James of GopherIllustrated had this to say about Oturu this summer after he received some attention from the Gopher staff.

Oturu has the ability to dominate. Last year as a sophomore who had grown to 6-foot-8 (Daniel was 6-foot-4 two years ago at Stillwater and has grown to 6-foot-9 since the high school season completed) Oturu was raw but he physically attacked opponents with a passion and emotion that few bigs play with.

Daniel put up 16.8 points and 14.6 rebounds a contest shooting 64 percent from the floor on 11-12 shots a game. Oturu also blocked 5.8 shots a game with a couple steals and assists as well. All of this using his physical ability and playing with a high level of energy.

quote:

He is long, lean and plays with a ton of energy. This is a kid that Gopher fans are going to love. He’ll be explosive on the floor and will be one of the hardest guys in the Big Ten to box out. Expect his early career to be a lot of put backs, rebounds and blocked shots while his offensive game continues to evolve.

The Gopher staff currently has 5 scholarships to work with for this 2018 Class and landing Oturu is a big deal. The 2018 class of Minnesota kids is deep and very talented. Oturu is the second highest rated player in the class behind Apple Valley’s Tre Jones. How does this impact recruiting? It really doesn’t. We need help in the interior with this class and will need more than just Oturu. He’s the first to commit and if there is any impact I suspect it will be positive in that he’ll hopefully help persuade others local kids to join him.

This is a great early pickup for the Gopher staff. Landing a 4-star, top 100 kid is fantastic.

Can't emphasize enough what a huge pick up this is. In Coffey they finally landed that first big in state recruit only to be shut out of the following class. Oturu is the first of the top 2018 recruits to commit anywhere. Minnesota has a rapidly improving pipeline of basketball recruits with no in state competition for them. Given those circumstances far too many leave to play elsewhere. Maybe Little Ricky can be the coach that finally gets these kids to stay home.

Pitino also has scholarship offers to Tre Jones, Race Thompson and Gabe Kalscheur. If he lands even two of those, he has the makings of hell of a recruiting class.

Huge scoring slump the final 5+ minutes. Only points were the 3 by Springs to tie the game and send it to OT.
