love me some Butler
Took down #1 Indiana today.
niiiiiiiiiiiice!

Just one of the beautiful things about ncaa basketball.

The Padres are almost equal to the Yankees in terms of spending, compared to Butler vs. Duke.

Mike Zrzyzewski's salary is almost three times greater than the total Butler basketball budget.

As Duke settles in to the #1 spot, they get a commitment from the best high school basketball player in the country. That's gotta' be hard.

The media tells us how great Krzyzewski is. In terms of coaching, how good is he? How good would those Blue Devils boys be if Brad Stevens was coaching them? When's the last time coach K didn't start the basketball season with a huge advantage?

There are a lot of very good college basketball coaches in the country. I like that they can get the job done without a $18 Million dollar budget. Oh, and most of them do it with ZERO blue chippers.

Great post.
Brad Stevens is a great story and example.
Have so much respect for those types, who grind it out every day with kids who've been told they "aren't good enough"

Remember, less than two years ago, Virginia Commonwealth defeating Kansas in the NCAA Tournament?

Post game, Bill Self talked about how good the VCU players were. He emphasized, repeatedly, how good the players were.
He didn't talk about the "team" that beat him. He tried to make it sound like VCU had better players. No mention of how great of a job Shaka Smart did.

If you're the head coach of Kansas BB, I guess it's better to say that Shaka Smart out recruited you, rather than say he out coached you.
Of course somebody should ask what he did with all that recruiting budget.

There is a long list of guys that grind it out and teach basketball to kids that need to be taught. It's a beautiful thing to watch a coach take players nobody else wanted, and turn them into a great team, and all the other stuff that comes with that.

I don't hate Mike Krzyzewski, but I hate the media praise. I hate that he gets universal credit for things that others actually do better than him.

I can't imagine how hard it must be to coach Kyrie Irving or Jabari Parker.

Yep.
Like the Kentucky factory also ...
Yes, its an art, the whole "getting mega-talents to gel together" .... but still, winning with all that talent, isn't remarkable.

Btw ... what a great story Nate Wolters is.
I know some others touched on it earlier, but wow.
SDSU, yes .... SOUTH DAKOTA State University went into the Pit today and beat New Mexico.
Wolters has worked his way into, perhaps .... a first round NBA draft choice next year. Thats miraculous.

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - South Dakota State not only beat a ranked team for the first time at the Division I level on Saturday, the Jackrabbits also ended No. 16 New Mexico's perfect 12-0 start to the season with a 70-65 win in front of 15,278 fans inside The Pit in Albuquerque, N.M. on Saturday.
"I don't know if anybody in the country has taken a tougher road trip than this trip this year, and I'm really proud of our guys to come out of it 2-1," head coach Scott Nagy said. "We played three NCAA teams, and we knew that the 1,200 mile bus trip would have no effect on how we played, we're used to bus trips and we weren't going to use it as an excuse."
Fresh off a loss to Belmont on Wednesday, the Jackrabbits, who improve to 10-4 on the season, rode a bus the 1,200 miles to Albuquerque from Nashville, after weather problems cancelled their flights on Thursday.
Nate Wolters led the Jackrabbits in the win, their first against a ranked Division I opponent, with a game-high 28 points, adding five rebounds and seven assists.
"He's still not healthy, that's the thing," Nagy said of Wolters. "But today he had more juice today than I've seen him have in the last five games. He was active emotionally, and that's what we need from him."
Chad White added 13 points, including four clutch free throws late in the game. Jordan Dykstra and Brayden Carlson both finished with 10 points, with Dykstra adding a game-high 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
The Lobos scored the first three points of the game, but the Jackrabbits scored the next eight points, part of a 12-2 run that gave SDSU a 12-5 lead with five and a half minutes off the first half clock.
SDSU took the lead on a White 3-pointer just two minutes and six seconds into the game, a lead that the Jackrabbits would never relinquish.
The Jacks built that lead to as many as 12 points at 35-23 with 4:50 left in the half, before New Mexico used a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 35-32 with a minute and a half left in the opening stanza, but SDSU still took a 38-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.
A Dykstra 3-pointer early in the second half pushed the SDSU lead back to nine points at 45-36, before the Lobos made a push to get back within one possession at 51-48 with 8:57 on the clock.
Dykstra answered with a trey on the other end to push the lead back to six, and the Lobos never got closer than four points for the rest of the game.
Kendall Williams led the Lobos, who fall to 12-1 on the season, with 21 points. Tony Snell added 13 points.
The Jackrabbits get a short holiday break before returning to Summit League play on Saturday at North Dakota State at 7 p.m.
NOTES: SDSU improves to 1-0 all-time against New Mexico, 1-7 in games against ranked opponents at the Division I level and to 1-1 all-time at The Pit, with the lone loss coming against Baylor in the 2012 NCAA Tournament ... the Jacks also improve to 7-0 on the season when they outrebound their opponents and to 8-0 when they score at least 70 points ... Wolters scored at least 20 points for the sixth time this season and for the 47th time in his career ... with 1,868 points in his career, which leaves him 68 points shy of breaking the all-time record of 1,931 (Mark Tetzlaff 1981-85) ... Dykstra posted his third double-double of the season and fifth of his career

If only we had element of toughness and tenacity that Ralph Sampson III used to provide.
