To quote Vince Lombardi ....

WHAT THE HELL IS GOIN ON OUT THERE?

Gopher Womens VB upsets #3 Illini in 3 sets today.
Did something happen at the U this week?

I will attribute it to the Hockey Teams resurgence ... until proven otherwise!

Awesome game. Just awesome.

Plays that made them look like a DI team.

Lots of good trash texts with my buddies from Iowa.

2-0 v. Iowa since Brew was fired.

Good stuff from Scoggins

That starts with quarterback MarQueis Gray, who finally displayed the dual threat ability expected of him since the start of the season. Gray has been wildly inconsistent throwing the ball, and his future at that position seemed uncertain, or at least open to speculation.
Gray still needs to do it over a long stretch, but he provided a glimpse of his capabilities during the fourth-quarter rally. He completed four of five passes for 53 yards. He also carried the ball five times for 41 yards, including the go-ahead 3-yard touchdown with 2:48 left.
More than his numbers, Gray looked in control and decisive, particularly throwing the ball. He looked like a leader out there.
"Coach Kill said I need to stop trying to be everybody's friend and be a leader of this team," Gray said.

In an obviously lost season, days like yesterday have to be savored. Rivalry trophy games like that are as close as a losing team gets to a bowl game, and it's what makes college football great. Wish i could have been there. Seemed like a great party atmosphere with the players excited and jumping up and down,The fans having fun, with the halloween costumes and all, perfect weather. Great scene.

We all know one game doesn't automatically fix everything. The problems that have been there all season remain there today. But it's good for the program to receive a shot of adrenalin and have some fun once in awhile.

The game itself:

Gray had probably his best strictly 'QB' game. Nice awareness, nice touch on his passes. He seemed to exude a calm, can do attitude.

Nice game for Bennett. I have always liked him. An underrated RB.

That was the best executed onside kick I have ever seen. Iowa never even had a chance to get the ball.If you didn't see it, do yourself a favor and watch the game recap on Big Ten Network website.

My son said

"why are they so excited(fans and players)? They've been not very good."

Hard to explain that one. Hope. Wanting to beat the big rival. Getting rid of a ton of frustration.

And yes, the onside was sweet. Awesome clear out of the up-men by the goph's front line. IA not even minutely prepped for that one.

I was one that had Ferentz up on a pedestal for awhile.
Not so sure anymore.
They looked like shell-shocked deer-in-headlighst while the 4th quarter raged on.
Us being the better-prepared team was shocking.

I agree completely on the red shirt. I think one big mistake Kill made this year was burning a year of eligibility for Shortell. Nelson looks like he should be better than Max. Let the kid sit next year and absob the playbook and college life. Then in 2 years let him compete with Shortell for the starting job behind what should be a real good veteran offensive line.

I was ok with Shortell, but some others seem very odd.  I don't have a problem with a true freshman who is on the 2 deep by the 3rd game or so.  Shortell was pretty much #2 all along.  Marcus Jones also.  Too bad he's done for the year.  Tommy Olson probably should have been a starter earlier.  He & Eddie were opening up some nice holes on the left side in the Iowa game.  Michael Amaefula played a lot early...and new Soph Malcolm Moulton too.

But pulling late redshirts on David Cobb & Cedric Thompson were questionable IMO.  I would have saved Devin Crawford-Tufts  & Drew Goodger also.  They could have been huge players as 5th year guys.  Kinda funny how Kill was adamant about not using Thieren Cockran.  It should be fun to watch him next year.  Hopefully Stoudemire can come back too......

Opinion of some were that Nelson had a fair shot to start next year.  Of course that was before Gray's game with Iowa.  I just don't think you want to end up with Nelson & Shortell having the same eligability.

I think they just burned a year of Shortell eligibility on a lost year. They were obviously going to stick with Gray through thick and thin. They had other back ups with Big Ten experience in Alipate and Parrish. Red shirt Shortell this year, have him back up next year and then he has 3 years of eligibilty remaining to try to be the starter.

I heard that he's got competition coming in with the next recruiting class- a certain qb, I believe, from Mankato.

Surprise me today, boys .... I'm expecting a huge let-down, and that MSU will be looking to lay out some licks.
These are the character-builders. Going into hostile territory to take on a hurt opponent.
You have your hands full today, Mr Kill.

Btw ... Phil Nelson was 10-14 for 200 yds and 4 TDs as his Mkto West squad trounced Hutch last night in their section finals.
That was a pretty good Hutch team, and they dismantled them. 55-13.

Gophers out to a shocking 7-0 lead. Gray is awesome...way to create. Terrible tackling by MSU helped.
