Status: offline 		Same problem that Eric Decker had. Don't forget that Decker was a one star recruit. The bottom line is can he run good routes and catch the ball? How does he adjust to the ball in the air? Does he go get or does he fade away from the defender and hope it falls to him? I'll sacrifice some speed if we finally have someone who can go get the damn ball.

Yeah...and not a great offer list. Arizona looks like the only other AQ school to offer him. But I have heard several Eric Decker comparisons. Maybe it's wishful thinking but if he turns out anything close to Decker, it's a good get.

Really bummed about the Nate Andrews decommit. He was the one I was really hoping we'd land. Still a week to go and anything can happen. Also good to see that this projected small 2013 class is growing. Should help even out the future classes.


Karl if you remember, everyone thought that Mickael Carter was presumed to be coming here and then at the HS Army game he chose Clemson only to change again a month later to attend Mn. Anything can happen

Status: offline 		If you are looking for reason, the Gophers were hurt by only having 18 scholarships. Plus it is supposed to be the worst year for in state recruits in a long, long time.

It's really meaningless though. All they do is add the stars behind the players names and divide by the number of players. Tim Brewster had a top 20 in the nation recruiting class for all the good is did. Wisconsin, starting with Alvarez right through now consistently gets rated in the bottom half of Bid Ten recruiting, but outside of Ohio State have been the top team in the BT. Let's see what these kids do in a couple of years and how well Kill develops them.

Dakota schools lure Minnesota prep football stars

After a junior year interrupted by injuries, Maple Grove wide receiver Jake Wieneke emerged on many Friday nights last fall as the best football player on the field. By season's end, the 6-4 senior had caught a metro-leading 68 passes for 1,330 yards and scored 13 touchdowns.

Accolades poured in and postseason honors piled up, including a spot on the Star Tribune All-Metro first team, a testament to Wieneke's soft hands, remarkable body control and ability to catch passes in traffic.

Wieneke, who said he "always wanted to be a Gopher," waited to hear from the University of Minnesota. The call never came.

But out west, eyes watched keenly from Brookings, S.D.

Soon South Dakota State came calling, amid silence from Minneapolis. The Jackrabbits turned Wieneke's head with a scholarship offer and a chance to stand out in a welcoming Division I program.

While the Gophers search nationally to populate their roster and offer scholarships to relatively few in-state players, the four major universities across Minnesota's western border -- North Dakota, North Dakota State, South Dakota and South Dakota State -- are luring top players from what they have long considered a fertile college football breeding ground.

Aiming for the Gophers

Since 2007, the Dakota schools are 3-1 against Minnesota. North Dakota State defeated the Gophers in 2007 and again in 2011. South Dakota won in 2010. South Dakota State fell a field goal short, losing 16-13 in 2009.

Those results are not lost on their Minnesota recruits.

"We play them in 2015," Wieneke said. "If I can't go there to play, at least I can go there to try to beat them."

 Used to be Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin the Gophers had to contend with in terms of in state recruiting.

With the success of NDSU and SDSU in the FCS, now the Gophers have even more competition for landing instate talent.

Some of these going to the Dakota schools might have walked on at U of M.......now, no more.

Status: offline 		Sounds like a decent Kill-type of class. We are not gonna get the 5 star recruits (yet), but I trust the staff. It appears we are in the ballpark with most of the other B1G teams. Here are my top 5 recruits from this group:

Berkley Edwards - A very good compliment to current backs D. Kirkwood and R. Williams. I think he plays right away. May be a difference maker...something we don't currently have.

Owen Salzwedel - Sounds like a very good prospect at DE.

Damien Wilson - Already a full sized MLB who should be penciled in right now as a starter. Per Kill, he was the national JUCO college defensive player of the year last season.

Chris Streveler - Don't give Nelson the starting QB job just yet. Streveler is already in school and could provide very stiff competition.

De'Vondre Campbell - JuCo OLB with 3 years of eligibility remaining. A good chance he starts next year.

The Gophers losses to the Dakotas were under basement Brew and Kill in his first year after inheriting the withered fruit of Brewster's labors. The main reason the Gophers signed only one in state recruit this year is that this is the worst crop of in state recruits in about 20 years.

FWIW, this is a pretty high percentage year for the Gophers in getting recruits that other good D1 schools offered scholarships.

I might find a way to wedge Donovahn, Jones QB from Hampton, GA who decommitted from Missouri at the last minute and signed with the Gophers into that group.
I've read a couple of recruiting gurus who said after of Ohio State and Michigan there is almost no difference between 3 and 12 in the recruiting rankings. Like I said before, they just count up the number of stars and divide by the players to get an average and that's pretty much how they rate recruiting classes.

No Minnesota coach is going to compete with the elite programs for 5 star recruits. What we are betting on is that Kill will be successful at the Barry Alvarez method of recruiting. F*** the number of stars behind a kid's name. Recruit good athletes who fit your system and develop them to the best of their abilities.

This is completely accurate. Anybody that the Gophers really want - in that they offer a scholarship - they aren't losing to the Dakotas. There might be one or two exceptions over the past ten years. The bulk of those that they want that they lose out on go to another BCS school.

I think there is also a bias at play in that if the Gophers beat a Dakota school at home, nobody bats an eye. They should win it. Ho hum. But on the occasion that an upset is pulled off, people seem to remember it for a long time. I think they are something like 8-2 in the last 10 games they've played against Dakota schools...and that's unprecedentedly bad even for this sad program. :\

Status: offline 		The Big Ten on Sunday approved new East and West divisions for the 2014 season as well as a nine-game conference schedule beginning in 2016.
The league's presidents and chancellors voted unanimously to approve the recommendations from the athletic directors Sunday morning during a conference call.


The division realignment coincides with the arrival of new conference members Maryland and Rutgers.Gone are Legends and Leaders, the controversial division names the Big Ten adopted in 2011, as the league went with a clear geographical model and geographic names for its new alignment.
The Big Ten East will include: Indiana, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Penn State and Rutgers. The Big Ten West will include: Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin.
Every East division team is located in the Eastern time zone, while every West division team except Purdue is located in the Central time zone.
Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany told ESPN.com that geography was the first priority in aligning divisions, followed by preserving rivalries and then competitive balance. The Big Ten used competitive balance as its top priority in aligning the Legends and Leaders divisions in 2011.

Jerry Kill's attempt at bringing legitimacy back to the Minnesota Gophers football program is set take a surprising leap.

The Gophers and TCU have settled on an agreement to face each other in 2014 and 2015 as part of a home and home series. The series will begin on Sept. 13, 2014 in Fort Worth, Texas and conclude with the Gophers hosting TCU to open the 2015 schedule.

Kill and Gophers athletic director Norwood Teague took heavy criticism last year when they paid North Carolina $800,000 to opt out of a home-home series in 2013 and 2014.

However, by facing the Big 12's TCU the Gophers have a replacement to fill the hole in their 2014 schedule with an arguably higher profile program. The 2015 match-up will replace the game the Gophers had originally set with South Dakota State.

Kill and TCU coach Gary Patterson have close relationship, which traces back to the late 1980s when both were assistant coaches at Pittsburg State (Kan.). Patterson's hometown of Rozel, Kan., is located about two hours from where Kill grew up in Cheney, Kan.

TCU's first year in the Big 12 wasn't a memorable one. The Horned Frogs stumbled to a 7-6 record, including a loss to Michigan State in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl. The struggle-filled season ended TCU's run of four straight seasons without more than two losses.

The Gophers' only previous meeting with TCU came in 1974, when Minnesota won 9-7 at Memorial Stadium.

Status: offline 		Connor Mayes, one of the top center recruits in the nation has committed to the Gophers. He chose the U over Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Texas Christian, Kansas State and Baylor.

They also got TE Gaelin Elmore, from Somerset. He picked Kill over Wisconsin, Nebraska and Michigan State.

Kill is actually landing some recruits that some pretty good programs are pursuing.
