KillBill ball

A lot has been made of Jerry Kill's modesty and lack of pretension, especially in contrast to his predecessor, but I thought the Gophers' new coach was taking it a little over-the-top recently when he said something that made me do a double-take.
"There's nothing special about me," Kill said. "There are high school coaches who could do my job just as well, I really believe that."
Hmm, Gopher fans might not want to hear that their new million-dollar leader is on the same level as Smalltown Prep's football coach. But as Kill explained what he meant, I realized he wasn't demeaning his own ability -- quite the opposite. He was outlining his philosophy about moving up from the small-school Mid-American Conference to the NCAA equivalent of the big leagues.
He meant that he feels no reason to be intimidated by the Big Ten.
"People ask that about me all the time -- can I adjust to the Big Ten?" Kill said. "I'm more worried about continuity, and about sticking with what works. People need to understand, it doesn't matter what level you're at; the principles are the same. It's still football."
That's an attitude borne of experience, which after two decades as a head coach, is one of Kill's strengths.
"When I took the job at Southern Illinois, I got a lot of advice: 'You better get some Division I-AA people on your staff.' When I took the job at Northern (Illinois), it was 'You better get some MAC people,' " Kill said.
In both cases, he kept his coaching staff almost intact, just as he's done at Minnesota. "I've done it the way I feel best. People say 'It's totally different at this level,' and yeah, there are a lot of differences. I know there's a lot to learn," he said. "But there are many basic ideas that work at every level. Preparation. Hard work. If we have a system, that's it, and we're going to stick with that."

The big 10 proved Saturday how overrated it is. No reason for him to be intimidated.

Would RichRod being available have changed our search?
Sounds like That Brady Hoke character may be Michigans choice?
Were we too skeptical of the guy?
The coaching landscape looks a lot different right now than it did when we were searching, is all I'm saying ....

The coaching landscape is always changing, but you have to make a hire fairly quickly because keeping the program in limbo is not good for recruiting or retaining players or signed recruits. I can't see us hiring Rodriguez, and by all accounts we went after Hoke but he used it to leverage a raise at SDSU and wait for a better offer. Michigan could be the better offer, but he would be going into the wolves pit.

The fundamental problem is that programs like Michigan or Notre Dame have unrealistic expectations of success. TCU just won the Rose Bowl and went undefeated and Boise State is a legitimate top 10 program right now. Ohio State is the best example of sustained success in the Big Ten, but such examples are few and fleeting. It's nice to think your team has a chance every year, but the most you can reasonably expect is to be competing for a conference title most years, while many of the boosters for this storied programs expect to be in the national championship picture every year. Is that worth the extra money? I'm not sure.

I'd take the Michigan job and not think twice.

Is it tougher? Ya, in some ways. But it's still the winningest program in the history of the sport and still has a cache/recruiting advantages.

Michigan's one of the top 5 jobs (or so) in the country in college football.

And honestly, if I were Harbaugh, I'd go there over the NFL. A college job is so much easier than an NFL job, IMO, with a lot more security if you succeed.

Hasn't Harbaugh burned almost every bridge with Michigan over the last couple of years? I may have misunderstood the magnitude, but I thought he made some comments that really pissed off the administration and the alumni.

Spent time w/ a coach who was at the AFCA gathering in Dallas Mon. & Tues. w/ Kill. Was told Kill was a hit, especially w/ Texas HS coaches. The more and more I talk to people, it's becoming apparent that Maturi stumbled into a great hire.

Stumbled into it? Hell, he fell ass backwards into it. That is assuming Kill turns out to be a great hire.

I've always been kind of partial to Michigan football since the Desmond Howard days. And I haven't heard that. I think they just realized he was NFL bound no matter what.

Really? Was Kill the great white knight that everyone wanted and Maturi just got lucky to catch him on a day when he felt like saying "yes"? Because if not, then it sounds like Maturi found a diamond in the rough that wasn't on much of anyone's radar.

I think the general assumption was that we were doing an "if A, then B" process.

If Kill turns out to be a good hire, then we can either say Maturi stumbled into it or made a sharp hire.

I kind of think you're actually agreeing with Wolfson and Tim...

Kill was not a guy that everyone wanted. He wasn't on anyone's radar. That's the point. That Maturi MAY have accidentally hired a hell of a coach. I've never seen anything from Maturi that would lead me to believe he was smarter than everyone else, so this looks like it COULD be a case of better being lucky than good.

People were excited about Brewster. I'm not going to say that Kill is a great hire or a mediocre one (somewhere in between, I would guess) but I recall the enthusiasm that was in the air when Brewster had his first press conference. The guy spins a good ball of yarn, that is not up for debate. The first season was a disappointment but I remember when the team was 6-0 (7-0?) and everyone was talking about what we needed to do to make sure he did not leave for greener pastures. I'm confident this team will win more than 1 game next year (I am thinking 4 to 6), but it will be 2014 (at least) before I feel like I can truly judge the hire. Maturi had to work with what he had and it appears that Hoke, Patterson, Peterson, Edsall, and others all turned down his advances (like me at a sorority) so I can't really fault him short of making another Brewster-type hire (which he definitely did not do). The fact is, Kill has proven that he can coach and has recruited as well as can be expected at the lower level, time will tell what he can do here.

And it was pretty obvious that Kill was WAAAAAAYYYYY down Maturi's list of candidates. All the claims he made about "I can't believe the kind of people that are interested in us", etc.

No matter how he's spinning it now, Maturi clearly "settled" for Kill.

I'd say he lucked into it more than had a "shrewd" move. If it ends up that way.

Yeap. My comment was that IF Kill proves to be a great hire it's because Maturi fell ass backwards into it. Maturi's comments leading up to the hire and when he announced the hire made it pretty obvious to most that he got turned down flat by more prominent names before targeting someone who wasn't going to turn down a jump from 1A to a Big Ten job. At one point Maturi was promising something on the level of a Tubby Smith hire.

PARK RIDGE, Ill. (AP)—Legends and Leaders, the names for the Big Ten’s two new divisions, are sticking around. At least through next football season.

With the addition of Nebraska as its 12th team, the Big Ten announced in December it would field two six-team divisions in football with the winners meeting in a league title game.

The names sparked an uproar from critics, who questioned the suitability and asked the league to reconsider.

Big Ten chief communications officer Diane Dietz said Friday that the league will do market research during the 2011 season to see how the names play out.

“We’ve always said we’ve heard the feedback. We’re listening. We want to test them and the only way to test them is to let them do what they were intended to do,” Dietz said.

Commissioner Jim Delany said in an earlier radio interview that the names Legends and Leaders were picked to highlight the conference’s rich history and acknowledged he was surprised by the negative feedback

He said the league needed a period to breathe a little and not rush to judge whether the division names were sustainable.

Nebraska will be joined in the Legends Division by Northwestern, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota and Iowa. The Leaders Division will include Illinois, Indiana, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue and Wisconsin.

In other words, the conference will continue to spend a ton of money to learn that fans don't like the division names and will continue to dislike the division names once in place.  But the market reserach will tell them that.

Marketing........how to sell widgets....how to sell things that people don't want nor don't need.  What a noble profession.

Did anyone else read Sid's column the other day about how Decker had a good first year in Denver?

6 rec, 106 yards and 1 TD

How is that guy (Sid) still employed?

Ya, though he was behind a few guys in Denver.

I'd love to have Decker on the Vikes. I still think he can have a long, productive career as a "solid" WR.

The fact that anyone who wound up playing under Brewster could make it in the pros is a good year, I guess.
