Randy Cross's attempt at using the telestrator goes horribly, horribly wrong during the Patriots/Bengals game. Apparently he was trying to point out "Patriots Place" on-screen. Although I am sure both CBS and the Kraft family are happy they mentioned it, they could have done without the outline...

Cowboys Accuse Titans Punters of Trying to Hit Video Screen
    Sat Aug 22, 2009

The Nashville Tennessean reports during warm-ups for last night's Titans-Cowboys preseason game, Titans P A.J. Trapasso kicked at least three footballs off the bottom of the giant video screen that hangs over the field, and then he hit it again with a punt in the third quarter. Veteran P Craig Hentrich estimated he hit it "a dozen" times during warm-ups. It appears that the big board in new Cowboys Stadium is not high enough. "It is an issue. It will be an issue," said HC Jeff Fisher, co-chairman of the NFL's Competition Committee. "Both of our punters hit the scoreboard so something needs to be worked out." Officials ruled it a dead ball when Trapasso's punt hit the board, and he had to punt it again. The Cowboys accused the punters of trying to hit the video board intentionally. Owner Jerry Jones spoke with Hentrich on the field before the game. Trapasso laughed when asked if he took pride in being the first player to hit the video board. "We weren't trying to hit it," he said.

Sounds like good old Jerry doesn't want to admit they effed up the design in his billion dollar home.

Jerry's got the skin on his face tied back so tight he can't see anything above eye level.
They could have hung it 10 feet off the ground and he still would have signed off on it.

TAMPA, Fla. -- Tampa Bay linebacker Angelo Crowell tore his biceps in Saturday's preseason game against Jacksonville and most likely will be lost for the season, Buccaneers coach Raheem Morris said Sunday afternoon.

Crowell was one of the first free-agent signings after Morris and general manager Mark Dominik took over and initially was viewed as the likely starter on the strong side.
Crowell, slowed by other injuries in offseason workouts and preseason, fallen behind Quincy Black and Adam Hayward on the depth chart. Black now appeared to be ticketed for the starting job with Hayward and Geno Hayes as the top two backups at the outside linebacker positions.

NAPA — Rookie wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey shook off an early drop and turned in, perhaps, the best practice of his young NFL career Wednesday.

Heyward-Bey punctuated a strong showing during the 2 1/2-hour practice by lunging for a Charlie Frye pass thrown well behind him and snaring it before it sailed out of bounds.

Raiders coach Tom Cable said plays like that will help restore Heyward-Bey's confidence after a shaky start in camp and spur him to new heights.

"Right after he caught it, I said to him, 'Your mistake is you showed me you can do that and so now the expectation goes up,' Cable said. "But he had a great day catching the ball. That catch right there would be difficult for anybody. So, just telling him, 'Hey, that's who you are. That's what you're capable of.' Catches like that, they build a lot of confidence."

Heyward-Bey, the first-round draft pick out of Maryland, called it a "normal" catch, one that "needed to be made."

He added that he took heed of Cable's impromptu sidebar on the field.

"He just told me, 'If you can make that catch, you can make any catch," Heyward-Bey said

What's wrong with this picture? If the pass was well behind him AND sailing out of bounds, where the hell was he lunging from?

It would NOT surprise me if Heyward-Bey ended up being offensive ROY (and I'm not talking about his play being offensive).

But that would be only if he were motivated by the fact that everybody laughed at the Raiders for picking him, and he used his speed to get underneath a bunch of deep balls from the strong arm of Russell.

What do you guys think of a RB named Coffee (sp?) that plays for the 49ers ?  He created a stir in my fantasy draft being picked fairly early on.  Could this be offensive ROY if Gore can't stay healthy, or do you like Donald Brown (Indy) should Addai not stay healthy.  What about Maclin, Harvin, Wells, Moreno (he's on my ff team) or Sanchez ?

I'd say Harvin is going to win it.

Now, allow me a moment to remove my purple shades.

Looking at things objectively...Peter King predicted Harvin to win it...which pretty much makes it official that he wont.

It is no different than Favre getting similar treatment.

Most people view football as entertainment and they just want to win.

The few diehard fans (or in this case, animal rights activists) pale in comparsion.

Vick played very well given the limited time he was on.  He only threw one ball downfield and it was a perfect pass between 2 defenders.

Jax was waiting for him on running plays.

Maclin looks like a disappoinment though.  He is tentative and lacks any explosion.  They thought they were getting a DeSean Jackson/Percy Harvin type player but what they really got is Reggie Brown II.

Maclin, although it is VERY EARLY, looks average.

And many here were disappointed when we didn't trade up to get Maclin.

I'm shocked about the reaction to Vick because almost every other team wouldn't even consider him because of PR repercussions. Turns out there are no PR repercussions....the Beagle fans love him!

I am a jersey number guy. I need a couple of questions answered. Roy Williams is listed as #11 but has been wearing #4.

Now explain to me how he wear this when Moss was wearing #6, when he first arrived in NE, he was denied in request to keep. Reggie Bush wanted #5, denied.

One more for you; 23 is worn by wide receiver Devin Hester, yet Cal Johnson was never allowed to wear his college#21.

Harvin was not allowed to wear #1.

Just what to know if anyone knows. I really think that Hester should be forced to change numbers.

Here's a link for the rules.

http://www.jt-sw.com/football/pro/index.nsf/Documents/0-jers-nums

Hester didn't come into the league as a WR.  And technically is probably listed as a RB.  He came in as a Kick Returner.  However since he is officially a WR I think you are right about his new position.  If a player changes his position during his playing career in the NFL and such change moves him out of a category specified above, he must be issued an appropriate new jersey number.

In summary:

Position(s)

Primary

Alternate

QB, P, K

1-19

RB, DB

20-49

C

50-59

60-79

G, T

60-79

WR

80-89

10-19

TE

80-89

DL (NT/DT/DE)

60-79

90-99

LB

50-59

90-99

Hester started out as a CB, so his 23 was appropriate. The move to WR was to get him to touch the ball on offense and because he blew as a DB.

Remember our Robert Tate. He was 82 as a wide out. Switched to DB and his number went to #28.

Hester is listed as a WR now, isn't he?

I thought Tight ends could be in the 40's and 80's? The whole HBack thing. Jimmy K was #85, then switched to 40 when Denny listed him as a Fullback.

By the way Scott, thanks for doing my homework!

Not sure but I think the number assignments aren't enforced until the regular season. With 80 some players in camp per team expains it.

Some General observations

Watching Henne and Freeman try to complete a pass was hard to watch (ouch)

Reid playing musical qb's won't work. I predict the Vick experiment will blow up in the iggles face. Hopefully we get McNabb out of it.

All the experts are overlooking GB in this div. Their new defensive scheme looks solid and Rodgers looks like he's going to be a very good qb ( I hope i'm wrong about this)

Brady to Moss looks like another 20 + td catch season for #84

You are right on the enforcement of it, bill. I am just curious. First, Why would Williams not wear his NFL #11 in Preseason? He has worn that number since he was drafted in Detroit and last year when traded to Dallas?

The Hester thing, is valid. Unless like Scott says he is considered a RB.

Tight Ends I am sure are 80s and 40s. Chris Cooley is a tight end right? Jimmy K is listed as a tight end.
