If you guys really want to shed that last 10 lbs get a good whey protein mix at your local nutrition store and have a whey shake for breakfast. It'll help cut down on your meals for the rest of your day and it's a solid, easily digestible protein. Tastes good too. The best way to burn fat is to build muscle.
My diet is pretty darn good at this point - I don't want to mess with that part of my success - and I am pretty damn muscular thanks to a consistent strength building program, so I'm not worried about supplementing my diet to build more muscle. My main problem is getting the aerobic exercise in. I've been battling a cold and then a bad achilles tendon for a month now, and given that the weather here is pretty hard on both of those, I haven't been running in a while. Once I get that back into gear, I think I'll be on target. My main goal isn't really the weight loss anyway. It's the health. To that end, my whole program has been about gradual, consistent, sustainable changes to my lifestyle.

I can fit 12 for dinner (16 if we pull out the kids table). With John C. cooking - I think we're set!

Olive oil is great but oh so spendy.
Which raises an entirely different matter: It is freaking expensive to eat healthy! Fresh local produce is way more expensive than frozen or canned stuff. Whole grain breads and pastas are way more expensive than bleached flour products. And junk food in general (Twinkies, McDonalds, chips, etc.) is WAAAAAY cheaper than healthy snacks and meals. I started eating healthy this year, and it has definitely hurt the wallet. But I'm 40 lbs lighter, less worried about my mortality, and I feel great, so I think it's a fair trade. Now if I could just get that last 10 lbs off ...
***************************************************** Really 40lbs in one year? That's impressive. Good work.
Back to chicken, I like to bake mine but I always leave the skin on. JC is right, that's the flavor!!! :) But I've come to terms with my fatness so it doesn't bother me.
I make my fried chicken on my Holland Grill. I like Ben incorporate the EVOO-Extra Virgin Olive Oil. My recipe comes out crispy and not greasy. I also make some killer BBQ Chix on that grill. The kids love the Thighs,Legs and wings. I use a texas style rub recipe, a louisiana style basting sauce and a Florida,KCbased louisiana style homemade BBQ sauce. I add a light coat of bbq sauce the last 5to 10 minutes and serve the remaining sauce warm for dipping. This way no burnage. I also have been know to use creole spices in substitution of the basting sauce and add BBQ the last 15, but still serve extra sauce warm at the table for dipping. I can on here to talk about the Blank/McKay press conference, I think Blank is more betrayed by Petrino than Vick. He didn't specifically explain it, but I think the difference is that although Vick made poor decisions, he never intentionally do anything to hurt the Falcons. Petrino knows he is setting the Falcons back and he is abandoning ship and he is doing it for selfish reasons giving no thought or respect to the Falcon's owner, gm and coaching staff. Blank made a point about all the things Petrino asked for and received, deserved at least 3 years of sticking it out. I like Blank and McKay. I think Petrino is a bigger piece of scum than the ex-Miami coach, Nick Nameescapesme. I also think that Les Miles will be a complete scumbag if he goes to Michigan is the next 5 years.

Saban. I agree. Petrino shows no character and no integrity with the way he did this.

Thanks Lynn! Back to chicken - I leave the skin on as well. Weight - Good job Ben! I lost 30lbs from fall 2004 to fall 2006. I have spent the last 18 months trying to stay within 5 lbs of the fall 2006 weight. I actually lost 15 the first 6 months, put 10 back on the next 6 months and then the big breakthrough Fall 2005 to 2006 25lbs dropped and stayed off. My main secrets were minimizing fast food to once twice a month. Stop drinking Soda. even diet pop with 0 calories is a water retainer and appetite enhancer. I recommend the Lipton Green teas.as a pop substitute or Snapple or fruit juices. 100% cranberryw/ ras or grape or apple is good and good for all your functions, if you know what I mean. I also mixed more raw veggies and fruit. Salad, romaine or spinach, ice berg has zero value. I still use ranch dressing for salad and veggie dip. So I don't sacrifice too much. Portion control was also what really worked for me, I went to six small meals off the portions I used to like and now my small meals have dropped from 6 to 3 or 4. I also have the deck of cards sized steak versus the Fred Flinstone steaks I used to eat.

I too cut out pop altogether, and I limit fast food to when I'm traveling (on average about once a month, maybe two). I get much more vegetables in my diet, and instead of egg and cheese biscuits for breakfast, I have grapefruit. I also don't sacrifice too much. Instead, I focus on quality. For example, I don't get cheap crappy desserts daily, instead I have one or two good ones per week. Instead of fast food burgers once a week, I have a restaurant burger (preferably at the Saint Clair Broiler) once a month, maybe two. I do allow myself a daily Frappuchino (more like Crackachino). But the biggest key for me, the biggest secret, has been to work on one habit at a time. I won't change anything else until I get the current one to stick. This keeps me from feeling like I'm doing things I can't stick with.
Jeff, do I have to excersise too?
Yeah it sucks but that's the main part. Just to carry on the conversation here. If you are trying to gain muscle mass be careful with loads of cardio. You won't be able to process enough nutrients to feed you muscles if you're constantly burning calories via cardio. Myself, I'm not a muscle guy. I'm like the dude. I exercise daily but it's to stay fit and not be Arnold.

Quality over quantity is the key. Keep up the good work! You are right when you get a good habit to be second nature then it is a lot easier to take on the next opporturnity.

Speaking of exercise, After 15 months I am able to do pushups finally, though i have to do them on my knuckles(my wrists don't bend any more, far enough to get my palms flat) and I'm up to a whopping 7....

It won't be long before you're cranking them out like a Marine. I do the fist one sometimes as well. For some reason, I occasionally have issues with connective tissue in my palms, and standard pushups can exacerbate that.

Diet will only get so far, but at some point if you want to have...say under 10% body fat....you have to hit the cardio pretty hard. Your body, by nature, will keep that last bit of fat for emergencies. You'll actually burn muscle before your body gives that up. That's why normal people find it so maddening to try and have the "perfect athletic body". It's damn near impossible for the average Joe.

BTW- if you're serious the easiest way is to cut out as much salt, sugar and flour as possible. Those are the 3 mortal enemies of body fat.

I'm lucky as we have a gym here at work, so every day during my lunch break I go work out. What really got me going all out on the exercise was the Navy Seals program they had. They put up the benchmarks for what the Seals do (or at least their minimums) and put together an 8 week "boot camp" competition to see how you compared to them. Best % increase from your first test to the testing at the end of the 8 weeks won $50. It really makes a difference when you log in what you do and there is some sort of accountability to a third party.
