Bengals | Former teammate says C. Johnson punched Lewis
Fri, 7 Mar 2008 12:09:26 -0800
Mark Curnutte, of The Cincinnati Enquirer, reports Cleveland Browns DL Shaun Smith, a former Cincinnati Bengal, said that Bengals WR Chad Johnson had an altercation with head coach Marvin Lewis and wide receivers coach Hue Jackson, who is now with the Baltimore Ravens. There was reportedly a video on YouTube of Smith making comments about the fight but the video was removed. "He swung on Marvin. (Johnson) shattered the training room glass. He swung on Marvin (and) hit Marvin in the eye. Then he tried to swing on wide receivers coach Hue Jackson, who's now in Baltimore."

Raiders:  Report has QB Russell at 300 lbs

The News
SI.com reported Friday that Raiders' quarterback JaMarcus Russell is still an unknown. There is no real proof he is ready to take over the starting job. The most disturbing note in the report was the rumor that he's close to 300 pounds and not exactly prepared for offseason programs.

Pacman Needs to Shut his Mouth
Mon Mar 10, 2008

ESPN's John Clayton reports CB Pacman Jones is clearly going to be traded by the Titans once he is reinstated by the league. Jones' suspension is indefinite and his attorney is going to try to push to get something done around the draft. If Jones is going to go to a new team, he would need minicamps and training camp to get ready for the season. The problem with Jones coming out on radio and pushing for trades to teams like Dallas is that it doesn't help his cause. Jones clearly wants to play but he also needs to behave and be quiet. On suspension, he is not dealing from a position of strength.

Maybe Mike Williams started him on his diet now that he's with the Raiders.

If Dallas Cowboys invest in Pacman, it's game over

Dallas Morning News columnist Jean-Jacques Taylor 02:42 AM CDT on Tuesday, March 11, 2008
Jerry Jones is desperate to get the Cowboys over the hump, but he should stay clear of a troubled player who can't be trusted. Memo to Jerry Jones: Don't even think about acquiring Pacman Jones. Not today. Not next month. Not ever. He ain't worth it.

You can't trust him. How could you? We have 44 strip clubs in Dallas. Another 14 in Fort Worth. And eight more in Arlington. You don't have enough security to prevent him from "making it rain" in Dallas-Fort Worth. Even if you did, he could fly down to Houston on his off day and find 45 more strip clubs. Or head to Austin, which has 14 strip clubs. Or San Antonio, which has 20 topless joints.

Pacman is currently serving a suspension for violating the NFL's player conduct policy time after time after time. He didn't even play last year, and there's no guarantee league commissioner Roger Goodell will let him play this year. You know why? He makes dumb decision after dumb decision after dumb decision.

But it's easy to see why the Cowboys have had internal discussions about whether to acquire Pacman.

He's a phenomenal talent. A game breaker. A difference maker. The kind of player who can change the game on defense and special teams any time he touches the ball. That's why Tennessee took him with the 6th pick of the 2005 draft, despite his off-the-field issues at West Virginia.

If Pacman had the slightest bit of common sense, he'd be one of the NFL's most popular and marketable players. Instead, he's the poster child for why fools and their money soon part.

Jerry, though, is desperate to win. He's embarrassed by the 11-year drought without a playoff win. And he's frustrated by last year's debacle against the Giants, which is what it was, regardless of New York's Super Bowl win. Jerry is so desperate, you know he's willing to add Pacman to the roster, whether it's signing him as a free agent if he's released, or working a trade with Tennessee.

Understand, the thought of adding Pacman to the Cowboys' roster is not revolting because of his numerous off-the-field issues. Professional sports is not about signing boy scouts and choir boys, it's about winning championships. Teams don't have a moral responsibility to sign players who do charity work and provide our children with outstanding role models. Considering the outrageous ticket prices, a team's first commitment to its fans is putting a winner on the field.

In the last few years, Jerry has signed other players with off-the-field issues such as Terrell Owens, Tank Johnson and even Alonzo Spellman. Each had his own unique set of circumstances. Say what you want about T.O., but he has never had any legal issues worth noting. The worst thing you can say about him is that he's occasionally selfish. In the big picture, that's not really that bad. Johnson, who spent four months in jail prior to the 2007 season, has obviously had legal issues, but he was signed to be a role player. So was Spellman, who was battling a mental disorder.

Pacman's talent won't let him be a role player. He's going to be a starter, sooner or later, and the Cowboys will rely on him to help them win games. And that's when he'll do something stupid. It's only a matter of time before he breaks the owner's heart and puts a season in jeopardy. You know it. I know it.
Even Jerry knows it, but the lure of winning another Super Bowl has him so intoxicated, he's probably trying to convince himself he can overlook Pacman's flaws.

We all know what would happen at the news conference to announce Pacman's arrival. Jerry would talk about his player development department and how consultants Calvin Hill and Dr. Jacqualene Stephens are among the best in the country at relating to players and working with them to change their behavior.
He'll talk about how the Cowboys have had few off-the-field issues the last several years, and how the club has a support system that will bring out the best in Pacman.

Then Pacman's agent will talk about how his client is a changed man. And we'll hear testimonials from former teammates or coaches such as Ray Sherman on how Pacman is really a quality young man with a good heart, who just happens to make bad decisions on occasion.

All of the words will be heartfelt and spoken with sincerity. They might even be true. None of that matters. He's proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that he's a knucklehead. All he can bring the Cowboys is embarrassment. They don't need him to win a Super Bowl.

RISKY BUSINESS
Jean-Jacques Taylor takes a look at some players with baggage that Jerry Jones has signed in the past, and how it worked out for the Cowboys:

TANK JOHNSON
Joined Cowboys: 2007
Risk factor: low
Worth it? We'll find out this season

TERRELL OWENS
Joined Cowboys: 2006
Rick factor: Medium
Worth it? Without a doubt

ALONZO SPELLMAN
Joined Cowboys: 1999
Risk factor: High
Worth it? No, because his skills had diminished

J.T. O'Sullivan Could Win Starting QB Job
Wed Mar 12, 2008

The Sacramento Bee reports San Francisco 49ers QB J.T. O'Sullivan could wind up starting for the team this season. There's an assumption that QB Alex Smith and QB Shaun Hill will duke it out for the starting spot this offseason while newcomer Sullivan will slide conveniently into the No. 3 spot. But new OC Mike Martz insisted that O'Sullivan had just as good a chance as Smith and Hill of becoming the 49ers' starter in 2008. In fact, Martz predicted that O'Sullivan would jump out to an early lead when the team's offseason program begins on Monday because of his familiarity with Martz and Martz's system. (O'Sullivan was a backup in Detroit last season).

Woman Wants Case Against Randy Moss Dismissed
Tue Mar 11, 2008

AP reports a woman who obtained a restraining order earlier this year in a domestic violence case against New England Patriots WR Randy Moss wants the case dismissed, court records show. Rachelle Washington, 35, filed papers March 3 with the Broward County Circuit Court clerk's office requesting that the order be dissolved and the case closed. The restraining order had required the All-Pro wide receiver to stay at least 500 feet from Washington. Moss, 31, denied he harmed Washington as she claimed at her Florida home on Jan. 6, or that he prevented her from seeking medical attention. Moss did acknowledge there was an "accident" involving Washington, but would not be more specific. Moss attorney Richard Sharpstein said Tuesday his client was "extremely pleased" by the outcome. Moss plans to submit a claim to his insurance company for medical bills for services such as X-rays that Washington had for a hand injury, Sharpstein added. "There has finally been acknowledgment that the injuries were not intentionally inflicted," Sharpstein said.

Gene Upshaw Sees A Lockout Coming

NFLPA Executive Director Gene Upshaw says he believes the owners are setting the stage for a lockout that could threaten the 2011 NFL season. “That’s where we’re headed. They’re going to try to lock us out,” Upshaw tells Lester Munson of ESPN.com. The Collective Bargaining Agreement is set to expire after the 2010 season, and the owners and the players appear far off from any type of negotiations that could lead to an agreement to extend labor peace beyond 2010. The owners think they gave up too much during the last round of negotiations. “They think [the current deal] is too rich for the players, and they want to take some back,” Upshaw said. The 2011 season might feel like it’s a long way off, but the owners and the union should be addressing these issues now to avoid a labor stoppage.

Clinton Portis Excited About Redskins New Offense
Tue Mar 18, 2008

The Washington Post reports the Redskins are eager to learn HC Jim Zorn's version of the West Coast offense. "With Coach Zorn coming on board, I think it's going to be a more relaxed setting and things [will] open up," RB Clinton Portis said. "I'm sure you're going to see a lot of players go wild this year. Wild as in stats, not trouble wild. "It's just going to be more of an opportunity to open up, spread out, and get [tight end Chris] Cooley in great position and put [wide receiver] Santana[ Moss] in."

What's Zorn's version?

Owners Expected to End Labor Deal Early
Wed Mar 19, 2008

The Washington Post reports the first of the two early termination deadlines is Nov. 8, and Gene Upshaw, executive director of the NFL Players Association, said he expects the owners to notify the union by then that they're ending the labor deal early. Such notification would make the 2009 season the final one in the deal with a salary cap and would leave the agreement expiring after the 2010 season. It could set the stage for a labor showdown and even a possible work stoppage in 2011. "I think they're more dug in than they were the last time," Upshaw said of the owners in a telephone interview last week. "They've basically said they want changes and they're going to do the early opener. There's no doubt in my mind that's where this is headed. We haven't had any formal discussions about their position, but what I've gathered is they don't like the deal."

Bad Behavior Down 20% in NFL
Wed Mar 19, 2008

The Nashville Tennessean reports player behavior was the NFL's hot topic a year ago as Commissioner Roger Goodell pieced together a strengthened personal conduct policy and big suspensions for CB Pacman Jones, WR Chris Henry and NT Tank Johnson were on the horizon. A year later, the league says the crackdown has had the desired effect of serving as a deterrent, plus there's been a trickledown to college football. Coaches, current players and this year's draft prospects seem to agree. "Based on what we hear from the players and our clubs, we believe the policy has had a positive impact," NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said. "Everyone clearly understands what is expected and that we are held to very high standards. The positive impact is reflected in a decreasing number of incidents, which dropped 20 percent last year.

Fitzgerald's Contract Costing Cardinals in a Big Way
Wed Mar 19, 2008

ESPN's John Clayton reports the NFL still hasn't approved the language of Cardinals WR Larry Fitzgerald's four-year, $40 million contract, so the Cardinals remain stuck with a league-low 48 players on their roster and no cap room to add anyone. Except for re-signing LS Nathan Hodel as long-snapper and grabbing Travis LaBoy to replace LB Calvin Pace at outside linebacker, the Cardinals have let more than 156 players slip off the market during the first three weeks of free agency. During that time, 14 cornerbacks, 17 offensive linemen and 25 linebackers have come off the market. What will be left for the Cardinals is a bunch of minimum salary signing options.

NFL | Sharpton to ask league to cancel HOF game
Wed, 19 Mar 2008 14:07:00 -0700

The Associated Press reports Reverend Al Sharpton plans to ask the NFL to cancel the Hall of Fame game over allegations of police misconduct in Canton, Ohio. The National Action Network, founded by Sharpton, said the group is taking action because of police officers' aggressiveness and unnecessary attitude toward the citizens of the city, especially the black citizens. The Indianapolis Colts and Washington Redskins are scheduled to play in the Hall of Fame game Sunday, August 3.
