What if Arizona gave him permission?

According to multiple reports, Pro Football Hall of Fame offensive lineman Gene Upshaw has died at the age of 63. Upshaw, the Executive Director of the NFL Players association, had been battling pancreatic cancer.
He played from 1967 through 1981, was an 11-time All-Pro and won two Super Bowls with the Raiders.

Apparently he knew he had it for a whole 3 days.  My dad died of the same thing.  He knew he had it for a week.  It happened so damned fast.

My father died of that in 2002

In mid 2000 he was diagnosed with it and given 6 months.  He lived much longer but the last 3 months were pure hell.
My heart goes out to Upsaw family

SAN DIEGO -- Linebacker Shawne Merriman, who has missed more than a week of Chargers practice because of a sore left knee, is in the process of trying to figure out when he'll be able to play this season -- if at all.

Merriman said Thursday night that he has ligament damage and is evaluating his options. The trouble is "a loose ligament and [I'm] waiting to get more info on what I need to do," Merriman said in an e-mail to the North County Times.
He also told the San Diego Union-Tribune that he tore the knee's posterior cruciate ligament.
"It's finding out what do I need to fix, what I need to do," Merriman told the Union-Tribune by phone. "If it's left up to me, I want to play football. I can't stand sitting out."

Proud to say this guy grew up 5 miles from where I am.
Great story of persistence and belief in one's self.
Started as a record-setting QB at a small school here in SW MN and followed it all the way to the big time.
Best of luck to him (except against the Vikings of course)

Merriman actually has two torn ligaments, the lateral collateral and the posterior cruciate.  He is well served to have surgery before playing.  Otherwise the stress on his acl could be such that he could end up with a more serious Culpepper type injury.

If NE lost Moss or Brady, I think it's entirely possible they could be an 8-8 team.  Brady to Moss has covered a lot of flaws, and NE has not drafted particularly well the last few years.  Their D is old and slow, and they let Samuel go.

The Arizona Cardinals are expected to name Kurt Warner as the team's starting quarterback, a team source said Sunday.

Warner
Matt Leinart's poor performance Saturday night against the Oakland Raiders probably sealed the decision.

Leinart had three interceptions in the first half and completed just 4 of 12 passes for 24 yards. His passer rating was 2.8. The Cardinals won the game 24-0.
The source said Leinart's training-camp performance has been uneven, and the Cardinals are concerned about his arm strength and consistency

Leinart sunk to new lows in suck-i-ness, and the Cardinals still blew away the Raiduhs.
Looks like I'm gonna have to burn the rest of my Raider Stuff.
I had been holding on, hoping Al would come out of the coma, or die, and neither seems to be happening.

Exactly

They need to really develop their running game this year as their defense can not stand to be on the field too long.  John Lynch?  For who, for what?

The Eagles went through them like they were the 98 Vikings - and that was against the first string.

Adalius Thomas doesn't even look the same player he was in Baltimore.

RAIDERS

Used to be my favorite team.  The old Raiders died the day Bo got hurt.  Yes, they have had a couple of "runs" since but their defense was a shell of its former self and the long ball was absent.  The Raiders were built on a punishing defense and the bomb.

You read me right, John.
THAT's when I was a Raiduh-lover also.
And you're right on about when it started to die.
The Gruden SB year was a positive blip that ended up eventually gutting them. (again)
The Glory Days are ovah.
But man, they were fun in the Mad Stork/Tatum/Branch/Freddie/Plunkett/Stabler/Casper days.
And the best? The Marcus Allen days, for me.
They were my AFC team. Thought it would be great when they met our Vikes, can't lose, right?
Not so. Losing to them hurt badly, the worst of all 4 painful SB losses imo.
Wanted to celebrate with them, but couldn't.

Osi Umenyiora Likely OUT for the Season
Sun Aug 24, 2008

ESPN, citing the Star Ledger, reports New York Giants DE Osi Umenyiora (left knee) suffered serious ligament damage in his left knee Saturday night that will likely sideline him for the rest of the season. The Pro Bowl star defensive end will have surgery, rather than try to rehabilitate the injury. X-rays taken during the Jets' 10-7 win were negative. An MRI took place on Sunday. "I talked to him when he was in the locker room, in the training room," fellow defensive end DE Justin Tuck said Saturday of a halftime exchange. "Obviously, he was down. It's unfortunate when any injury occurs, but hopefully, it is nothing serious and he will not miss any time." Umenyiora left the locker room before the game ended and was not available for comment. DT Barry Cofield did not get a chance to talk to Umenyiora but he recalled the play. "It looked like he was turning the corner and just kind of took an awkward step," Cofield said Saturday. "The turf is hard and playing at that speed on that edge, you can tweak things." The 26-year-old could not put any weight on his leg. He was helped off the field with his arms wrapped around the shoulders of two trainers. The Giants are a bit thin at defensive end this season with the retirement of seven-time Pro Bowler DE Michael Strahan. Tuck has replaced Strahan. New York also signed veteran DE Renaldo Wynn in the offseason. With Umenyiora sidelined, the Giants could move strongside OLB Mathias Kiwanuka back to defensive end. He was switched to linebacker last year so the team could put its best 11 players on the field.

The problem with the Raiduhs is Al Davis is the only person in football who still believes that football starts at the corners

I know you said that in jest but...

They actually have the opposite affect.  Most times they weaken them from what I know.

Not football but...

Did anyone see the ESPN piece on former boxer George Chuvalo this morning?  The guy fought 96 fights and never hit the canvas - even in fights with Ali, Frazier, and FOREMAN!  Tragically, he lost 3 of his 4 sons to heroin and his wife to suicide.

What a story

Adam Jones, formerly Pacman, was reinstated today, he can play in the opener. The ESPN guys were talking about how Jerry has a security guy with Adam at all times so he won't get a call in the middle of the night that would be embarrassing to the Cowboys. I guess the guys whole job is to keep Adam away from seedy types and seedy places.

This brings up a concern for me. If Jerry Jones is paying for this guy, instead of Adam Jones paying for him, then this benefit should count against the salary cap, in my opinion.
