OK.  Time for me to make my predictions for the 2008 NFL season

I am going to do this division by division

First is the AFC East.
New England – Still the class of the division and an offensive juggernaut with a mastermind coach…but the Defense is old and they had better hope and pray to God that Brady doesn’t get hurt.
New York Jets – Adding Brett Favre will help them…but it wont win them anything major.  After a 10-6 playoff season in 2006 they fell big time last year.   I predict about 8-9 wins tops.
Miami Dolphins – In full rebuilding mode…they will get a sold season out of Ricky Williams and they will win more games than they did in 2007 (or course that could mean only 2 wins).
Buffalo Bills – Young hungry team…if they can avoid the injury bug that decimated their team last year…they could be the sleeper to make the playoffs.  Karma says that they will go relatively injury free this season after they dropped like flies last year.

My prediction
Not hard   New England wins the division easily, but doesn’t win every game.
The Jets are competitive but will be lucky to make the playoffs.
The Dolphins will finish deal last, but will give their rivals fits all season long.
Buffalo is my pick to make a surprise run into the playoffs this year.

AFC North
Pittsburgh – Great Defense, Great running game…good QB and WRs  But that OLine is going to get Roethlisberger killed and have trouble opening up running lanes for Parker and Mendenall.
Cleveland – I think this year will prove last year was something of a fluke.  They came out of nowhere after sucking for years.  They have a lot to prove…but they are not going to sneak up on anyone this year.
Cincinnati – What a mess this team has become.  Marvin Lewis will be lucky to be HC after this season (maybe we should be watching to replace our DC after this season?).  The offense will struggle with WRs hurt and dogging it.  The defense is atrocious.  I mean really bad.  (on second thought…no thanks on Lewis).    Worse than the Vikings in Denny’s last year bad…
Baltimore – will have their usually stout defense.  But the offense will struggle with the QB situation.  New coach will have growing pains.

My Prediction
Pittsburgh will win the division hands down…Baltimore will surprise but miss the playoffs, Cleveland will return to Earth, and Cincinnati will challenge for the first overall draft pick.

AFC South
Indianapolis – Class of the division but some guys are getting older.  The defense depends on Sanders being healthy, and he has trouble staying healthy, but that Offense knows how to score and Tony Dungy is not going to go out as HC with a team that doesn’t fight for the whole enchilada.
Jacksonville – Their challenging for the division is going to depend on two things.  Health of the QB and is there ANY receivers on this team that can catch the ball.  Otherwise solid team all around.
Houston – will make a push but will be outclassed by Indy and Jax
Tennessee – if there is a team with worse receivers than Jax…this is it.  Vince Young has a lot to prove this year.

Tough division to predict.
Indy probably stays on top with Jax making the playoffs.
Titans and Houston both make pushes for the final playoff spot, but neither make it (Bufflo/Toronto Bills do).

AFC West
San Diego – Determined to prove to everyone they are the class of the conference.  But…Norv Turner has a way of effing things up.  I was amazed he didn’t last year.  But if Merriman isn’t his dominant self due to his knee, and Tomlinson misses any games for any reason…this team could crumble quickly.
Denver – for the first time in years…people are saying they wont have a good running game.  I’ll believe it when I see it.  Shanahan has a way of making nobodys into stars at that position.
KC – in full rebuilding mode…
Oakland – Will suck as long as the senile old owner Al Davis can’t keep from meddling

Weakest divison in the AFC
Chargers should win it in a walk.  Their only competition should come from Denver…who don’t look that good themselves.  Oakland and KC will challenge Miami and Cincinnati for the first overall pick in the draft.

Conference Predictions
New England
Pittsburgh
San Diego
Indianapolis
Jacksonville – Wild Card
Buffalo – Wild Card

Pitt – bad oline ruins their hopes
SD – finds away to choke another one away against NE
Buffalo – upstart in the playoffs gets reality handed to them
Jax – no one to throw the ball to…their running game is stuffed.

The mystique of New England will carry them to the AFCCG with Indy for another classic.  Indy wins one for the good guy coach to get one more shot at another SB title.

Adam Jones, formerly Pacman, was reinstated today, he can play in the opener. The ESPN guys were talking about how Jerry has a security guy with Adam at all times so he won't get a call in the middle of the night that would be embarrassing to the Cowboys. I guess the guys whole job is to keep Adam away from seedy types and seedy places.

This brings up a concern for me. If Jerry Jones is paying for this guy, instead of Adam Jones paying for him, then this benefit should count against the salary cap, in my opinion.

Just because he's on JJ's payroll doesnt mean the security guard can't have a good time.

One of the things we’ve learned about Adam “Pacman” Jones in the last couple of years is that he spends a lot of time at strip clubs, and that trouble seems to follow him when he’s there.
So it’s good to know that Jones has now started spending his time at establishments where the female employees wear a bit more clothing.
Jones was at Hooters when he got the phone call informing him that his suspension is over, Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News reports.
Jones told Watkins, “It feels good man, you know, to get a second chance and I just have to take advantage of it. First and foremost, I don’t want to let myself down, definitely my little girl down. I’m thankful for Jerry [Jones], the fans in Dallas and my teammates for believing in me. I need to keep doing what I’ve been doing to get reinstated staying with myself and my teammates and staying away from those knuckleheads and just stay focused.”
The “knuckleheads” Jones refers to are apparently the circle of friends who have been blamed by some for the off-field trouble Jones has gotten into. A lot of that trouble has happened in and around strip clubs. Hopefully there are no “knuckleheads” at Hooters.

Now for the NFC

NFC East
Dallas – probably the class of the conference now.  But TO is a ticking timebomb that hasn’t blown yet.  Something is going to give soon.
Philly – All their hopes lie in one question – Can Donovan McNabb stay healthy…if so, they challenge for the division title, if not, they spend January at home.
Redskins – new coach means growing pains…but the new coach did inherit a team on the rise with a good young QB and decent receivers and a top notch D and running game.  Could be a surprise team this year.
Giants – won the superbowl last year…will struggle to make the playoffs this year.

Dallas should win this hands down.  Philly is the enigma here.  Giants return to Earth and Redskins reach for the sky.

NFC South
Is there a more convoluted division?
Carolina – Coach on the hot seat, needs his QB to stay healthy and its once dominant pash rusher to return to form.  So far so good, but this team is teetering on the edge of disaster…again.
Atlanta – looking at another top 5 draft pick.  In long rebuilding project.
New Orleans – Could be hosting the NFCCG if all goes well
Tampa – Gruden aint no wiz kid anymore.

There will be one…count them ONE playoff team from this division and it will very likely be one of the best teams in the conference.  The Saints are going to be very good IMHO.  Carolina is going to fall apart, Tampa is getting old at key positions,   Atlanta doesn’t have a prayer.

NFC North
Minnesota – I will have to do a more in depth analysis later, but rest assured they are set…it all depends on TJack not effing it up.
Green Bay – Very good defense but a QB situation that will end up killing them.
Bears – It is impossible to take this team seriously with either Kyle Orton or Rex Grossman at QB and no good WRs
Lions – They could be good, but as long as Matt Millen is running the team…they will find ways to blow it.  I haven’t heard any brash predictions from Jon Kitna yet about win totals…I wonder why.

Minnesota is going to win this division.  Green Bay will return to Earth after playing way over their heads last year.  Bears will have their normal rash of injuries on defense and the Offense will be as abysmal as always.  The Lions are IMHO the only team in this division with a shot at a wildcard.  They could surprise… but the Matt Millen factor is keeping me from predicting them in the playoffs.

NFC West
Rams – Need to keep the team healthy and protect the QB.
49ers – JT O’Sullivan at QB…Need I say more?
Cardinals – They just find ways to lose don’t they?  With some of the talent they have on this team you would think they could win more...
Seahawks – should have the easiest road to a division title in the entire NFL.  Only the Seahawks can prevent the Seahawks from making the playoffs.

Seahawks are the only Playoff caliber team here.  Only the Cardinals have a chance to surprise but their history, much like the Lions, shows they have a tendency to find ways to blow it.

Conference predictions
Dallas
Minnesota
New Orleans
Seattle
Philly – Wild card
Washington – Wild Card

Washington gets to the playoffs but can’t get past the first round
Philly will suffer at the hands of New Orleans
Dallas will lose in the divisional round again
To Minnesota
Seattle wont get past New Orleans
New Orleans hosts the NFCCG and beats Minnesota and loses to Indy in the SB.

Good stuff Scott. I agree with a lot of what you wrote.

We'll take New Orleans though. At home or on the road.

Kitna during OTA's:

Our expectation is we will be disappointed if we don’t win 10 games,” he said today, when the Lions held their first Organized Team Activities session in Allen Park. “Because that will mean we’re not in the playoffs … I can’t make it any simpler than that. Anybody who says that’s not their expectations level is unfortunately not that much of a competitor.”

Interesting.  I bet the league looks at it as....The guy is an employee of JJ only.  Even though his job is keep knucklehead out of trouble.  That won't count against the cap ala the plane pilot, cooks, med staff ect...

Again, Goodell shows what a fraud he is.

I've called him a paper tiger for a year now.  He'll never stand up to a guy like JJ.  Now if it were some schlub that wouldn't fight back.....he'd kick him out of the league.

I'd take him as our #1 reciever in a heartbeat.....in fact, I'd trade all but Rice and maybe Wade as slot and roll with that set, recalling Nance and keeping 1 rookie we cut as backups/ST'rs

I'm not sayin' Pac-Man doesn't deserve punishment and suspensions, but it's funny how we hardly ever hear or read about what his life was like before he made it to West Virginia.  I promise you, not one of the people in here would trade childhoods with this guy.

Again, I'm not excusing his behavior, instead I'm amazed that he even made it to the NFL, based on his early life.
Read about him and then tell me how you would have responded/resulted if that was your life.

Chad Johnson is greatly overrated.

I don't see him dominating in big games and he is not a big TD producer.  I don't like WRs who don't get into the end zone.

90 catches a year and only once has he hit 10 TD catches in a season.  I see him more like Bad Moon Rison than Jerry Rice

Another tragedy

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) -- Jacksonville Jaguars offensive tackle Richard Collier was shot while waiting for some women outside an apartment early Tuesday and sustained life-threatening injuries, authorities said.
Collier, 26, and former Jaguars defensive end Kenneth Pettway were waiting in a car when a gunman fired into the vehicle, said Jacksonville Sheriff's Office spokesman Ken Jefferson. Collier was shot several times, but it wasn't clear where he was hit.
Collier was in critical condition at Shands Jacksonville Medical Center, a hospital official said. The motive behind the attack was unclear, and the sheriff's office was investigating. Pettway, who was released in final cuts Saturday, was not injured in the attack.
The shooting happened around 2:45 a.m. in a middle- to upper middle-class neighborhood just west of downtown Jacksonville and blocks from the St. Johns River.
Collier is the third NFL player to be shot in the past 18 months. Washington Redskins star Sean Taylor was fatally shot during what police said was a botched burglary attempt at his Miami-area home in November. Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams was killed when his rented limousine was sprayed with bullets minutes after leaving a New Year's party at a downtown Denver club in 2007.
Entering his third year after making the team as an undrafted rookie free agent, Collier competed for the starting job at left tackle but was beaten out by Khalif Barnes in the preseason.
Still, the Jaguars believe Collier could be a future starter. They even signed him to a contract extension earlier this year -- despite his arrest last season.
The 6-foot-7, 345-pound linemen was arrested Nov. 3 after officers found him asleep behind the wheel of his sports utility vehicle at a McDonald's drive-thru window. Collier failed field sobriety tests and had a blood-alcohol level of .096, according to police. In Florida, it is illegal to drive with a blood-alcohol level of .08 or higher.
Collier was suspended two games and fined by coach Jack Del Rio.
Collier's attorney disputed the police report and recommended that his client go to trial, but Collier didn't want the team to have to deal with the negative attention that it would generate. So he pleaded no contest and accepted six months of probation.
He publicly vowed to stay out of trouble, not wanting to blow his chance of becoming an every-down starter in the NFL -- something he felt like he nearly did in high school.
Coming out of high school in Shreveport, La., Collier didn't have the grades or test scores to attend most colleges, so he stayed home with his mother and got a job in the produce department at Wal-Mart. Instead of blocking defenders and creating running and passing lanes, he was arranging heads of lettuce, stacking ears of corn and washing fruit.
He worked there for two years before deciding to give football another chance. He enrolled at Tyler Junior College in Texas, about 90 miles west of Shreveport, and showed up weighing 390 pounds and having not lifted a weight since high school.
Collier quickly got his grades -- and body -- in order and worked his way into the starting lineup. He transferred to Valdosta State in 2004 and helped the Blazers win the Division II national championship that season. He earned All-America honors as a senior in 2005.
But he failed to impress many NFL scouts.
The Jaguars were the only team to bring Collier in for a workout before the draft, so signing with Jacksonville as an undrafted rookie was an easy decision. His only other choice, he thought, was to go back to the produce section.
"It took me to lose everything to recognize how much I had," Collier said during his rookie season. "It was a blessing, really. I found out how it would be if I didn't work hard and apply myself."

NFL has Yet to Make Decision on Chad Johnson's Name Change
Thu Sep 4, 2008

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports the NFL made no decision Wednesday on how to refer to the former WR Chad Johnson, who legally has changed his name to Chad Javon Ocho Cinco. Bengals HC Marvin Lewis, who referred reporters' questions to the league office, said the receiver had wanted to make the change since March. "It's not a stunt; he changed his name. It's a legal document," Lewis said.

What's the big deal here?  If he changed his name, he changed his name.  If it is legal, then the name on the back of his jersey should reflect his legal name...just as the league rules state.

It's not a "big deal", but then again neither is having your jersey hang out, or wearing black shoes to honor Johnny Unitas. Both things the league didn't allow, along with a lot of other stuff that's only there for public perception.

I'm all for people being headcases, but ocho comes from his affiliation with the NFL and the Bengals. It wouldn't bother me either way, if they allow it or don't on his jersey.

Chad is really trying to be the NFL's Dennis Rodamn, I think. They won't let him get nearly as far with it.

Adam SchefterCulpepper announces retirement
Posted: Adam Schefter | Adam Schefter | Tags: Culpepper

Just received this email from Daunte Culpepper:

Adam,

Since I do not have a team where I can do a press conference, I chose to write what I would have said. You are the first to get this.

– Daunte

Farewell NFL

When free agency began this year, I had a new sense of excitement about continuing to rebuild my career in the same way that I had rebuilt my knee after my catastrophic injury in 2005. Unfortunately, what I found out was that the league did not share any of the optimism about me as an Unrestricted Free Agent that I expected. In fact, there was an overwhelming sense that there was no room for me among this year’s group of quarterbacks; whether in a starting, competing or a backup role. No matter what I did or said, there seemed to be a unified message from teams that I was not welcome to compete for one of the many jobs that were available at the quarterback position. It seems that the stance I took in both Minnesota and Miami regarding my rights as a person and player has followed me into Free Agency.

After taking a long look at my career and my personal convictions, I have decided to begin early retirement from the NFL effective immediately. Since the beginning of training camp I was told that my opportunity would come when a quarterback gets hurt. I cannot remember the last time so many QB’s have been injured during the preseason. I have been strongly encouraged from family, friends and league personnel to continue to be patient and wait for an inevitable injury to one of the starting quarterbacks in the league. I would rather shut the door to such “opportunity” than continue to wait for one of my fellow quarterback’s to suffer a serious injury. Since I was not given a fair chance to come in and compete for a job, I would rather move on and win in other arenas of life.

The decision I made in 2006 to represent myself rather than hire an agent has been an invaluable experience. I now understand why so many people within the NFL community are uncomfortable with a player really learning the business. The NFL has become more about power, money and control than passion, competition and the love of the game. Regardless of this shift, player’s rights are still supposed to be a part of this league. Since I will not be given the opportunity to honor the memory of Gene Upshaw by wearing a patch on my uniform this year, I will instead spend some of my energy applying what he taught me about standing up for what is right and not sitting down for what is clearly wrong.

I want to thank my family and my fans for their unwavering belief in me as a person and a player. I embraced both the peaks and the valleys of the game and my career. I am a better person today as a direct result of the experience of playing in the NFL. I can now focus on the enjoyment of watching some of the greatest athletes in the world play the game I love without the distraction of waiting for those elusive return phone calls.

Thankfully,

I think it would be good humor if Cincy traded him to a team that already had a player wearing 85 and wasn't about to give it up.  How stupid would "Ocho Cinco" look above 82?!
