Agree. Personally, we coddle/prop up these kids too much from way too early of an age. It's no wonder they see themselves above the law, etc. They are in many instances. Because of us. It needs to stop. These guys are no better than you and me. They just have a different talent in life and a larger paycheck.

It's time we start treating them no different than you or me. So we'll lose a more talented guy here or there. So what. We do in all kinds of other professions and walks of life. It won't diminish the product because you won't know what you're missing. Just like it doesn't now; there are tons of "best" athletes that never make it due to drugs, crimes, etc. In the end, it doesn't matter. Let's all try to do better.

The lesson I see from this (and hope always to practice) is never to discipline a child in anger. It's so counterproductive to the message and leads to this kind of abuse. Even parents who don't spank can resort to verbal and emotional abuse when angry. I'm sad for all parties involved here - even for Adrian, because it sounds like he didn't have a willfully abusive *intent.*

Plus a 4 year old vs. one of the most impressive physical specimens on earth? Not exactly a fair "fight". Really disgusts me. I don't think he necessarily "meant" to really hurt him. I just think he's got a very warped view. And I'm not sure the distinction matters one little bit to the kids he's beat (I'm assuming this is not an isolated incident).

Honestly, I don't view Adrian as a monster in this. He's doing what was done to him as a child, and what he believes is necessary for his child's development. It's a systemic problem of bad parents begetting bad parents - I think we'd be shocked at how often this kind of "discipline" takes place. I don't intend to minimize the abuse at all. It's really sad and so counterproductive, I think. But to me, we need to find a way to educate parents who are trying to do the best they can - and doing the only thing they know and were raised on.

Agree with all of that Pete, without excusing what he's done. Not necessarily equating the two, but if a parent was sexually abused as a child, that doesn't mean we condone them sexually abusing their own children next.

Ignorance is not an excuse, for a variety of reasons. Legally, I'm sure most know why it's not a defense.....because it can be faked.

Having children is easy, too easy. Raising them is hard.

Peterson's upbringing and culture is not an excuse for criminal behavior as an adult. The man has resources. He's not a share cropper switchin' the boy cuz he acted up.

That's true. But look at Adrian's reaction to the police. He really thought what he did was acceptable, even virtuous. A parent who is sexually molesting his child doesn't respond like that (same thing with an abusive husband), and it's why I look differently at this case. Of course, for the poor child, the intent doesn't really change anything, but it does make a difference in how I view the parent.

And to be clear: I don't mean to suggest that Adrian should avoid the consequences for his actions. Not at all. He's probably lost the right to be a parent for awhile, and if he ends up with a lot worse punishment, so be it.

If it was some local guy living in a trailor home..and you read in the local paper he whipped a small four year old child with a switch so bad his scrotum had marks on it. I would think the perpetrator was a piece of shit.

Money and fame shouldnt change that opinion should it? My god we are talking about a four year old. I realize Oklahoma isnt exactly Harvard but Adrian did go to college...we are not talking about somebody raised in the hills.

This isnt some teenager lipping off or doing something bad. It was a four year old romping around a video game console. Reading some of the texts AP sent to the mom after the beating you can summarize it wasnt the first time and probably BAU for him.

Quite a guy. Doesnt raise the four year old and when he is around he beats the four year old with a stick.

Nothing I said is exaggerated or made up...the wounds and texts are all out there and AP denies none of it. His defense is going to be "I am stupid and did not know it was bad".

Just an ugly, ugly deal.
Good stuff in here, all.
Frustrating and disappointing and disturbing.
Adrian totally appears to know no better. Not an excuse, just the truth.
It will surely haunt him. Glad to hear some of you younger parents are constantly becoming more aware of the damage we can do to children.
I never hit my two sons, but I will regret forever being an intimidator and verbal abuser. I felt it was a step up from the way I was raised, and it was, but looking back, I didn't progress enough.
My two sons are both young men now, and they know how I feel and I know how they feel. They aren't angry or hurt but I still feel bad for what I felt I had to do at times to "keep them in line".
The good thing is, we have talked extensively about how they will parent, and just like I did ... they plan to use what they've experienced, to do a better job. I'm confident they will.

Yesterday I was of the mind to calm down and for the facts to come in. At that point I was hearing reports of an 11 year old son, that first grand jury refused to indict, etc. I grew up in an era where kids got spanked by their parents. The attitude was that they were trying to teach you right from wrong. I bought into the notion because 1. my father was an incredibly gentle man who I can count on 1 hand the total number of times he struck any of his 7 children, 2. It was always a single cuff to the back of the head with an open hand, 3. It was always followed and hour later with a long talk about what you did to earn it. 4. and I cant emphasize this enough WE WERE ALL OLDER THAN 4.

This isn't that scenario. There are no circumstances on earth that justify taking a switch to a 4 year old child! It's child abuse pure and simple. The only lesson his poor son learned was to fear his father.

I have no regrets about saying wait until we actually have some facts. Now that we have some facts, I can say that I am done with Adrian Peterson. This is incredibly disillusioning. It is a complete departure from the Adrian Peterson we have been SOLD over the years.

Seems like you guys have a better handle of the situation in here than in the other forum.

Some adopted a 'meh' attitude towards the situation and I find that disheartening.

A 'bit overboard' but still 'meh'.

Jeff A. of course sees it as a golden opportunity for the Vikings.

My kids are now embarrassed to have Adrian Peterson Vikings' clothing.

I keep telling them, support the team, not individuals. They come and go too quickly.

Disposable.

Been waiting for this one today!
Nothing will surprise me.
We could literally stomp them out of the place, wont surprise me.
They could embarrass us. Wouldn't surprise me.
Could be a nail-biter. Wouldn't surprise me. You see where I'm at.

We've looked good without AD before. Have to do it again.
Everyone needs to be ready to contribute a play or two.
Rudolph has to step up. Cpatt needs to keep producing. Thielen has to make something happen.
We cant turn the ball over.
We have to get our Defense off the field. Thats always our key. Can we stop the third down play.
Could also be the day someone new comes up big. Teddy better ready. He's always just a snap away.
THAT would electrify what should already be an electric place.
Lets get this thing rolling.

These pregames are usually brutal but they are especially unwatchable today. I've tried ESPN, NFL network and Fox....can't take it. The "best" part was Ray Lewis....of all ppl.....saying that getting an ass whoopin' as a kid made him the man he is today. All done, of course, in his preachers voice.
