The Phillies plan to name MacPhail as their top baseball decision-maker within the next week or so, Heyman writes in a full column. MacPhail’s title is expected to be named as the new team president, or something similar to that title. Upon MacPhail’s hiring, Gillick would shift to a consulting role similar to the one he held before assuming presidential duties in the wake of former president David Montgomery’s health concerns.

The time is now I guess....

I've read projections that show if Koskie's career had played out without the concussion problems (big IF), he would have been a Top 10 all-time third sacker.

Plus he was a defensive ace.

Certainly. Has to be tough to dial it "down" for long stretches.

That is a bit of a concern with Meyer, who I've seen throw 98 mph in the 7th inning before.

Continues to make me wonder how Nolan Ryan did it so well for so long.Freakish.

Hand in rice training.

For all the talk about the Nationals’ potential free agents –right hander Jordan Zimmermann, right-hander Doug Fister, shortstop Ian Desmond – could it be that the team should be most focused on keeping center fielder Denard Span?

Washington is deep in pitching prospects, while righty Max Scherzer is under club control through 2021 and lefty Gio Gonzalez through ’17. Trea Turner looms as a potential replacement for Desmond, and Michael Taylor, in theory, could replace Span.

Still, the Nats took off when Span returned from core-muscle surgery on April 19. They are 20-13 and averaging 4.94 runs with Span in the lineup, 8-9 and averaging 3.82 runs without him, according to STATS LLC.

That trend actually goes to the start of 2013, when Span joined the club – the Nats are 186-136 (.578) when Span starts, 24-28 (.462) when he does not.

Consider as well: Span is batting .335 since last season’s All-Star break, the best in the majors in that time frame (minimum 300 plate appearances).

Granted, Span will hit the market entering his age 32 season, and his defensive metrics do not always line up with the perception that he is an outstanding center fielder. At this point, though, his value to the Nationals is clear.

Span is aging well. Potential HOFer.

Huh?

.281 career BA, 5 HR/yr, 20 SB/yr, 45 RBI/yr, 75 RS/yr. Sure he is considered to be a good fielder, but I mean, c'mon! Am I missing some inside joke here, and that was sarcasm?

The Phillies announced that they have hired MacPhail, who will serve as a special assistant to Gillick for the remainder of the season before assuming the role of president at the end of the year. The team’s official statement is as follows:

“The Phillies announced today the hiring of Andy MacPhail to succeed Pat Gillick as president of the club following Gillick’s retirement shortly after the season ends. As president, MacPhail will oversee the entire organization, both its business and baseball operations. For the remainder of the season, MacPhail will serve as a special assistant to Gillick, during which time he will work closely with Gillick and chief operating officer Michael Stiles to become acclimated with the club’s operations and its personnel.”

Phillies principal owner John Middleton praised MacPhail’s blend of traditional baseball acumen and his prowess with analytics in a statement issued with today’s press release:

“Andy brings an uncommon blend of old school experience and new age thinking. … In 1986, Andy was the youngest GM in the history of Major League Baseball when he served in that role for the Twins. The following year, he became the youngest GM to win a World Series title. When the Orioles hired him eight years ago, Andy became the first president of baseball operations in Major League Baseball. During his tenure in Baltimore, he greatly expanded the use of statistical analysis in player evaluations. That’s the new age thinking.

Take that Terry Dinosaur Ryan

Delmon was DFA'd by the Orioles.
Colabello is having a nice year over in Toronto. Good for him.
I am not bemoaning letting him go, but I felt we gave up on him far too early.

The Phillies have designated righty Kevin Correia for assignment, the club announced. Fellow right-hander Severino Gonzalez has been recalled and will take a start on Thursday, per the release.

Correia, 34, spent time this spring with the Mariners and started the year in the Giants organization, ultimately opting out and signing with Philadelphia. He had solid results in his first several Triple-A starts, but has scuffled to a 6.56 ERA over 23 1/3 innings with the Phillies. Correia has struck out 5.4 and walked 3.1 batters per nine in that span. Never a hard thrower, Correia’s average fastball velocity is the lowest it has ever been, sitting between 88 and 89 mph.

Dating back to the start of his big league career in 2003, Correia has allowed 4.62 earned runs for every regulation game, putting up 5.7 K/9 against 3.0 BB/9 with a lifetime 44.1% groundball rate. His best season came in 2009 with the Padres, when he was worth 3.0 fWAR over 198 solid frames.

Easily one of the greatest Twin hitters ever. It's a shame and I hope for the best for him.

TERRY RYAN

What were you thinking???

The Sugar Land Skeeters of the independent Atlantic League announced that they’ve signed former Twins/Padres right-hander Tim Stauffer

That's all this guy was worth. And you, Mr Ryan thought he was worth the 2 mill.

Unreal.

This Speaks VOLUMES about Ryan's current ability to scout/evaluate talent. He was once good at it, now he's lost it.

It is time for Ryan to go.

Please God make this happen and Please God, make the new guy not be named Antony or Smith.

Former Major League Baseball player Ryan Doumit finds new love for sport by playing Softball with his childhood friends. KXLY 4 Sports Reporter Sarah Wheeler has the story.
Moses Lake, Wash. -
Three months out of the year slow pitch softball takes over Lauzier Memorial Park in Moses Lake.

"Twice a week, usually Tuesdays and Thursdays, there's a 7:45 game and a 9:00 o clock game," said former Major League Baseball player Ryan Doumit."

Teammate Ricardo Gamez added, "our team, we're kicked back, we like to have a few beverages and just make fun of each other."

Unlike most softball teams, this one is loaded with big-time talent. Starting at shortstop is 10 year big league vet Ryan Doumit, but he like to just be one of the guys.

"I try to be incognito," Doumit said. "I try not to be that guy, i want to blend in, I want to be just another guy on the team."

After spending the last decade between the Pirates, Twins, and Braves, Ryan Doumit has finally returned to his hometown of Moses Lake, much to the chagrin of his opponenents.

"He actually hit me off my left butt cheek in tournament play and left seams there, and it hurt," said opponent Abraham Escamilla.

"You saw it, he's still got it. Defensively too, he's by far the best player out here and for good reason obviously," added teammate B.J. Garbe who was also a first round draft pick coming out of high school.

Since there isn't much action behind home plate in softball, you won't find Doumit playing his normal position of catcher.

"Where's the place on the field that has the most action? You know, because I want the ball hit to me and at shortstop I've seen plenty of action," Doumit said.

While most young baseball players dream of playing in the big leagues, Doumit was dreaming of one day coming home and joining up with his friends.

"Last couple of years playing in the big leagues, I've always thought about, man, I can't wait for that day to come when I can play slow-pitch softball with my friends and just enjoy it," Doumit remembers. "This is my big leagues. This is the big leagues but smaller field, smaller crowd, and a lot less stress so I'm having a great time."

He's having a great time with his oldest friends, and newest teammates.

"I've known half of these guys on this team my entire life so I'm just another guy to them," Doumit said.

Gamez added, "he's always been that regular guy since I've known him. He's a big league player, but he's always humble."

You might think this team would be unbeatable with a couple pro's on the team, but they are struggling to string together the wins.

Doumit said, "I think the only stat we keep is wins and losses, and I think we're a game below 500 going into tonight so hopefully we can remedy that."

Win or lose, it's good to see a player have so much fun on a diamond so much smaller than the ballparks that kids dream of walking on.

Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau says that he still hopes to make it back to the team this year, as Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post writes. The veteran has managed to resume baseball activities as he seeks to work back from a concussion and neck sprain, and says the latter is a larger concern than the former. Certainly, it’s good to hear that Morneau’s long battle with concussion issues is not the primary cause for his long absence, and he adds that he has no plans to retire at this point. Morneau once looked like a possible trade candidate, though that ship has probably sailed. It remains to be seen how things will progress on his contract, which includes a $9MM mutual option ($750K club buyout) for next season.
