Got me thinking about our pitching prospects. I think one of the best ways to get a true evaluation of a prospect is "tradeability". ie considering all factors, like age, upside, stats, likelihood of success, etc. Would you trade Prospect A for Prospect B?

Of our A+ and above minor league pitchers, how do you guys rank them in that light? I think it's a little important, because there's a high likelihood we are going to trade at least a couple of these guys over the next year or so. I'll go ahead and start. For me, it's:

Romero: I just think his 100mph upside and stuff is too great. Almost untradeable to me for anything less than a true ace.
Gonsalves. I don't love his upside, but it seems like a good bet based on his track record that he'll be a "solid" major league starter. A 3-4 probably.
Thorpe: Lots of risk here, but also tons of upside, and a lefty.
DRod: Lots of risk here too, late bloomer, but nice transition and good stuff.
Stewart: Good pedigree, has disappointed, but has done solid.
Jorge: Still a chance to be a good starter, but more in the "eh" longterm category to me. Only 23, but I tend to think his best role may be as a reliever longterm.

From Phil Milller-Strib

If you’re looking for a prospect who might arrive more quickly (and who is off to a similarly hot start in the minors), you might want to pay attention to No. 35 overall pick Brent Rooker, chosen in the supplemental first round. The Twins knew that Rooker, 22, was a polished hitter coming out of Mississippi State. So far, he’s shown just that.

Rooker started the year at Elizabethton, the Twins’ higher-level rookie league team. The 6-3, 215-pound right-hand hitting outfielder crushed seven home runs in just 22 games, posting a .952 OPS while showing good plate discipline (11 walks). That earned him a recent promotion to Fort Myers — the Twins’ high-level Class A team, which means he bypassed the low-A team in Cedar Rapids.

Rooker is 0-for-10 at Ft. Myers so far in three games, with two walks and three strikeouts. That’s far too small of a sample size to say whether he will stick there or not. If he ends up succeeding there this year, Rooker could be on the fast track to at least getting a chance in the majors.

Several other high 2017 draft picks are off to notably strong starts as well. Among them: fifth-round pick Andrew Bechtold (third baseman from Chipola JC) has a 1.008 OPS at Elizabethton. Charlie Barnes (fourth round, left-handed pitcher from Clemson) has been dominating Elizabethton. He’s pitched five shutout innings in each of his last three starts, giving him a 1.31 ERA for the year.

Long story short: Lewis is the name everyone is focused on right now, but the first draft for Derek Falvey and co. could ultimately be judged on its depth. Rooker could be the first in a wave to make it long before Lewis is ready.

Was it Sweens who hated the Barnes pick. Very early but amazing start for him. Of course he should be quite strong at this level.

Barnes was a very polished pitcher coming out of college, despite his total lack of velo. It's not a real surprise that he can dominate a bunch of 18 and 19 year olds in the Appy league. He has been limited to 4 innings a start, so hitters aren't getting a great look at him. I'm a little surprised to see him walk 10 batters in just 20 IP. He is supposed to be a command guy.

Yes, they even build shrines to the great OBP Machine. Of course they had to tear down the Bobby Keilty shrine to make room for it.

Good thing we sent Gibby to AAA....so he can absolutely toy with those hitters down there.

That move still makes no sense.

Gibson has had plenty of opportunities to cement his spot on this roster, and he has failed. So what if he was good in his last start? What does his entire body of work this year look like? He's been terrible. They signed Colon in part BECAUSE Gibson had been awful. Colon has done enough to earn another start. Falvey doesn't owe Gibson a damn thing. And I highly doubt he's in their long term plans. When they trade Erv for prospects, Gibson will be back. I cannot believe so many are sticking up for Gibson here. How short are your memories. He has been terrible for two years now.

He's pitched better of late than Bartolo Colon.

I hope you're right that he's going to build up and get more successful innings. I'm just not confident in either of them. I'd take the guy who has done better of late.

The team still has options on him where they do not for other pitchers.

Yeah, if they try to demote Colonoscopy, he would probably exercise his option to leave. Oh no! Not that!

What the heck has Colon done? He's been worse than Gibson this year. At least Gibson has a bit of upside/stuff and age on his side. Colon has none of that.

I am just saying they have minor league options on Gibson. I was really hoping Colon would have another shitty outing and hang em up and take the decision out of the front office's hands.

Give it time....we will either trade Gibby for some magic beans or Colon will be releaseed or Garcia/Santana traded and then Gibby will be back for all of you Gibson lovers.

They are taking the only option that allows them to keep both for the time being. by next week our Starting rotation may look a bit different.
