Last year's draft, Twins wanted to replenish the catching stock in the system.
decided to go with Stuart Turner, from Ole Miss, the nation's best defensive draft eligible catcher.
Were some major concern about his bat, so he may have been over-drafted in Round 3.

Early returns on the 22-year old Turner at HiA Fort Meyers thru 112 ABs

.181 BA with a .525 OPS

That sounds like a typical Twins catcher. Good job filling that void.

I saw a couple of Cedar Rapids games this week. Wednesday at Cedar Rapids, Thursday at Quad Cities. A few notes:

What a beatdown both games. Neither Jorge or Slegers looked good at all. Jorge actually looked a lot more comfortable at times from the stretch, not a surprise given that he used to be a reliever.
Penilla looked decent in relief. Racked up some K's.
Not much talent at the plate. Kanzler looked ok, but longterm I think he may just be a 4th OF'er type.
Just crazy the difference in this year's club there vs. last year. Last year LOADED; now pretty much all those guys are at Ft. Myers. Not much to get excited about with that group.
Both great parks. I went to Cedar Rapids last year and enjoyed it again this year. Just a great place for a game. Highly recommend.
Quad Cities this was my first time. Even better park. Right on the water, with a new ferris wheel in LF (I'm sure LH hitters are going to love that!). One of the best minor league parks I've ever seen.

Going to try to catch a game at each of the affiliates this summer and make that an annual tradition. Really looking forward to my 2014 Ft. Myers and New Britain visits.

Indeed. There is filler in this group. Not many/any studs.

Can't say much about the offense in this draft.Zach Larson could be a possibility, on the DL right now.

Gardy said Chris Herrmann will play center field in games this time for Red Wings. Herrmann asked if he's still a catcher. He is.

Typical Gardy answer.
Yep, you are. But you'll be doing it in CF.

CF in the top 2 levels

AAA: Herrmann(catcher), Eric Farris(infielder)

AA: Wimberly (Infielder)

How sad is that?

Another huge indictment of Terry Ryan's skills.

When will Pohlad realize Ryan and his merry band of scouts are failures?

Anyone on the list, if they had the inclination to do so could demand accountability for results from the one below them.
None ever choose to do so.
Same people making the same decisions season after season.

Trade Revere AND Span then just hand the job off to a AA guy. Then the next year they get rid of two more CFs.
Probably because they think so highly of Aaron Hicks

Oliveros Back And Better
May 24, 2014 by Phil Miller

Injuries and a self-destructing pitching staff gave the Twins no choice when they acquired Lester Oliveros from the Tigers in the 2011 trade that sent Delmon Young to Detroit. They had to rush him to the majors and into their bullpen when he was 23.

“It was more out of necessity than anything he was doing,” vice president of player personnel Mike Radcliff said of the righthander’s 10-game stint in Minnesota. “Now, when he gets up there, he’ll have earned his way.”

And Radcliff has no doubt that Oliveros, 20 months removed from Tommy John surgery, is on his way. He had allowed just two earned runs in 14 innings with 14 strikeouts for Double-A New Britain.

“We were enthused about him in spring training, and he’s just ratcheted it up since then,” Radcliff said. “He looks like one of those guys whose arm gets better after Tommy John (surgery).”

Not a bad consolation for a guy who was only planning to have some bone chips removed from his elbow in August 2012, until his surgeon discovered a tear in a ligament.

Oliveros’ fastball can touch 96 mph now, already a couple of notches faster than pre-surgery. But the pitch that has the Twins picturing Oliveros at Target Field is the development of a hard breaking ball with three-quarters break.

“It’s got angle, it’s got bite, and having another pitch is giving him more confidence,” Radcliff said.

The Twins are gaining confidence, too, now that Oliveros has shed some of the weight he put on after surgery. The Maracay, Venezuela, native reported to spring training at nearly 250 pounds, close to 15 pounds heavier than before he hurt his elbow.

“He’s finally getting into shape again, and it’s making his pitches even firmer,” Radcliff said.
