Good post.

I've waffled about Hunter. It would be nice to keep him so the D isn't totally starting from scratch. On the other hand, does it really matter in the long term scheme of things?

Per Spotrac.

Pre June 1st(so no extending out dead cap), cutting Smith, Lowry, Bradbury and Mullens gets us to 60.5M under.

Might be able to get 2 for his price...Chase Young at 12 per and say one more. I would like to see what Deandre Swift wants for money; Barkely will want over 11.

Chase Young is a 4-3 guy, isn't he?

Get DE/DT Wilkens and CB Howard. Flores could get them here. And, of course, $$$$.

Chase Young can play 3-4. He did with Penn State. I would rather have Sean Murphy Bunting than Howard.....Howard isn't the same and has aged some and is more of a zone guy now.

The Vikings just signed Nick Muse. We are probably not drafting a TE now.

EAGAN, Minn. — The Vikings on Tuesday announced the re-signing of tight end Nick Muse, who was set to become an exclusive rights free agent next week.

Muse originally joined the Vikings as a seventh-round pick (227th overall) in the 2022 NFL Draft.

He has appeared in 12 games for Minnesota, including 10 in his rookie season when he logged 108 special teams snaps.

we should hold onto O'Neill at least until the draft; if we end up with Lefty Penix, he is our blind side guy

Also, I keep hearing how cheap Russ Wilson is going to be...like peanuts...they say he wants a prove it deal, which is perfect for a bridge QB...and I think he still has it...he had some clutch drives this year...I think JJ would want him and I think he would like to play with JJ

no better option in FA imo...

My bad I confused him with Arrington (Penn State).

You can do it for less. I'm guessing they can't afford him after Chris Jones deal and want to get something for him.

Chiefs 1.6M under right now.

Would pick #42 be enough? And a whopping contract on top of it.

Who knows about a second rounder. CB is a premium position, although it's not like Sneed is a shutdown corner.

But yeah, he'll be paid like one. And that's the problem. Like Tom said "Just how many top positional salaries are we going to set? We are already paying out or working on WR, LT, RT, TE."

I don't recall an NFL team buying its way to a SB win, especially starting out with a hollow roster.

Spitballing, SB winners drafted good/great QBs, draft well otherwise, made savvy trades, amassed draft picks to use when the time was right, maintained a decent cap surplus, signed under the radar types who panned out, etc. Then when the time was right/if needed they sprung in free agency to get a difference maker to help put their roster over the top. Of course this is more about teams besides NE and KC who have all-time QBs.

Trading high/multiple draft picks that automatically turn into high salaries (Hock, Sneed, etc), coupled with the aforementioned bank-breaker salaries at WR, LT, RT, will IMO doom the roster. There will not be cheap rookie talent because the picks aren't even available. The roster composition ends up being a handful of super high priced contracts and a ton of low draft picks & FA scrubs.

Opposition coordinators will have a field day exploiting those weaknesses. 17 field days per season.

How about instead of chasing FAs we find a 2nd, 3rd, or 4th round pick that is a consistently good starter? We need a lot of them, but for now just one. Baby steps.

The Vikings’ quarterback situation is unclear with Kirk Cousins officially hitting the open market on Monday afternoon.

But Minnesota has made a move to improve its defense.

According to a report from NFL Media, the Vikings have agreed to sign edge rusher Jonathan Greenard.

As an initial report on Greenard’s numbers, ESPN’s Adam Schefter notes the deal is for four years and worth $76 million with $42 million guaranteed.

Greenard, 26, was a third-round pick in the 2020 draft and just completed his rookie deal. He put together his best season in 2023, recording 12.5 sacks with 15 tackles for loss and 22 quarterback hits. He also had a pair of passes defensed and a forced fumble.

In 48 games with 32 starts, Greenard has 23.0 sacks, 32 TFLs, 41 QB hits, and eight passes defensed.

Greenard was No. 34 on PFT’s list of top 100 free agents.

19 Million a year for this guy??? I'd have rather kept Hunter for 23 or even a little more.

Update: The contract structure makes it realistically more like a 3 year 42 Million contract.
