Do you know the reason we finished the season so poorly was that we traded away some of our best vets to replenish our prospect list? Really bad take, Tim.

No, it was an excellent take Matt. The Twins purged the roster and the players they brought in haven't really impressed anyone. On top of that, there is no indication that Falvey is done purging. Joe Ryan is likely the next one out. I'm sure there will be a couple Ty France or Mickey Gasper type free agent signings, but that's about it. Shelton's .410 winning percentage isn't indicative of someone who gets the most out of his players.

The Twins just hired a guy to replace Rocco that they passed over when they hired Rocco in the first place.

Falvey thought Rocco was better than Shelton. Now he is replacing Rocco with the guy he didn't like as much. Only in Twins world. You can't make this stuff up.

Shelton was being groomed as a future Twins manager from the beginning. He was the only holdover from Molitor's staff to stay with Rocco. That was his stepping-stone to a managerial job. We are a step up from Pittsburgh, and could potentially be much more. You realize he's probably learned a lot more about managing since they hired Rocco over Shelton, right? By your way of thinking, nobody would ever be able to move up the ladder.

That remains to be seen.

The Pirates finished a game ahead of the Twins in a tougher division. Not sure how that makes Twins a step up from the Pirates. Age has not diminished Matt's gift of pretzel logic.

Do you know the reason we finished the season so poorly was that we traded away some of our best vets to replenish our prospect list? Really bad take, Tim.

And why did we have to replenish our prospect lists through trade?

Because they aren't doing a good job developing talent?

You just walked right into one of Sweens favorite criticisms of the Twins FO.

Baldelli had the talent until they traded it all away and still couldn't muster a competitive team. Then they traded away almost the entire bullpen. Shelton will be working under the same circumstances. Only he gets to start the season with no bullpen and by the time Falvey is done with this offseason, probably wont have much of a rotation either.

There are two reasons they hired Shelton. 1. Falvey is familiar with him. and 2. he's cheap.

I hold out no hope for this team to be anywhere near competitive over the next few seasons. Scratch that, We will compete with the White Sux to determine who is the worst team in the division.

+1 For Duran, Jax and Varland.....many of the prospects we received back were in our top 10.

Castro and Correa underachieved/$$$$ dump and Bader, France, and Columbe were on one year contracts. Paddock was also a no brainer that was overpaid.

The top 3 RP and Bader will be missed.

This feels like a placeholder manager meant to take the flak while the team tanks.

Never has a manager choice mattered less. I don’t know if Shelton is any good or not but who cares? They will do nothing in the off season to improve, so the core of the team will be Buxton, two decent starters (when healthy) and a few guys who hit .220 but we have high hopes for. The rest of the roster will be 3 or 4 over the hill injury prone free agents and ‘prospects’ (using the term generously) who we’ll be praying can make a giant leap.

Go get ‘em Derek!

No. I'll give you Buck and Keschall looks promising. Lee is a well below average major league hitter and that was supposed to be his strong suit. Defensively, he is not a major league SS. Lewis regressed badly last year. ERod for all of his upside is another big strikeout bat. Jenkins just reached AAA.

I’d give Lee another year. He showed more power and Kelly said after about 1000 at bats you know what you have. Lee is at 650, Larnach 1450, Wallner 850.

Culpepper is close but Lee needs another year to know.

ÌMy point is that you can't bank on him as a core player at this point. He's 65% the way to those 1,000 at bats and has a .636 OPS. Lee needs a big leap forward next year.

Yeah it will be a get to know them year but Lee can hit. He has to stay healthy is what I see.

Nope wont do anything to improve....in fact, I think they will do more to get worse. Like Trading Pablo and Ryan away.

This team will suck. suck suck suck.

No way in hell they add to the current payroll. If they set the payroll at 150 million they could have a very competitive team; even 135. It will be less than 90 most likely.

I disagree. We don't know that he can hit major league pitching.

Do you think they'll have to shut down a lot of the concessions because there won't be enough people at the ballpark?

Depends on how much you eat at the games.

Don't get me wrong. I like Lee more now than I did the year before. He looked more like he belonged. And he's young. But as of right now he's a .230 hitter with moderate at best power and below average fielding. Will he ever be more than that? Maybe. But the point is, if he's a big selling point on what going to be good about the 2026 Twins we are in deep deep trouble. Compare that to other playoff teams we just witnessed. We are light years away from that.

2025 MLB offseason buzz: Intel on free agency, trade rumors

Who are the biggest names you are hearing could be traded this winter?

Olney:
Because of the looming labor situation, some younger stars who are under team control in 2027 before reaching free agency could be shoved into the trade market by circumstances this winter.

The best example: Joe Ryan, who is eligible for free agency after the '27 season. Typically, the Twins could wait until next summer's trade deadline to consider taking offers for Ryan. However, with many executives believing that at least some of the '27 season is in jeopardy because of the labor strife, placing an appropriate trade valuation on Ryan will be much, much more complicated next July; teams might not be willing to part with significant return if they believe the '27 season will be truncated or lost. So if teams want to get proper return on players like Ryan, they could be better served to take offers this winter, rather than waiting until next summer.

Other players who could fit this timeline: MacKenzie Gore of the Nationals, the Guardians' Steven Kwan, the Cardinals' Lars Nootbaar and the Orioles' Adley Rutschman. If those players aren't going to be locked down with multiyear deals, the best time to get value in a deal for them could be this winter.
