Worth noting is that United has that rare Minnesota player that plays big in big games. Emanuel Reynoso had a big playoff run. He figured in every goal in United's playoff run. Three games, one goal and 7 assists.

That really could be the case. Emanuel Reynoso is already one of the very best players in the league and he is only 25. Dayne St. Claire became one of the best goalies in the league in his rookie year. The organization has stuck to a philosophy of finding young players on the way up versus looking for names and it seems to be paying off.

I watched it and was impressed. Tim is right. Reynoso is the real deal. That free kick goal was top flight. My guess is that the mid level Euro teams will be knocking on the door soon for him. I don't know much about Heath as a coach but he totally failed in that last 20 minutes. When you are up by 2 with little time remaining you are instructed to go in to "time wasting mode". Get it deep and force them to send long balls down the pitch that are easily defended When your keeper makes a save don't get up and boot in 3 seconds. Stay down until the ref starts paying attention. Then run around "trying to find someone" for another 30 seconds until you are about to get carded ect.... Instead, we make a save and within 3 seconds the ball is back in play. These are easily teachable and we failed at every level. And the keeper thing is just an example. The whole team failed that last 20. They panicked.

It really is shocking to go back and re-look at when we have had our successes (most are black and white TV) But I brought up Vanek for a reason The Gophers went into that natty championship run knowing they were pretty good, but they don't get either title, without their best player, being their best player. Vanek was simply all over everything those runs. His stamp was on the whole thing. As you point out, that's probably why we just aren't seeing championships here in anything. Kirby got it done, Vanek got it done, Morris got it done. Until someone steps up on our good teams and takes over huge games, we will never win another. Team sports, yeah ... but driven by great individual performances.

Moss had that same killer instinct but had 2 things that worked against him. He pissed the refs off by showing them up and he had a shitty owner that didn't actually care about winning.

The Michigan game (ironically) was classic .... it had "Minnesota collapse" written all over it It's almost odd to watch, all of a sudden, this guy just emerges. He steps up and refuses to be beaten. Everyone else we had, in that game, had resigned themselves to a postgame of "well, we had a great year" We are so damn good at that and so used to it. Vanek chose to change the game, change the program. You can almost see the others going "what the hell is this guy doing?" You can feel it happening. Sorry, just saw it lately and it's in my mind right now. Was an odd feeling as a Minnesota sports fan.

And he led that Boston team to a ring. When you get swept while averaging 24 points, 19 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals and 2 blocks, its not you holding the team back...
