That was a hell of a save by “Don Vito” (as he was affectionately known at my beloved Arsenal).

A walk off PK save is impressive but it wasn’t a total shock. I mentioned when he signed you were getting a very good keeper. I was shocked when I read that MN signed him. Never would have guessed he was available.

TJSweens -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (7/16/2019 12:02:51 PM)

What impressed me was reading Don Vito's recap. He said that before the game, they had gone through a lot of tape on Reto Ziegler taking PK's and determined he had a strong preference for going to the goalie's left. Mannone said he decided to hold position a little longer and recognized that there was no way the guy could go left with the approach he was taking to the ball and laid out right instead.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (7/16/2019 12:34:49 PM)

Yeap, that’s great prep and shows a good coaching staff. If you are the opposing manager you want to have multiple PK takers if possible. It makes that harder to predict. Problem is a lot of people suck at it. I know I did. I was too worked up every time and would put that sumamabitch 50 rows up 🤦‍♂️

You need to have a very calm mentality at the moment.

Minnesota United nets Finland midfielder Robin Lod after ‘long chase’

Robin Lod serves as an example of a player acquisition that was years in the making, and Minnesota United has been rewarded for its persistence.

The Loons made official the signing of the 26-year-old Finnish midfielder on Tuesday. Minnesota will use the higher-level MLS budget fund Targeted Allocation Money to bring him in on a multi-year deal.

Financial terms of Lod’s contract were not released, but his salary and transfer fee must be more than $530,000 and less $1.53 million a year, per MLS rules. Lod’s salary won’t be public until the MLS players’ union releases figures later this year.

The Loons pursued Lod for more than 18 months dating back to when he played for Panathinaikos in the Greece’s top league and stayed on him after he moved to Sporting Gijon in Spain’s second level last season.

“That is one thing that I think convinced him in the end is the fact that we wouldn’t go away,” United coach Adrian Heath said with a laugh Tuesday. “He’s probably done it to shut us up, stop ringing him up and trying to get him over here. It’s been a long chase, but we are glad that it’s finally over.”

Lod has made 33 appearances for the Finland national team and has played there with current Loons midfielder Rasmus Schuller. Their connection gave the Loons another opportunity to sell Lod on Minnesota.

“I kept probing Ras to go at him,” Heath said.

Lod said the decision to come to Minnesota now was based on the success of the club and the growth of MLS.

“I think they are doing really well,” Lod said after his first training session Tuesday. “I think the MLS and this club is improving really fast, so I’m really happy to be here for this project.”

Lod partnered with Schuller in a soccer-tennis drill Tuesday and shared how their Finnish connection played a role in him coming to Minnesota.

“It helps that there is a familiar face who can tell good things about the club,” Lod said.

Now United will have to be patient a little bit longer. Lod plans to return to Finland in order to complete his immigration paperwork and visa and be present for his wife giving birth to their child.

The club has targeted its U.S. Open Cup semifinal against Portland Timbers on Aug. 7 as a potential debut date for Lod.

“Technically outstanding, combination play, pace,” Heath said about Lod’s qualities. “Two really good feet. Can play both sides. Can play underneath, play through the middle, so I just think he will be a really big piece for us moving forward this year.”

United primarily has played Kevin Molino, Miguel Ibarra and Ethan Finlay as wingers in Heath’s preferred 4-2-3-1 formation this season. Lod is expected to vie for a spot there.

On July 8, Heath said there was one acquisition the club expected to announce “in a couple of days, then one of them is probably not as far along as we would have liked.”

On Tuesday, Heath doused cold water on that vague other target. (The Loons also have been in the market for a left back.)

“The one that we were trying to get over the line a couple of weeks ago is dead now,” he said. “But we have had other alternatives, other options, and we are pursuing them quite vigorously at the moment because every day is important now because obviously the window is open but we’ve still got a lot of stuff to do, paperwork, visas, etc. The sooner we can get a player signed, the sooner he can be available for selection.”

The summer transfer window closes Aug. 7, and the regular season finishes three weeks earlier this season, with finales on Oct. 6.

I had to pass up on an opportunity to see Liverpool take on Dortmund at Notre Dame stadium last night because my youngest was playing a little league tournament game. Stupid little league!

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (7/20/2019 12:06:49 PM)

I don't know man, you probably didn't miss much. The preseason money grab matches are usually all young guys we've never heard of. I haven't seen the lineups but I'd be shocked if there were any big guns playing.

joejitsu -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (8/1/2019 7:44:07 PM)

Pepe is a Gunner! That should help, but defense and transition could still be an issue.

Our attack will be insane and I'm not so worried about the transition from the back line to the forwards (not that it'll be great but….). Defense will define top 4 or not. We still are counting on that walking "SOS" Mustafi and Kos really stabbed us in the back.

We can 'maybe' get by with who we have, given we should score a lot more goals, but if there is an injury or 2 on the backline we are doomed. It's scary for sure. Emery is nuckingfutz if he goes in to the season with that back 4.

Hopefully, there is someone who is currently being looked at by the brain trust who can solidify the back end. It's hard to track all of the transfers on the European news sites because they change so quickly. Kind of like the first day of free agency in the NFL, but for weeks!

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (8/3/2019 9:57:53 AM)

My guess is it'll be a deadline day signing of Tierney. It looks like we are preparing our 3rd bid for him at around 25 million and he's leaking that he's 'dying to join us'. I'll give Celtic credit. They've held steadfast on this deal.

IF he is healthy, he would be a great defender for us. He's not very big, but he's solid in front of the goalkeeper.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (8/3/2019 4:52:03 PM)

Yeap. Nacho is getting old and Bellerin will start on the bench. We are very thin with wide defenders. I don't get the loan whispers about Coutihno. He makes zero sense unless we somehow unload Miki or Ozil.

UGGGHHH. Hearing bad things about my prediction and our D overall. Window closes soon and, apparently, Tierney showed up for training and couldn't hit the ball with any authority. He had surgery on his groin this year and it's still bad. 8 weeks out, minimum. We may try to push for a January window signing for him but looks like we may have to roll with a Nacho/Kolo combo for now. Makes it even more important to shore up the central defense.

Well, I just watched some video of the match today and it looks like the defense is going to be problematic. Ainsley made an own goal in the dumbest way possible, and Mustafi looks clueless at cb. We better spend some dough and get some quality defense help soon, or the top 4 finish could be impossible.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (8/5/2019 10:38:14 AM)

Mustafi is to Arsenal what Marek Zidlickly is to the Wild. That's more 'soccer training' for Sweens and SMF since they are still reletively new to the game [;)]

I don't blame AMN's too much for that own goal. Leno didn't really take command of that situation like he is supposed to. Plus, IMO, Emery is playing that young kid out of his natural position. He's not a RB but we are waiting on Bellerin to get healthy with a bandaid instead of signing a real replacement. It all sucks but I feel bad for AMN.

The game winner was a complete "Aresenal" way of doing things. Mustafi has no clue on positioning and we paired him with Chambers. I could have scored that goal as I sit here typing.

joejitsu -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (8/6/2019 8:59:45 PM)

Rugani? He supposedly agreed to terms with the Gunners, but juve has not said that it's a done deal. He's an upgrade for us, but only if he actually shows up. I still like a healthy Tierney over Rugani, though.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (8/6/2019 9:51:01 PM)

Agree on KT over Rug.

It's a 'change of scenery' move for him if it becomes true. He was a stud in 2015-2016, when healthy, and struggled recently (according to my Juve friends. Which is funny, when you win the title every year you have to find someone to bitch about). What I hate about the reported deal is it's a 2 year loan with a mandatory buy for 40 mill in 2 years.

If that's the case, what Juve are saying is "if he returns to form we'll back out of the loan next year, leaving you with nothing. Thanks for rejuvenating his career! If he is truly done, and crap at this point, he's yours for 40 mil. Thanks for taking him off our books!!"

It's really a lose/lose situation for us outside of a possible 1 year investment. But, I type all of that without knowing much about him with my own eyes. I don't watch Italain Serie A.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (8/7/2019 6:31:41 PM)

My prediction is coming true. Tierney coming for 25 mill and thankfully that’ll kill the Luis rumors that have given me heartburn. That would have been another “Farve “ moment for me.

Tierney AND Luiz are in the fold. This went better than I thought it would go. Use Luiz until Tierney is ready, then platoon them when we need to. I’m pretty cocky about the moves today.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (8/7/2019 7:37:47 PM)

Ughhh man. No way for me on DL. He’s a disaster and has had problems every where he’s been.

joejitsu -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (8/7/2019 7:51:16 PM)

I’m not a huge fan of Sideshow Bob either. But, he is an upgrade from what we have right now. And, when Tierney gets into game shape, we’ll be much better on defense. I’m hoping that Unai is comfortable with this roster and knows how to get the most out of them.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (8/7/2019 9:01:00 PM)

You and I at CB's would be better than we have [:D]

El Duderino -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (8/7/2019 10:16:06 PM)

M!
N!
U! F! C!

TJSweens -> RE: Soccer Made in Minnesota (8/8/2019 8:41:15 AM)

Yeah, take that Arsenal crap to the European soccer thread.

As Duder was alluding to, the Loons have advanced to the U.S. Open Cup Championship game. Mason Toye continues to look like the emerging star. The kid looks like he has figured out at this level.

They also shelled out their biggest transfer fee ever to add 18 year old designated player Thomas Chacon of Uruguay. He is a midfielder and has played the last 2 years for Uruguay's first division. He is also on the 20U national team.

This is after signing attacking midfielder Robin Lod from the Finnish national team and the Greek super league and left fullback Wilfried Moimbe from France’s Ligue 2.
