At this stage the only thing that can hold this team back is Zimmer himself.

This defense is more suited as an aggressor than laying back in the weeds which seems to be what Zim is made of.

At least Kubiak/Stef told Zim to F off and are attacking. Zim needs to get on board with this mantra defensively.

??

The Vikings are built to not have to blitz---Rhodes and Waynes man to man and attacking DE's. If Rhodes and Waynes can't cover you can't mix in blitzes. On top of that the Lions used 2-3 TEs to help block. I remember the sack Hunter got he was double teamed by two TE.

I think we blitzed a fair amount. DET picked them up pretty well for the most part.

Zim has always blitzed. I think it was the Eagles DC who called Zimmer "the Godfather of the double A gap blitz". With that said, Zim has also always emphasized getting pressure without having to blitz. The idea is blitz when he wants to blitz and not because he has to blitz.

You are reading it wrong....yes they blitz but not every down and the defense is built to pressure w/o blitzing.

I'm not reading anything wrong. I'm agreeing with you in the bolded part.

10 plays, 75 yards, 2:35

This one brought the score to 35-30 in the fourth quarter. Unacceptable. For all of Zimmer's positives this drive is the perfect example of Zimmer's biggest weakness. He freezes up in the biggest moments. 3rd and 17 and he rushes 3 and sits everyone else back in a prevent-style zone. It brought back memories of the Saints 3rd-and-long in the playoffs in 2017. He doesn't learn from his past.

I mean seriously - 10 playes, 75 yards, 2:25?!?!?!

Agree. Also, giving up that TD with 6 sec to go before halftime didn't help either.

I believe that drive was aided by a roughing the passer call on Barr. not Zim's fault here but he gets to passive way to often on his schemes.

That touchdown was more the opposite problem. 3rd down. 6 seconds left and no timeouts from the 10-yard line and Mike Hues gets beat off aggressive press coverage. It was going to be the last play of the half (before a FG attempt) and Stafford is not going to pass it short of the end zone and risk getting nothing. Playing aggressive press coverage is what gave them the TD. That is a situation where you are much better off protecting the end zone because you know Stafford won't throw it short and risk getting nothing.

It would be SO much better if the opposition would quit trying to win when they are playing us, the way we are playing you would think that other teams have access to quality NFL players, coaching staffs, money to pay those players so we can't sign them on the cheap etc. In short you would think that there was a level playing field where the Vikings don't have all the advantages.

In the ebb and flow of the NFL from season to season there are times when the team we root for will have decidedly better talent than most of the opposition. This is one of those times. During these times it's imperative that the least amount of mistakes reasonably made are made. In this website we discus the team we root for and talk about what happened in the game and what could be improved. You sir, who I've always admired and still do, are starting to become a troll. Is there anything I can do to help?

Point being, shit happens, the day after we put the worst loss of the season on a team in their house, all we read about is panicked discussion about a defense (that has been consistently top 5-10 in the league under Zimmer for the better part of a decade now) that played badly in ONE STINKING GAME, I would say the trolls are the folks who continuously harp about how shitty and overmatched our coaching staff still is Zimmer in particular (you know the Zimmer with the .603 winning % 5th among active coaches with 30 or more wins). Three weeks ago it was also Rick Spielman should be fired because, well I guess because he doesn't provide a talented roster, Cousins signing, who knows why. 3 weeks later we've got the best roster in the league, our coaching staff is holding us back. The incessant whining on these boards is hard to take, clearly there is a significant presence on these boards that revel in it.

Zero titles. Zero Super Bowl appearances. One miracle win in the playoffs. Eventually we have to play the best of the NFL in the playoffs. All the little details matter.

Regular season wins are good enough for some people - even if they don't lead to the playoffs.

We have 2 playoff appearances and 1 playoff win in 5 years.

Brad Childress had 2 playoff appearances and 1 playoff win in 4 years.

The young whiz kids have mixed results. Stefanski/Kubiak >>> McVay, Taylor, Shanahan

Get Hill and Hughes up to speed and find a 3rd quality pass rusher and there is no reason to believe we can't go deep in playoffs. Need home field advantage though and that could be tough.

The announcer had basically the same assessment. Hughes should have pressed inside and forced the receiver to take the outside route. Once Johnson got the inside position, it was an easy dot to dot throw.

If you rewatch the Diggs supposed drop in the end zone---he almost quit on his route and then tried to catch up again.

The defender also grabbed (or hacked on) one of Diggs arms which IMO didn't allow Diggs to get his arms up (or at least that arm) in coordination otherwise Diggs most likely makes that catch. That said, I think that is a catch Thielen still makes given the exact same PI circumstances.

It looked to me like he was trying to deceive the DB with late hands/changed gears rather than "quitting" on the route and then "unquitting." Diggs is not some horrible person with a bad attitude; people act like he's a cross between Antonio Brown and Roberto Duran.

#Vikings allowed 10 pressures on 36 dropbacks per PFF. Elflein had 4, everyone else had 1 or 0. That’s about as clean as she gets.

(Luke Braun on Twitter)

Best overall OL performance I can remember for years. Bradbury was good, Reiff was good, Kirk had a clean pocket. Smith and Rudy both had plays with two big blocks on the same drive. It will be interesting to see the improvement tested against better defenses, but I think there's no doubt that they're getting better.

3rd and goal from the 10, 6 seconds left in the half. Is there some kind of unwritten gentleman's agreement that the defense won't just tackle all the receivers at the LOS, forcing an incompletion, forcing an additional play where the offense would only have time for one more play, either a FG attempt, or trying one last play for a TD, risking getting 0 points?

I suppose if you are going to play press coverage, then yes force him outside. Better yet tackle him and give up a PI at 8 if he starts to get by you. It was about the six seconds, not the 3rd down.

The announcer had basically the same assessment. Hughes should have pressed inside and forced the receiver to take the outside route. Once Johnson got the inside position, it was an easy dot to dot throw.

The risk is a missed tackle I guess, leaving a receiver unguarded. But I just typed a less aggressive version of the same thing, then saw your post.

That's why you have 9 guys back. Everyone is virtually double covered and the QB will just throw it away.

Diggs is a good guy. Went with Thielen to injury tent. Throws and catches passes to/from kids before game. He is an emotional guy.....just has to keep them more in check at times.

Anyone else worried that DET DBack was going to tomahawk ball out of his hands on last big play? Nice to see that he felt the guy coming and covered up with two hands.
