He's been a total stud.

I do get a little nervous when people talk about him moving to LT though.

Seemed like he and Hill seemed to worked well together. As others noted Hill seems more comfortable on the other side.

One more. Sorry, but it's interesting to me and I'm betting for all of you too.

They game planned to help Bradbury. I should add, to also take advantage of his strengths.

The positive posts, IMO, come down to one thing. The Oline gave Cousins time. When they don't our offense sucks. When they do we look formidable. It's not rocket surgery to me.

I think it's a little more than that. Cousins is more decisive these last 2 games. He was holding the ball way too long in the Bears game in particular.

It's a little bit of a sloter syndrome if you ask me. Needs some easy throws early to get him in a rythm, like MOST NFL Qbs. Today - even the 4 yd pass to Diggs was a good start.

Good point. If it starts out as jailbreak city then there is trouble.

That's the thing about Cousins, he is mechanical. With tentative squeaky-wheel Cousins on the other end of the spectrum from swiss clock Cousins.

A few early mistakes and the gears seize up – which seems to bother him more than getting smacked around. Perfectionism seems to be the problem, not so much about toughness. Playing very well after the Eagles near comeback was good to see.

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/14/2019 2:15:52 PM)

Reportedly Griffen, Hendricks, Barr,, Hunter, Smith and probably others are having great seasons. My question is how come the defense is not dominating? I know Rhodes is struggling and none of our D-tackles are standing out. I see we are fifth in the league for yards and points given up per game.

That seems to be pretty good doesn't it? Especially considering "Rhodes is struggling and none of our D-tackles are standing out."

Define "great".

Kendricks 15th in tackles
Griffen in a 17-way tie for sacks (ranked 31-48)
Smith 22nd just among DBs for tackles
Hunter tied for 4th in sacks.

I'll say the question is the reverse of yours: how is it we have a top 5 defense when nobody outside of Hunter is playing "great"?

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/14/2019 2:32:27 PM)

Also the Harris and Alexander types are large contributors to the top 5 D.

Trekgeekscott -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/14/2019 3:46:03 PM)

MY take on the game. I was ecstatic at the play early. And got REALLY frustrated with the putting on the brakes and going into a hole mentality now that we're up by 21. It wasn't until they got their heads out of their ass and got agressive again that we put the Eagles away. Until then they thought they could come back and win. Then we slapped em hard.

I found it odd that after each TD pass to Diggs, Cousins went to the sideline and didn't go the endzone with them to celebrate...granted it was pretty far down field on a couple of them but still.

Kyle Rudolph, I am not one of the haters, but you are not earning your contract right now.

Irv Smith looks like he will be a nice little toy for our OC for years to come.

Mattison is better than people give him credit for. Cook is amazing when healthy, but Mattison wouldn't be much of dropoff if Cook gets hurt again.

Love the deep shots. Love the agressive attacking.

Seriously, the big problem I had with this game was going into a coccoon when up by 21 and letting the Eagles just march down the field and cut the deficit to 4.

It is getting quite annoying how Zimmer does that frequently. Zim. Look at the best team in the NFL for the past two decades...the never take their foot off the gas. Ever. They stay aggressive and they've won 6 titles, they are in the Conference championship game every year. they've been to 9 SBs. The WIN and WIN and WIN...they don't play nice. They keep attacking. I would suggest Zim, that you don't go all conservative until up by at least 35.

Just finished watching the game on the Skillout web site. Great to see the ball moving downfield and the play calling was excellent. Cousins was more decisive with the ball and that matters.

Hill had to come in a couple of times and did a good job.

Elf had his obligatory whiff, resulting in a sack. But he did play better today, so that's a start.

Dozier is better than Elf.

Oneal is playing very good right now. Loved his aggression today!

Bradbury had a good game too, might be his best of the year.

Reiff had a couple of plays I'm sure he'd like back, but did play pretty good when available.

The offense still ran the ball more than passed and were effective in keeping the Eagles off balance. The running attack was good enough to make them respect it and it was thought be many of the experts that we wouldn't be able to run, looks like our run game is legitimate.

Still worry about Diggs mindset. On his first TD he mocks taking off his helmet, not sure why he has to make those statements. His taking off the helmet cost us an extra point, it matters, don't have to act like an ass about it. AT knows how to celebrate a TD, slam the ball in to the ground and go find the teammates that made it possible.

Right now we average giving up 15.5 points a game, keep that up and we are going to be tough to beat.

When Cousins is on, he is really something to watch. The 51 yard TD to Diggs was perfect and the first TD to Adam was even better, just dropped right in there perfectly. This should help his confidence grow, he played a really solid game all around.

As mentioned in here already, the coaching staff had their shit together today. The game plan was spot on, on both sides of the ball, that is nice to see. Great job by everyone, now on to Detroit, a place we do have some success to reflect on.

Thanks Dana, I always love to read your take on the games.

On a related note (If you are not tired of twitter links), I wish this guy were a Vikings fan. He does some of the best film analysis online that I've seen, but, alas, it's for the Eagles fan base. This clip is his explanation of the fake FB choice shortly before half time. I heard the report of the Eagles HC's statement that if they saw the same thing again, he'd make the same decision and I wondered what it was that the coaches in the press box saw. Here's Fran Duffy's explanation:

Our defense was number one or two a couple of years ago and we have all of the players back. On top of that, a number of players are having their "best season ever". You know it's still the first half of the season and it's possible the Vikings defense will move up in the rankings. My thinking going into the season that the Vikings have a chance to be Super based on the defense. I don't think fifth best is good enough. I bet that Zimmer thinks that way, too. It is worth pointing out that the Vikings are third in rushing and number 12 in total yards. If a team is number three in rushing, that should help the defense's numbers. (ie. control the clock) I suppose that teams that build big leads early are going to give up more yards per game on defense, just because they are going to be more conservative. Our team seems to do that at home.

Vikings offense is the most explosive. It wasn't that way a year ago. Here's information.

How many of them are really having their "best season ever" though?

2018:
4th in yards
9th in points

2017:
1st in yards
1st in points

2016:
3rd in yards
6th in points

2015:
13th in yards
5th in points

2014:
14th in yards
11th in points

2017 was probably a little bit of an outlier. Partially fueled by a record setting defense on 3rd downs.

It feels like having the 5th ranked defense isn't so much of a problem to me.

We're about 2.5 PPG away from #2. No one is even close to the Patriots who have given up a ridiculous total of 48 points in 6 games.

There must be a minimum snaps played qualifier as it appears to me that Kendricks is currently ranked #3. Eric Wilson is ranked #15 or #10 if I pull out players with two or less games played.

Did Zimmer really say something to that effect? I would have thought him to be someone that would frown at PFF and say phooey. Personally I'm a big believer in the rankings.

David F. -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/14/2019 6:42:43 PM)

For safeties Anthony Harris is ranked #1 and Harrison Smith #9.
