Bradbury holding up one on one vs. Fletcher Cox on this successful third down play. Our shiny new center really starting to figure things out.

Biggest surprise: Alexander Mattison
Biggest disappointment: Pat Elflein

(Ali Siddiqui on Twitter)

Do you agree. I kind of expected both. I also expected a lot from Cook. The player that surprised me the most so far this season is Everson Griffen. He is having arguably is best season. He doesn't always show up in the stat sheet with the pressures. Sometimes a pressure is just as good as a pass defended by a CB. I'm also surprised by Dan Bailey. He's doing really well. I'm disappointed in Rhodes, but I kind of saw it happening. I was disappointed in Diggs and his antics. I was disappointed in the performance of Cousins in Chicago. I was disappointed in Bradbury's start, but again he seems to be turning things around. Elflein might be the best answer as he seems to be consistently underperforming. He played poorly last year, but he had some excuses. Not so much this year.

The Vikings got several favorable calls by the refs and against the Eagles. It felt we got some home cooking benefits with the PI calls.

What do you think of this catch? I think it was a catch, but it was really debatable.

Really good view of an offensive line playing in sync. Every one of them has a great set and the footwork of Hill and O'Neil is perfect. Hill really filled in admirably when called on this weekend, he went in a couple of times to spell Reiff, not sure what happened to Reiff, but he got dinged up early, like the third play from scrimmage, so Hill played a bunch.

Elf also blocks very well on this clip. I wanted to point that out, because after watching the game, I thought Elf might have had his best performance in a couple of years, so that's a good thing. He still made mistakes, every Oline guy will, it's just the nature of the beast, but he played better on a number of reps and that's good. It might be just a coincidence, but Bradbury also had a solid game, so this may just be these guys figuring it out in real time. It's one thing to do it in practice, but completely another to do it in live action. Looking better, gotta like that.

That's an interesting clip, I watched it several times when I watched the game on Skillout. The one thing I will say is that he doesn't loose any control of the ball when it touches the ground, perhaps that's why it wasn't questioned. I think this is the play where the announcers mention that the Eagles couldn't challenge it because they were out of time outs. Not sure.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/14/2019 8:17:40 PM)

It's not just the offense getting better – because the defense has been together so long, we expect them to take right off.

It seems to me though, the defense has been called and played more aggressively the last 2 games.

More aggressive means more splash plays but I think you lose some bigger chunks as well ... which skews stats a bit. The key is to set-up the defense to come with something effective on key plays. Which is Zimmer's forte, when he's not playing conservatively with a lead.

On top of that, the defense should get much better if the offense continues to improve.

beo -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/14/2019 8:21:48 PM)

The defense seems solid across the board... no real weak links.

But no superstars either.

I think back in 2017 there were times when Rhodes was shut down and times when Griffin/Hunter were dominating.

Haven't seen that yet this year.

I heard on a podcast that Rhodes has been limping pretty heavily after games... hoping he or Hill or Hughes can become that shutdown guy to get this defense to elite status.

I like the way Cousins easily rolls away from ex-Eagles LB Zach Brown on the play.

Hill coming back in two weeks too. That's a wicked secondary.

Griffith and Hunter are wicked.

Barr and Kendricks seem to be ramping up (maybe that has been Zimmer's focus the last two weeks).

I think we are very good all-around but merely solid / not quite soft up the middle ... Joseph and Stephen are not playing quite as stout as I was hoping for.

Eagles linebacker Zach Brown, who badmouthed Cousins before facing the Vikings last week, is being released, according to Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Credit Cousins for sure. It also helped that Oneil and the rest of the line stoned their guys so he had a good lane to escape.

I didn't watch much of the game but man the internet is blowing up about the officiating screwing the Lions and gifting the game to the Packers (no shocker there).

The NFL has now jumped the shark and become the WWE of football...

Fitting the WWE is starting a league!

Maybe they should just merge now and call it the XNFL and start practicing all the scripted play and coregraphed hitting...

Reportedly Griffen, Hendricks, Barr,, Hunter, Smith and probably others are having great seasons. My question is how come the defense is not dominating? I know Rhodes is struggling and none of our D-tackles are standing out. I see we are fifth in the league for yards and points given up per game.

Define "great".

Kendricks 15th in tackles
Griffen in a 17-way tie for sacks (ranked 31-48)
Smith 22nd just among DBs for tackles
Hunter tied for 4th in sacks.

I'll say the question is the reverse of yours: how is it we have a top 5 defense when nobody outside of Hunter is playing "great"?

Adam Patrick@Str8_Cash_Homey
Mike Zimmer is pumped that Eric Kendricks is PFF's No. 2 LB in the entire #NFL this season!

There must be a minimum snaps played qualifier as it appears to me that Kendricks is currently ranked #3. Eric Wilson is ranked #15 or #10 if I pull out players with two or less games played.

Did Zimmer really say something to that effect? I would have thought him to be someone that would frown at PFF and say phooey. Personally I'm a big believer in the rankings.

Just finished watching the game on the Skillout web site. Great to see the ball moving downfield and the play calling was excellent. Cousins was more decisive with the ball and that matters.

Hill had to come in a couple of times and did a good job.

Elf had his obligatory whiff, resulting in a sack. But he did play better today, so that's a start.

Dozier is better than Elf.

Oneal is playing very good right now. Loved his aggression today!

Bradbury had a good game too, might be his best of the year.

Reiff had a couple of plays I'm sure he'd like back, but did play pretty good when available.

The offense still ran the ball more than passed and were effective in keeping the Eagles off balance. The running attack was good enough to make them respect it and it was thought be many of the experts that we wouldn't be able to run, looks like our run game is legitimate.

Still worry about Diggs mindset. On his first TD he mocks taking off his helmet, not sure why he has to make those statements. His taking off the helmet cost us an extra point, it matters, don't have to act like an ass about it. AT knows how to celebrate a TD, slam the ball in to the ground and go find the teammates that made it possible.

Right now we average giving up 15.5 points a game, keep that up and we are going to be tough to beat.

When Cousins is on, he is really something to watch. The 51 yard TD to Diggs was perfect and the first TD to Adam was even better, just dropped right in there perfectly. This should help his confidence grow, he played a really solid game all around.

As mentioned in here already, the coaching staff had their shit together today. The game plan was spot on, on both sides of the ball, that is nice to see. Great job by everyone, now on to Detroit, a place we do have some success to reflect on.

Thanks Dana, I always love to read your take on the games.

On a related note (If you are not tired of twitter links), I wish this guy were a Vikings fan. He does some of the best film analysis online that I've seen, but, alas, it's for the Eagles fan base. This clip is his explanation of the fake FB choice shortly before half time. I heard the report of the Eagles HC's statement that if they saw the same thing again, he'd make the same decision and I wondered what it was that the coaches in the press box saw. Here's Fran Duffy's explanation:

https://twitter.com/fduffy3/status/1183834823456108544?s=20

Hi Terry, always good to see that you are still paying attention to the board and to have your commenting again would be even better.

So I watched the video, it's interesting to see the movement that takes place during a FG try or extra point attempt. Really glad to see that the players were committed to their reads and as soon as they saw their keys they were running to their respective spots. Harris does a great job of hustling to the flat area where the kicker only has one option. The play should have worked, but the kicker hesitates and the Vikings react so quickly that the moment of hesitation was all that was needed, a really great play by the special teams for sure.

I am hoping that what we have seen from the team the past couple of weeks is a glimpse of things to come. The offensive line is starting to gel and the running game is enough of a threat to keep teams on their heels, slow down the rush a bit. There are still mistakes being made, but less of them, so they are learning and adjusting. I'm going to be leery of Cousins until he proves he's turned the corner and learned to control his game. I have believed his problem is more in his head than anything, he tends to think too much when frustrated. I feel the coaching staff has recognized this a bit and are putting him in a better position to succeed, and we are seeing good results of this.

Our young OC has a lot of NFL experience, but he's also gone up against a few pretty experienced defensive coordinators, and he's learning as he goes too. Practice is a good place for installations and dress rehearsals, but going against real defenses with the bullets flying is the best way to learn. I think he's really starting to understand how defenses are going to defend him and what to do to counter it. This weeks game plan and adjustments was really solid.

He's been a total stud.

I do get a little nervous when people talk about him moving to LT though.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to remember Hill starting off as playing LT after we acquired him from Jacksonville. He seemed to be a pretty good pickup at the time.

Then he got moved to RT, and has been bad.

But after seeing him play pretty decent replacing Reif when he was injured, has me thinking that the Vikings may be playing him out of his natural position.

It wouldn't be the first time they've screwed up an OLineman moving them around to different spots where they're not as effective.

SoMnFan -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/15/2019 8:07:31 AM)

10. Minnesota Vikings (4-2)
Week 6 ranking: 14
Biggest weakness: Tight end play
Many expected a tight end to assume the role of WR3 in the Vikings' offense given Gary Kubiak's history with the position. However, in Minnesota's first six games, Kyle Rudolph and Irv Smith Jr. have a combined 16 catches for 165 yards and no touchdowns while Tyler Conklin has yet to be targeted. The Vikings rank 27th in receiving yards, 26th in receptions and are one of three teams without a receiving TD by a tight end. The Vikings paid a pretty penny to bring back Rudolph this offseason and used a high draft pick on Smith but haven't utilized this position group all that much beyond run-blocking. -- Courtney Cronin

Per Paul Allen:

Danielle Hunter, ~3000 snaps for career, only 1 neutral zone infraction, 5 total penalties
Eric Kendricks, >4000 snaps for career, only 4 total penalties

Pretty amazing stats.

Thoughts from the game last night:

The Puke are a decent team and can hang with anyone. But any talk of them being the "best in the NFL" is waaay over the top.

The refs JOBBED the Lions last night. Two horrible hands to the face calls (one would have led to a 4th and forever to go) and missed blatant PI.

DET finished +3 in turnovers and lost. There is like a 1% chance of that happening.

Too many FGs. Gotta finish those drives Lions. You are playing the 12th man, too.

The DET DL did very little. They were OK against the run, but got no rush on Rodgers.

Meh.....
