According to Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press, Pierce cited his asthma and a recent bout with pneumonia as reasons for opting out of the 2020 season. Pierce had signed a three-year, $27 million contract this offseason after playing the first four years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens.

quote:

NFL Rule: To be designated a voluntary opt-out, a player must be under contract or subject to a tender. The player’s contract will toll and all provisions of that contract for the tolled year will be applicable the following season; however, he will not receive an accrued season. The player will be eligible for a stipend of $150,000 to be treated as a salary advance against his tolled contract; an undrafted free agent, however, is not eligible for the stipend.

The opt outs are irrevocable, so now that Pierce has declared that he is opting out of the season, he is not eligible to come back at all this year. From a contract standpoint, Pierce’s contract appears to now start with the 2021 season, meaning that he will be signed with the Vikings through the 2023 season.

According to that list of opt-outs, Pierce is a "higher-risk opt-out".

A higher-risk opt-out will receive an accrued season toward free agency and all benefits and minimum salary credit for a credited season and is also eligible for a stipend of $350,000, which will not constitute a salary advance.

Basically he can get the stipend this year, but he's past the point that accruing seasons matter.

We'll still have him at the contract he signed for the following 3 seasons.

More bad news for us.

Michael Pierce just told me he is opting out. His asthma is a reason.

(Chris Tomasson on Twitter)

OMG that is one we can't afford. Wow. My projection just went from 10-6 to 8-8.

It definitely sucks, but we lose two more games just because of this? I think that's a bit of a stretch. Let's not panic!

Is Snacks Harrison still available? He's not as good as Pierce, but he can eat up some space in the middle.

Here are some guys who are available:

VS the replacements we have available at this time I see him as making a 2 game difference. He had to opt out IMO. Asthma and pneumonia history with a respiratory disease is not a good match.

It is official

Dalvin Cook reports to Training Camp on time
8 NEW, 8
And that’s the end of that

NFL: NFC Wild Card-Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints
Chuck Cook -USA TODAY Sports
Ladies and gentlemen, our short, regional nightmare is over.

When the Minnesota Vikings’ veterans reported to camp on Tuesday, running back Dalvin Cook was with them, ending the speculation that he would hold out. He had said earlier this offseason that Cook would not participate in any team activities until he received a “reasonable” contract extension offer.

This also brings an end to the game of “telephone” that happened over this past weekend, where Cook’s agent and Mike Zimmer went back and forth about whether or not the head coach had spoken with Cook about his intention of reporting to camp.

Cook is in the final year of his four-year rookie contract, and with the new rules that the NFL has put forth concerning COVID-19 Cook now only has to play in one game to pick up an accrued season to allow him to hit unrestricted free agency before the 2021 season if the Vikings do not sign him to an extension before then.

Hopefully the Vikings and Cook can work something out, whether it’s during the preseason or the actual season itself. For now, however, the star running back is officially in the fold and will not be holding out.

So we have that going for us. Which is nice.

kgdabom -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/28/2020 2:51:07 PM)

Problem is this report reiterates that all Dalvin has to do is play one game to accrue a season and next year he can be a free agent. By reporting today and playing the first game leverage will shift from the Vikings to Cook.

looking at spotrac; pierce's cap hit this year was designed to be $5m - we are now having to pick up only the prorated signing bonus part which is $2m...the contract is pushed off one season, but the final year does not have a signing bonus added into the cap number any longer because we're being charged for it this season....

i'm not implying that i can reconcile this with the language of the cba, or that i understand it, but this is what spotrac is indicating....

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/28/2020 4:17:03 PM)

Unless we pick up a free agent nose tackle, the way I see it, Johnson should start and Stephen should backup him at that position. Watts makes the most sense to start at 3 tech. On passing downs, Odenigbo can move inside next to Watts with Barr and Hunter rushing the passer from the outside. That's what I would do, but you know I always like to see rotations along the defensive line.

imo there is nobody here, or on twitter at this moment, that seems to understand the pandemic cba and how it affects cook's position with the team....

if what you are stating is true, then i think we should expect cook to hold out after the first game of the season....

I agree NT would be Jaleel and Stephen. 3T will be Watts, Stephen and some combination of the youngsters.

The run game was not great last year, declined significantly from 2018. Destroyed us in the Niners game. How much of it was the play of NT and how much of it was 3T? He had joseph under contract for about what we are paying Pierce but we thought adding Pierce was an upgrade?

IDK.

the one positive out of this is that we can shake out our dt's and see what the younger players can bring...next season we'll know who the players are - and we'll have pierce...hopefully....

I just can't see getting too much from rookies with such an abbreviated off-season. No preseason games now. Sigh.

For what it's worth, when I was in the ventilator I had a clear dream that the Vikings began the season with three victories.

More bad news. Sigh again.

1st round pick, WR Justin Jefferson tested positive for Covid today. He will be out 10-14 days in critical practice time for the Vikings. Sad to see it, so Chad Beebe better be ready. Someone has to step into the #2 slot.

Guess all the talk of it being a false negative were BS...

That one sucks.

--edit--

We need to pump our breaks on this one. Whoever "Vikefans" is, he needs to be much more careful in his tweets.

Jefferson was added to the COVID-19 Reserve list. That does not automatically mean he tested positive:

The COVID-19 reserve list is for players who tested positive or were in close contact with a carrier of the virus. The league does not allow teams to disclose whether players are in the first or second of those two groups.

The Superbowl is in Tampa this year? The NFL should build an extra week or two into the back end of the season in case COVID forces some postponement of games. They could be pushed back to the end of the season or cancelled (if the game has zero impact on playoffs).

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/28/2020 11:27:54 PM)

#Vikings rookie CB Nevelle Clarke went on active/non-football injury list He said he tweaked his hamstring way back in a practice a week before opener w/Central Florida. Expects to be fine & ready for 1st practice. "“This is from last year They’re just trying to keep it in check"

Hunter's going to want a new contract.

JOEY BOSA
DL, LOS ANGELES CHARGERS

Chargers signed Joey Bosa to a five-year, $135 million contract extension.
The deal includes $102 million guaranteed, the new NFL record among defensive players. Since coming into the league as the third pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, Bosa has done nothing but live up to lofty expectations. He's averaged 10.0 sacks per season through his first years despite missing 20% of his possible regular-season games due to injury. When Bosa is fully healthy, there are maybe four pass-rushers better, so it's no surprise to see the Chargers hand him the keys to the franchise. Per PFF, Bosa has the highest pass-rush grade and pass-rush win rate over the last three seasons.

He's better than Joey Bosa.

does anyone know what the final roster size is?...is it larger than 53?....

‘...owners will increase the size of the practice squad from 10 players to 16. In addition, four players can be protected from other teams on a weekly basis.‘
