It looks like Seattle paid more than the Steelers did for Minkah. Minkah was heading into the second year of his rookie contract, right? Vs Adams heading into the 4th year?

Steelers gave 1st, 5th, and 6th. Got back 4th and 7th.

Seattle gave two 1sts, 3rd AND a player (safety McDougald - no idea how good he is). and got back 4th.

Plus a record setting contract? Seattle got fleeced. And I'm glad - look at the bears drafts since the Mack trade. Looks like Seattle gave up more than Chicago for Mack. And according to Zimmer - safety isn't that important compared to DE. Seattle had better be hitting on lower draft picks or they are in trouble.

Considering that Seattle has no guarantee of signing him, and if they do it will hit their cap hard , Seattle got taken behind the woodshed.

I heard on the radio that the way Seattle has been drafting (poorly) it was a good trade...lol (apparently draft pundits didn't like the 2020 draft).

Pager -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/28/2020 11:32:43 AM)

It's really hard for me to fault Spielman's approach to the draft. I think he takes the draft a little too far in gathering 5-7th picks. Would rather see more in the 2-4 range. But Udoh, Watts, and Hinton look like promising prospects. If any turn into a plus starter those are massive wins. I think Udoh and Watts both have the potential.

I love what he did taking capital in 2019 and turning it into multiple picks in 2020.

Giving up multiple 1st rounders devastates your roster in a couple of years.

If Seattle is whiffing in the first trade back into the second and get multiple picks. I think that should be the approach always. You don't have a player you love, trade down - in any round.

More bad news for us.

Michael Pierce just told me he is opting out. His asthma is a reason.

But that's canceled out when we play the Bears:

Chicago Bears starting defensive lineman Eddie Goldman plans to opt out of the 2020 season due to health concerns related to COVID-19, sources confirmed to ESPN on Tuesday.

Presenting the COVID-19 Opt-Out Tracker: https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29533526/players-opting-2020-nfl-season-coronavirus-concerns-tracking-full-list

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/28/2020 11:55:38 AM)

According to Chris Tomasson of the Pioneer Press, Pierce cited his asthma and a recent bout with pneumonia as reasons for opting out of the 2020 season. Pierce had signed a three-year, $27 million contract this offseason after playing the first four years of his career with the Baltimore Ravens.

quote:

NFL Rule: To be designated a voluntary opt-out, a player must be under contract or subject to a tender. The player’s contract will toll and all provisions of that contract for the tolled year will be applicable the following season; however, he will not receive an accrued season. The player will be eligible for a stipend of $150,000 to be treated as a salary advance against his tolled contract; an undrafted free agent, however, is not eligible for the stipend.

The opt outs are irrevocable, so now that Pierce has declared that he is opting out of the season, he is not eligible to come back at all this year. From a contract standpoint, Pierce’s contract appears to now start with the 2021 season, meaning that he will be signed with the Vikings through the 2023 season.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/28/2020 11:57:44 AM)

In the long run, it might not be that big of a deal.

If the season ends up not completing, we'll still have him for the additional year.

The COVID-19 Opt-Out list is not to be confused with the COVID-19 Reserve List [sm=icon_sarcasm.gif]

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/28/2020 12:06:27 PM)

Do we get cap relief with the opt out by Pierce? Do you like the idea of Griffen being signed to be a third down 3 tech? It worked for us vs the Saints in the playoffs.

Yeah that could be a lot of cap relief. Get to work Rick.

MICHAEL PIERCE
DL, MINNESOTA VIKINGS

Vikings NT Michael Pierce has opted out of the 2020 season due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Pierce has a case of "really bad asthma." That entitles him to the $350,000 "high-risk stipend." Pierce was the only notable addition in free agency for a team that let Everson Griffen walk. Griffen does remain on the open market. Going on 28, Pierce's $3 million guaranteed will now toll to 2021. This is not the case with Pierce, but an unforeseen dynamic could be players opting out to hedge against losing their guaranteed money if COVID-19 eventually forces the cancellation of the season.

kgdabom -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/28/2020 12:14:29 PM)

High Risk Players like Pierce accrue a year of service time.

It is not mandatory for a "higher risk" player to opt out. A higher-risk opt-out will receive an accrued season toward free agency and all benefits and minimum salary credit for a credited season and is also eligible for a stipend of $350,000, which will not constitute a salary advance.

kgdabom -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/28/2020 12:17:50 PM)

Who replaces Pierce in our lineup?
Stephen who was flat out terrible last year. Jaleel Johnson, Watts? Is there an FA we can sign?
Do we bring back Griffen (I hope)?

I want to go on record that Pierce is making the correct decision considering his Asthma and Pneumonia history.
Pierce has had weight concerns in the past. I hope he can manage to get/keep himself in great shape during the year off.

Cook reporting today.

DALVIN COOK
RB, MINNESOTA VIKINGS

RB Dalvin Cook is expected to report to Vikings camp today amid ongoing contract talks with the team.
Cook would have faced a $50,000 fine for each day he didn't report to the team, per the league's new CBA. The running back's agent has repeatedly denied reports that Cook would report on time. Fantasy players taking Cook in the first round of best ball drafts can breathe a little easier today. It's a dark day for those who drafted Alexander Mattison in the middle rounds when reports of a possible Cook holdout first emerged.

Is Snacks Harrison still available? He's not as good as Pierce, but he can eat up some space in the middle.

Former Lions defensive tackle Damon "Snacks" Harrison says he didn't want to play in Detroit and was "hell-bent on getting out" of the Motor City.

The Lions traded for Harrison on Oct. 25, 2018, sending a fifth-round pick to the New York Giants.

"I was a bit angry," Harrison said of the trade during an appearance on the Green Light podcast, hosted by former NFL player Chris Long.

That season, Harrison was graded by Pro Football Focus as the No. 3 interior defender in the NFL, with the best run-stop percentage in the league (16%).

"To be completely honest with you, I didn't want to go to Detroit because of some things that I heard from some guys in the past and some guys who were there," Harrison said. "So when I got the call that that's where I was traded, I didn't answer the phone for a couple hours. [Lions general manager] Bob Quinn was calling me and I didn't pick up the phone because I was trying to figure out a way to get out of it."

After sitting out all of the spring workouts last year, Harrison, one of the top run-stoppers in the league, was placed on the non-football injury list before signing an extension, which converted much of his base salary into a $7.5 million signing bonus.

"I wasn't prepared for the season mentally," Harrison said.

"I came into camp in shape, but during the first three weeks of camp I think I kind of worked myself out of shape because I wasn't doing anything," Harrison said. "That was a time where, to be honest with you, we were trying to facilitate a trade. I was hell-bent on getting out of there."

By the end of the 2019 season, Harrison told reporters he was contemplating retirement after he played through a multitude of injuries and "wasn't able to ever get back to the form I'm used to."

Harrison, who turned 31 in November, finished last season with a career-low 49 tackles.

The veteran defensive lineman is a free agent after being released by the Lions in what he called "a mutual agreement" on Feb. 25. He had two years remaining on his deal after signing the $11 million extension in August.

"It's nothing against the people of Detroit, the city or anything like that," the eight-year veteran said. "I'll forever love the city of Detroit, but I just had to go try to put myself into a situation where I saw myself there for two or three years to end my career, and I just didn't see myself in Detroit for that long."

If Pierce opt out saves 9M - I'd go after Snacks in a heart beat.
