bummer....

Eight more players and two coaches with the Miami Marlins have tested positive for COVID-19, as an outbreak has spread throughout their clubhouse and brought the total of cases in recent days to at least 14, sources familiar with the situation tell me....joe blow

Hopefully this isn't a preview of the NFL season, but more guys with much closer contact doesn't portend well. Peter King and some here taking about how pristine the Vikings facility is....better than not, but the virus is airborne and transmits readily.

I think its a preview for ALL the sports trying to restart. MLB is 2 games in and already hosed:

The future of the shortened 2020 MLB season is already under threat, and it’s been one weekend. On Monday the league cancelled the Miami Marlins’ scheduled home opener against the Baltimore Orioles after the sources revealed the Marlins had 10 more positive Covid-19 tests inside the organization, adding to the four who already tested positive ahead of the team’s series against the Phillies.

There were already signs of a breakout on the Marlins heading into Sunday’s game against the Phillies and the two teams played anyway. Now, there is a giant snowball effect. Not only are there all of these positive cases on the Marlins, but we are awaiting to see how this has affected the Phillies. Plus, as Alex Speier pointed out, this has also put hotel staffers where the Marlins were staying in jeopardy. On top of that, the Yankees are scheduled to head to Philadelphia tonight to start a series. That has been postponed.

I think basketball has a chance to work because of the bubble, strip club wings aside. But if the virus spreads even a little inside the bubble, it's toast, too.

The number I’ve seen (possibly out of date) was that tests of an infected person in the first 4 days have a ~67% false-negative rate.

That's easily enough time to "pop" the bubble.

I'm reading that too. It's specifically for those who have just been infected. I suppose that's one of the reasons for a second test a few days later.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/27/2020 12:29:01 PM)

Late to the party with this:

After a COVID-19 outbreak among the Miami Marlins organization, there are growing levels of concern about whether or not the MLB season will be cancelled. Per Jeff Passan of ESPN, the total number of infected players on the Marlins is 11 of the 33 who have been traveling with the team and two coaches. The Marlins’ home opener against the Orioles tonight was cancelled, along with the Phillies’ game against the Yankees which has been postponed.

Since MLB is mostly played outdoors and the players are largely socially distanced, maybe it's more about the team travel on buses, locker room, hotel, meals, etc. The NFL has all those risks, plus playing indoors (granted, not in a small venue) and will have the exact opposite of social distancing.

Gang tackling/pileups at the line of scrimmage are right there with singing in a traditional chorus set up or being in a packed bar full of drunks as probably the worse things a group could do. Testing has to be perfect with instantaneous results for it to be effective.

That's a big problem. The reliability of the results has been inconsistent.

Harrison Smith last three seasons:

1,870 Coverage Snaps
1 Touchdown Allowed

Anthony Harris past three seasons:

1,145 Coverage Snaps
0 Touchdowns Allowed

(PFF MIN Vikings at Twitter)

Bruce Johnson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/27/2020 2:15:47 PM)

PFF also says that Kendrick's 12 pass breakups last year was the most ever by a linebacker.

Smith, Harris, and kendricks are elite. So is hunter. Why oh why did we negate a bunch of their effectiveness by sending Rhodes out there over and over. It made no sense whatsoever.

It makes me happy. It means they have no faith in Rashan Gary the 12th overall pick in 2019.

I would love to have Griffith back at a real friendly team deal. But after an impressive start to 2019 - Griffith was mostly invisible until the Saints game when he mostly played inside.

I don't think he's a huge difference maker at this point in his career, mostly a Robison type contribute (which has value no doubt).

Pager -> RE: General Vikes Talk (7/27/2020 3:50:19 PM)

Best data I could find on false negative rate was 38% when showing symptoms. 20% after 8 days.

Still looking for asymptomatic false negative test rate.

https://www.itnonline.com/content/covid-19-genetic-pcr-tests-give-false-negative-results-if-used-too-early

I believe the above was CPR testing. Below is info on the Antigen rapid tests:

Abbott had a study that 48 out of 49 tests were accurate for rapid test. I also found this: Compared to molecular tests (PCR), antigen tests are useful due to their speed but are not as sensitive, meaning that there is a greater chance of a false negative result. However, they are very specific for the virus so positive results are going to be highly accurate.

https://www.goodrx.com/blog/coronavirus-covid-19-testing-updates-methods-cost-availability/

SI had a good article about a college coach that eliminated tackling and blocking in practice. Texans have 3 showers to increase social distancing. Face guards, limiting contact, and wearing masks in practice might all be in play.
https://www.si.com/nfl/2020/07/27/bill-obrien-texans-rookies-facility-jamal-adams-trade

The national adult average positive rate is about 5%. I believe COVID has a 1.5 (or something) transmission rate - for every person that has it, they spread it to 1.5 persons. I'm sure both those numbers go up dramatically in a closed environment like sports. But I'm curious what that number looks like.

It will all be very interesting. We are still two months away from opening day.
