Whop there it is...

Hats4Bats -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (5/1/2021 6:52:49 PM)

Whop Philyor (Great name)

For four years, Whop Philyor was Indiana’s man over the middle.

The 5-foot-11 slot receiver climbed several of the program’s career leaderboards, finishing his college run ranked fourth at IU in receptions (180) and 100-yard games (seven), and ninth in yardage (2,067). Meanwhile, no Hoosier in school history accumulated more double-digit catch games than Philyor’s seven. He was, more often than not, a major part of what IU wanted to do offensively.

Although Philyor, like the rest of his senior classmates across the country, had an opportunity to return to IU for an NCAA-gifted fifth season, the Tampa native decided he had left his mark on the rejuvenated football program in Bloomington. Now, Philyor is hoping his body of work in the Big Ten is enough to get him picked during this weekend’s NFL Draft.

Philyor is in a similar position as a handful of his former IU teammates in that he’s likely to get a look from an NFL team this spring. It’s just not clear whether his upcoming hire will come through the seven-round draft or the free agency wire. Receiver is arguably the deepest position group in this spring’s draft pool, and it’s expected that there will still be several intriguing, high-upside prospects still available when the draft nears its conclusion on Saturday afternoon. So where might that leave Philyor? Good question!

Pro Football Focus ranks Philyor as the No. 258 overall player in this year’s class, the Draft Network pegs him as the No. 264 overall prospect, and Pro Football Network considers him to be the No. 266 player available. For context, there will be 259 selections made in this year’s draft. So Philyor might be cutting it close.

However Philyor is acquired, Tony Pauline of ProFootballNetwork.com believes the former Hoosier’s greatest selling point could be as a special teamer:

Positives: Diminutive receiver who was also effective as a return specialist. Smooth and fluid, runs sharp routes, and separates from defenders. Tracks the pass in the air, gets vertical, and contorts to come away with the difficult catch. Easily adjusts and makes the reception in stride. Displays strong hands as well as the ability to pull the ball from the air.

Negatives: More quick than fast and lacks a second gear. Occasionally, takes his eyes off the ball, which results in dropped passes. Gives effort blocking but really doesn’t get results

Among Big Ten receivers who saw the majority of their snaps in the slot, Philyor had the fifth-highest receiving grade in the league this past fall (71.5) and the third-highest in 2019 (77.9), per Pro Football Focus. Much of Philyor’s production came between the numbers and in front of the first-down markers. Over the past two years, Philyor caught 39 of the 51 short-center passes targeted for him for 391 yards and two scores, according to PFF. On passes caught one-to-nine yards past the line of scrimmage, Philyor also racked up 263 yards after the catch during that same span.

At IU’s Pro Day in early April, Philyor reportedly ran a 4.58-second 40-yard dash, according to the data compiled at NFLcombineresults.com, which was a little slower than he hoped to show. But there are a lot of other points of interest in Philyor’s college receiving profile that could make him an interesting player at the next level.

This weekend, one way or another, Philyor will hope that opportunity is quick to come.

Blake Proehl

East Carolina wide receiver Blake Proehl will sign an undrafted free agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings, according to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.

Proehl concluded his ECU career with 130 catches for 1,576 yards and nine touchdowns in three seasons on the active roster. The Charlotte, N.C., native and son of former 17-year NFL veteran Ricky Proehl passed up on his final two years of eligibility in college to get a head start on his professional career, announcing his intentions to enter the NFL Draft in December of 2020. Proehl picked up his degree from East Carolina in December.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound Proehl joined ECU as part of the 2017 recruiting class as a two-star prospect, per the 247Sports Composite. Proehl committed to East Carolina over offers from Appalachian State, Charlotte, FIU, Georgia State and Virginia Tech. He played his high school football at Providence in Charlotte.

Proehl was expected to play a big role for the Pirates right away as a true freshman in 2017, but instead suffered a torn ACL in preseason camp. He rehabbed the injury and returned as a redshirt freshman in 2018, playing in 10 games with 29 catches for 329 yards and a score. Proehl improved upon those numbers in a big way in 2019, nabbing 54 receptions for 670 yards to rank second on the team in both categories.

This past season, Proehl enjoyed his most efficient season as a Pirate, needing just nine games to make 47 grabs for a team-high 577 yards. Proehl averaged a career-best 64.1 yards receiving per game.

Proehl, who ran a 40-yard dash in the 4.4s at his ECU Pro Day outing in late March, was extremely dependable when it came to catching the football throughout his career. According to Pro Football Focus, Proehl only dropped two passes during his entire career on 194 targets.

Proehl’s older brother, Austin Proehl, played for North Carolina before being drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the seventh round of the 2018 NFL Draft. Austin is currently a member of the San Francisco 49ers roster.

The Vikings' wide receiving corps is led by former undrafted free agent Adam Thielen and last year's first-round pick Justin Jefferson. Minnesota drafted one receiver in this year's draft class, taking Iowa standout Ihmir Smith-Marsette in the fifth round.

I really like this year's haul. The 6th round DT doesn't move the needle and I'm a bit skeptical of The Chazz but I see a bunch of them sticking around. We're going to be solid this year all the way through our bottom end.

This draft only served as a rocket boost on towards the season

Let's go!

So long as Kirk Cousins represents the engine of said rocket, expect a crash landing in the ocean somewhere around November 1.

He might not be in the running for league MVP but I expect 35+ TD's <10 INT's. Cook to get 2000 APY. The defense to hold teams and put points on the board. We're going to be the best team in the NFC

Classic Viking fan post-draft amnesia about their quarterback.

Brad H -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (5/1/2021 7:34:02 PM)

I will say this about the draft:

We started hot and didn't finish.

Needs were addressed early and things really petered out. People forget, we stayed fairly healthy on the offensive line last season. We have zero depth past the starters. If one or two guys go down we are screwed, which is commonplace in the NFL.

Rd. 1 : Darrisaw (A-)
Solid selection for where we got him and he should be an opening day starter to replace Reiff.

Rd. 3: Mond (B)
Spielman covering his ass because he knows Viking fans don't like Cousins. He'll start as a backup but may get some time in 2021. If he were more accurate as a passer he would have been a first round pick. Love his athleticism.

Rd. 3: Surratt (C)
Didn't really understand this pick. Seems like kind of a tweener to me. Not a pure inside guy. Not a pure outside guy. The team needs a starting OLB. Kind of fills a need. Maybe.

Rd. 3: Davis (B+)
Liked this pick. Seems like he could be an opening day starter in the third round. I only wished he would have been the third o-lineman selected.

Rd. 3: Jones (B-)
Another tweener, IMO. Not a pure edge guy. Not a strongside guy. Could be a starter at some point and may be pressed into action early.

Rd. 4: Nwangnu (F)
Hated this pick. Running backs are a dime a dozen. The guy that went right after him is twice the back. Reached for a gadget guy they could have gotten a round or two later. Probably the No. 3 back in the rotation. A complete wasted pick.

Rd. 4: Bynum (C)
I always like corners, but rarely do I like a corner in the fourth round. With the needs the Vikings had at offensive line, this was the time to start reeling off o-line picks to see if one pans out.

Rd. 4: Robinson (A-)
I liked this pick. Looks like a great athlete for a late fourth round pick at a position of need. Could even start earlier than expected. Like him better than Jones.

Rd. 5: Smith-Marsette (C-)
He's just a guy. Given our lack of depth, he could be pressed into action earlier than normal. Not a red zone guy. Not a blazer but has some speed. Just a guy.

Rd. 5: Davidson (C)
Not a bad pick here. Seems like a guy that could fill multiple roles but could also fill none.

Rd. 6: Twyman (C+)
A decent value pick where we got him. The Vikings were awful last season inside on defense. I doubt he sees a lot of time in 2021.

OVERALL DRAFT GRADE: B- (bordering on B)

The fact that we needed three new starters on the offensive front and only drafted two tells me Spielman doesn't entirely understand the needs of this team. That, or he sees Kellen Mond playing football earlier than expected.

Hats4Bats -> RE: NFL Draft 2021 (5/1/2021 7:56:13 PM)

Tuf Borland's NFL opportunity will come in Minnesota.

The former Ohio State linebacker is signing with the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent.

Borland is the second member of last year's Ohio State team headed to the Vikings, joining third-round pick Wyatt Davis. They join Jalyn Holmes as former Buckeyes on the Vikings' roster.

Concerns about his athleticism and overall speed likely led to Borland going undrafted, but his experience as a three-time captain, ability to stop the run as an inside linebacker and experience on special teams will give him a chance to compete for a roster spot.

A Bolingbrook, Illinois native who came to the Buckeyes as the No. 22-ranked outside linebacker in the 2016 recruiting class, Borland helped lead Ohio State's defense to four consecutive Big Ten championships. Borland was a three-time All-Big Ten honorable mention as a Buckeye, starting in 31 of the 49 games in which he played.

He recorded at least 50 tackles every year from 2017-19 and then racked up 48 tackles in seven games during the shortened 2020 campaign. He finished with 228 career tackles, 19 tackles-for-loss and 6.5 sacks.
