Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman was shot four times in Washington D.C.

His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said it was a "wrong place, wrong time" for the rookie, who was in the nation's capital to visit his aunt, per ESPN's Adam Schefter.

"In talking to him today, he's going to be OK—that's all that matters," Rosenhaus said. "We're thankful he's OK. He will make a full recovery."

Schefter added more details:

Vikings have been apprised of the situation with Jaylen Twyman, who was in a car when he was shot. There were superficial, exit wounds, Drew Rosenhaus said. Twyman does not need surgery. Xrays were negative. The anticipation is he will make a full recovery. https://t.co/6UjwkRV1bY

No, hospitals don't get millions for a COVID death. That's even more absurd than the conspiracy nonsense I've seen on the web. Plus under-reporting COVID deaths is a significant problem: listing the cause of death just as pneumonia, when the pneumonia was caused by COVID. So the public estimate of 600,000 is an underestimate.

The 900,000 estimate is primarily based on excess deaths: deaths above what would be projected if we didn't have a pandemic, adjusted for various factors like essentially no deaths from flu because social distancing wiped out the flu season.

So right now the best estimate of deaths from the COVID pandemic is around 900,000.

Tate would appear to be the savvy vet type to help cover one of those Thursday practice injuries to JJ or AT.

We started the season with a lot of positions needing attention. While the jury is out on how good the new acquisitions will be, the regime did at least address most all needs. Besides WR, I'd like to see them get a DE even if he is a one-dimensional pass rusher. As a minimum, that DE could battle Wonnum and the rookies. Maybe Weatherly can put it all together and be the pass rusher we need, but I have doubts.

I'd also like to see a veteran RG, who can push Dozier out of the lineup if Davis isn't ready.

Weatherly is a physical freak of nature. Just looked up his combine #s. The copy and paste is a bit difficult to read. Sorry.

weatherly works well in zimmer's system...early downs he's very good against the run from the DE spot - he can run down RB's and QB's on the outside...on passing downs we were kicking him inside and that's why his sack numbers are low....

But to answer your question: If you subtract out all of the COVID deaths for which hospitals enriched themselves, you'd get the exact same number of COVID deaths. This isn't a thing.

To be fair he did say "apparently" gives millions of extra dollars for each and every case. Weird he didn't say how many millions of "extra" dollars.

Apparently = Facebook or Tin Foil Hat sourced. Flip a coin.

Medicare pays extra money to hospitals for treating covid-19 (about $13,000), not for attributing deaths to covid-19. When they fill out a death certificate, doctors are required to list ALL contributing factors. If someone dies of cancer while being infected with covid-19, both will be listed on the death certificate.

Okay.

But, does the example you listed above get counted as one of our 600K covid deaths?

I think it does because ND has the 2 different categories for Covid. With covid or from covid.

The total of both numbers is listed on the national website. Not just the 'From Covid' category.

TJSweens -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/22/2021 2:31:33 PM)

Here is something not from Rosenhouse.

Metropolitan police said in a statement that cops responded to the scene after gunshots were heard in the area and found two men who had been wounded. They were taken to a hospital, but were expected to survive. Two other victims who also had non-life-threatening wounds sought treatment at other hospitals, police said.

A silver SUV is being sought in connection to the shooting. No arrests had been made in the ongoing investigation as of Tuesday afternoon, police told The Post.

Sounds like a drive by with multiple people hit.

And again, those state-by-state data issues make the "excess deaths" approach a simpler approach. Digging through all the state death certificates is a major slog, as is correcting for excesses or omissions from differences in state-by-state policies. It's easier to calculate the expected number of deaths, make (minor) adjustments for the lockdown, and then subtract that number from total deaths. And in the US, the result is that the COVID pandemic has killed about 900,000.

It's not a surprise that the death certificate number is lower. Early on, testing was rare. And, for example, NYC had an outsized number of cardiac arrest deaths outside hospitals. Plus other states deliberately understated official COVID deaths by excluding cases without a positive COVID test (omissions because of a shortage of tests, false negatives, and testing isn't done when immediate treatment is obvious and the patient dies, etc.).

Obviously that number is going to go up as the Delta strain breaks out from Missouri & Arkansas, where that strain is driving the case numbers back up. I haven't seen an explanation for the increase in Eastern Texas, but that's plausibly spillover from Arkansas.

I think Twyman gave interviews quite a while ago about how dangerous the neighborhood is, and how badly he wanted to make money to move his family out of the area.

TJSweens -> RE: General Vikes Talk (6/22/2021 3:36:14 PM)

The shooting occurred in the District’s Lincoln Heights section, where Twyman was raised. The 6-foot-2, 290-pound lineman who played college ball at Pittsburgh had previously lost two relatives to gun violence, the Washington Post reported.

“My family members, every other week, one of them deceased or one of them just in a shootout or one of them locked up,” Twyman told the newspaper in 2016. “It’s just pushed me to try to get everybody, get all my family members, out of poverty. Nobody needs to be around this.”

Twyman’s uncle was killed during a drive-by shooting in 2014 roughly a half-mile from Monday’s shooting scene. In 2010, Twyman’s older brother was killed less than a mile from where he was shot, the newspaper reported.

So gunning people down in that neighborhood is just an everyday part of life. We live in an F'd up world.
