Cousins had a very good second half last year improvising and picking up first downs with his feet.

[edit]

I agree and hope that he continues his improvement in that area. It would help our offense immensely.
Stating what can obviously be seen with your eyes only confuses people who rely solely on stats though,
so, don't expect to convince the 'I read stats but never really watch many games' crowd.

In other words, the people who are into the NFL strictly for fantasy football.

Edit:
Stupid phone. And failing eyes.
I thought your reply was directed at my post.

Nope, I agree with you. Just an add-on to Hagar's thoughts on stats people.

But when I read it on my phone I didn't see his reply between ours - that's where my confusion came in

Thanks!

And the ones that claim to know football and whether player X is any good because they saw a tweet
or a blog post from a self-proclaimed "expert".

Mark Anderson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/21/2021 10:58:52 PM)

Positives: Breeland, Dye, 1st team OLine except Hill whiff on Paye

Negatives: Starting DEs, Backup QBs, Backup Safeties

Kicker seems to hit it pretty straight.

Cook, Thielen and JJ need to stay healthy.

Surratt with some added weight could be a player.

I'm kind of reaching but Willekes looked good. Maybe it was the 3rd Stringer he was going against but he deserves another look.

Sure ... let's ignore outside opinion because only posters in here have any insight into the team.

I would add ISM looked pretty good (on returns) / punt coverage was also a positive. Colquitt played a little better

Brad H -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/22/2021 6:28:04 AM)

I'll save my opinions for how this team is going to be for when we have starters out there for four quarters. The only thing anyone can determine at this point is how the backups will be. At this point I think we'd all have to agree ... not very good.

Anyone have the answer to this question? When is our new left tackle going to play football? Last I saw he had had a second surgery on his groin. Is there any updates? At this point it seems as if he will miss a significant portion of his rookie season. Little in the way of practice reps and zero game-time experience leads me to believe it could be a mostly lost season for the kid. I know this....I wouldn't bring him back until he is fully healthy. Plan B seems the likely scenario to start the season.

No problem.

Game wasn't on in my viewing area but judging by the comments it sounded like the rookie Paye had his way with Rashad Hill. With Darrisaw looking more and more like damaged goods LT could easily reach defcon 1 by halftime of week 1.

Given we are starting hurricane season, I'll go with Category 3.

LOL.
In other words, we will need a TE on that side so we have 2 people doing the job of one good LT.

I watch some of these preseason games and wonder to myself, who would possibly pay to go and watch this garbage?

Lockdown was miserable for my teenagers, so coming off of that I'd guess it's a lot of fun for families. My kids aren't baseball fans, but they're always happy to go to a Braves or Gwinnett Stripers (Triple A) game. They couldn't care less who's playing or the quality of play. Me too for the most part.

Yep. And I would say Beebe was open quite a bit. QBs just couldn't get him the ball.

Just as long as there were no serious injuries.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/22/2021 10:56:12 AM)

Cut down day is the 24th
roster of active/IR cut from 85 to 80

As Gm, I’d cut Abdulla, Dozier, maybe a couple backup DT/UT.. because None have shown the ability to hold a spot or be disruptive..

Having said that

Any running back not named Cook, Mattison, Ham, and Rose..hope you make it thru waivers and can get a PS spot..

If Bebe weren’t Brownings security blanket, I’d cut him..

Not seeing ROI for his contact.

Oh and Dantzler better keep working on his deep rout cover lack of skill.. is bubble his ass just to see if he steps up..

Have a convo.. imply his spot on the 53.. might get usurped by a different player.

Dantzler is an enigma.. he flashes good, the he gives up big gains or touchdown like he is completely out of his league in the NFL

Either he misunderstands all his assignments in some of the coverages, or he is freelancing, which I seriously doubt.

Just some random thought on cuts coming.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/22/2021 11:12:20 AM)

Bebe might be good at getting open, but if your not where the QB can see you, or he just can’t pull the trigger..

( I think this is a team coaching point .. not to throw unless the QB is sure..sadly they all won’t cut it loose, or go to deeper routes in the 10-15 yard range..digs, curls, outs.. seam routes..FFS)

How hard is it to just throw it into the stands or into the dirt and live to try a different play..

Bebe takes snaps from IMS, Iwould like to see a lot more of him, after he spends about 40 extra hours with a jugs machine learning to use his hand better, and how to set up his route cuts and moves to quit being contested on every target
His speed and shiftiness are apparent on returns, but he has to learn how to play in traffic and with player on his blind side..read the defense, I know he’s a rookie..

But so was Moss and gronk, and rice, and rashad, and a million others.

Live up to your hype, play with a chip..
It’s the NFL.. live it.

..

I don’t see leadership on this team on offense..

Cook might help tremendously,

I guess a “ scary moment” in a meaningless PS game is enough to keep AT off the field after one target.

Bebe looks good against pre-season scrubs, but he's done nothing the past couple of years against top competition. ISM at least has the potential to become something against better competition, but I agree with the areas of weakness you point out. Also, he's already our best return guy.

ratoppenheimer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/22/2021 11:47:48 AM)

.
.
i think that our defense is going to be solid with all the starters playing - wtf is with barr?...zimmer should have played every 1st stringer that was healthy at least two series on Saturday....

dantzler buffed up and gained some weight this offseason - i wonder if that's affecting his mobility and coverage skills....

i really think that this is the season that zimmer is going to have let kubiak keep the pedal to the metal with this offense - score as many points as we can for 60 minutes....

I don't have much of a clue what the numbers mean but I assume larger the better:

Will Ragatz @WillRagatz
·
2h
The top #Vikings grades against the Colts, via PFF (minimum 15 snaps)

Offense:
- Udoh: 83.8
- Dozier: 78.7
- Davis: 76.2
- Bailey: 68.1
- O'Neill: 67.9

Defense:
- Breeland: 93.7
- Willekes: 89.9
- Weatherly: 89.6
- T. Smith: 82.7
- Mata'afa: 81.7
- Richardson: 74.0

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/22/2021 12:25:18 PM)

Let's go with Ben's takes as well - easier to understand

Ben Leber @nacholeber
·
13h
Positives from tonight:
- Kubiak showed no huddle and jet sweep early. Urgency.
- OL quick to attack. Moved guys
- Kris Boyd continues to have strong camp
- Breeland consistently sticky
- Pierce & Tomlinson showed they are going to be a problem.

Nate -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/22/2021 12:42:51 PM)

Well, 2 games in and I'm still fairly unsure of what kind of team we'll be. Going 4-0 or 0-4 doesn't predict the regular season but it would be nice to see some promise from our non-starters.

Defense:
- even with our wall of humanity DTs playing we still gave up 4-5 yards per rush. Granted we had no Hunter but the fact we still can't stop the run just seems like we have a scheme or coaching problem. It's like they are coached to hold ground and let the LBs tackle, they don't really fire and penetrate through the line. Pierce and Tomlinson could be blowing that up and our DEs should make a run tackle more than once or twice a game.
- the back-up secondary is pretty atrocious. There are still WRs running around wide open, like we've never run a cover 1/2/3 before. This doesn't bode well if we get injuries or quarantines, talent drops off really quick.
- the DL has had almost zero pass rush in two games. Someone has to be able to do more than go from a 3pt stance to a slow dance with their OL partner, good grief!
- all that being said, my confidence level in this D is notches higher than in last years group. We at least have players that have started and played well in most positions. Stopping the run and rushing the passer will be key to us being a dominant D.

Offense:
- so "work in progress" is an understatement. In 2 games, we haven't generated any TDs, made almost no down field throws and none of the QBs have looked like they could've led us anywhere other than away from a vaccination clinic.
- I don't know if we're even running a Vanilla level offense right now. Is it a brand new scheme with kub Jr or are we really this out of sync? There were some decent holes at times in the run game but for the most part it looked like the strategy was to get our punter plenty of reps. Mission accomplished!
- Pass, Run, Pass, Punt; Run, Run, Pass, Punt. Our MO is the same... I've seen more 1 WR sets than I can remember, particularly on passing downs. My concern is high.

Special teams:
- now here we can have some positivity. The punting was waaaaaay better and the coverage was outstanding. The return game wasn't half bad either. Post Sherels, rather than hope we didn't muff a punt return, it looked like we could actually advance one. If we get that kind of effort this year that will be a huge advantage in field position and our sanity.
- Joseph missed one but overall he looks like he has an NFL leg and seems fairly accurate. The term "split the uprights" actually could be used on some of his kicks, not the typical "boy that one just squeaked in there". I hope he can stabilize the position this year. I can't tell if he is a touchback kicker or if they're working on kick return coverage but hopefully it's a touchback type of year.

Intangibles:
- I lost track of our TOs at the end of the game but the scoreboard showed like 1 TO left and 1:14 on the clock. We didn't call timeout on their 3rd down run so we got the ball back with 1 timeout left and 29s remaining. If that is true, why on earth didn't we call timeout and give our QB 1:08 to try and muster something? Boneheaded clock management again!!
- Does anyone we play commit penalties? I have seen a lot of key penalties called on us but almost none of any significance against our opponents. And these are our home games, grrrrrrr.

Welp, game 3 is next week, we'll see a lot of the same crew as in game one I'm sure and we'll be left wondering what we have going into the regular season. I hope the starting offense can get it together before game 3 and hopefully the defense can be dominant like we look on paper.

Beebe is about the 7th best receiving target on the team after Jefferson, Thielen, Westbrook, Smith-Marsette, Osborne and Smith. He's just a guy.
