Anyone else have a high school game in the area cancelled? I drove the player bus to a game, had a tornado warning with lots of rain, went home - gonna try playing it again tonight

- so anyway, this is all of the Viking game I watched - Griffen for 3 plays ... damn he's quick off the ball; Rogers will get him at least 3 times for a offsides first down ;)

There is a tornado watch in effect until 4:30 PM in the twin cities. Nice and sunny right now, but the storm action looks to be rolling our way.

Also, we haven't even gotten started and Cousins is already going to drive me insane if he doesn't open it up a bit. After the game, he stated that coming away with [three] points 'felt good.' Really, a field goal was the highlight of your preseason.

Half the time when I watch him play - or - when I don't watch him play but listen to the posters in here that champion his great stats ... I think that it's not his fault that he lacks success ... its just a bad OL or playcalling or some other exterior factor. Then I watch him play - even a meaningless preseason game - and it stands out how quickly he reverts to a safe completion with no impact over a riskier attempt down the field that might extend a drive or gauge a defense. He's the poster boy for taking what a defense gives you.

Hard to open it up when your top 3 probowl skill players aren't playing, I was glad to see him utilizing our #4 guy effectively.

I think he’s just hard-wired to play that way. The approach doesn’t seem to change with the personnel or playcaller.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/29/2021 11:55:20 AM)

My guess for cut-down to 53 (red players / positions need to be filled / upgraded / changed out / sent to PS)

OFFENSE (25)

(3) Quarterback - Kirk Cousins, QB2 (trade or pick-up), Kellen Mond
(3) Running Back - Dalvin Cook, Alexander Mattison, Ameer Abdullah
(1) Fullback - C.J. Ham
(5) Wide Receiver - Justin Jefferson, Adam Thielen, Dede Westbrook, Ihmir Smith-Marsette, K.J. Osborn
(3) Tight End - Irv Smith Jr., Tyler Conklin, Brandon Dillon
(2) Center - Garrett Bradbury, Mason Cole
(4) Guard - Ezra Cleveland, Oli Udoh, Wyatt Davis, OL4 (trade or pick-up)
(4) Offensive Tackle - Brian O’Neill, Rashod Hill, Blake Brandel, Christian Darrisaw

DEFENSE (25)

(5) Defensive Tackle - Michael Pierce, Sheldon Richardson, Dalvin Tomlinson, Armon Watts, James Lynch
(5) Defensive End - Danielle Hunter, D.J. Wonnum, Everson Griffen, Stephen Weatherly, Jalyn Holmes
(5) Linebacker - Eric Kendricks, Anthony Barr, Nick Vigil, Chazz Surratt, Troy Dye
(6) Cornerback - Patrick Peterson, Bashaud Breeland, Cameron Dantzler, Mackensie Alexander, Kris Boyd, Harrison Hand
(4) Safety - Harrison Smith, Xavier Woods, S3 (trade or pick-up), Josh Metellus

SPECIAL TEAMS (3)

Kicker - Greg Joseph
Punter - Britton Colquitt
Long Snapper - Andrew DePaola

At the very least:
We should add a veteran QB as main back-up. IMO Mond is not ready.
We should add a swing T/G at least until/if Darrisaw can catch up / get healthy
We should add a veteran S that doesn't rhyme with pendejo
***Not knowing Barr's situation, like Darrisaw – I would add a player until Barr is healthy

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/29/2021 12:03:22 PM)

Packers will run away with this division.

The Vikes or Bears will get a Wildcard, probably the Bears.

The Bears win almost every game against Zimmer despite the Vikings having a better QB. Nagy is a better HC than McCarthy, so he can have the Bears beat the Vikes with Dalton, Foles or Fields.

The Vikes should try to trade for Foles, he is a winner.

Basically agree although I think we have a better chance for a wildcard than the Bears.

One year of back-up Foles to red shirt Mond would be a very good plan.

I agree with the following exceptions. Patrick Jones II should make the team ahead of either Weatherly or Holmes. He'd be poached before making it to the practice squad. As a 4th year player, I can't see Holmes making the team given the lack of development. Weatherly seems to have regressed since he last played for the Vikings -- surprise cut? Nwangwu has been injured, but I'll guess they'll try to keep him given his speed.

If not, go with Mond whether he is ready or not

Weatherly hasn't flashed much of anything but would be a surprise cut for sure, for me. He seemed to be one of our first targets this offseason.

DavidAOlson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/29/2021 1:14:16 PM)

I've got one weird idea:

They can't put Westbrook on IR now, because then he's stuck there for the season. BUT...

Cut K Greg Joseph (who's going to pick him up?) to create a temporary roster spot for WR Dede Westbrook, who will make the 53 first and then go on the IR — which allows a return in 3 weeks or some such. Then once he's on IR, use that roster spot to sign a kicker. Perhaps Joseph, perhaps someone else.

It's a fair question.

I think you owe it to your vets – especially since 256,000 of our vets are on one year contracts – to sign or trade for some vet that at least gives you a chance to run the offense ... even if he's not starter material ... compared to Mond who looks overwhelmed by even a simple preseason version of the offense.

Which vet? It depends on who is available and who will be available in the next few days.

I wish Mond had looked readier ...

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/29/2021 1:40:00 PM)

I understand you want to get Mond up to speed as fast as possible ... and I'm just as sick and tired as everybody else of the back-up stiffs that have paraded through here during Spielman's time ...

but why does it have to be a sub-zero scrub like Mannion?

We couldn't have sent a 6th rd pick for Minshew?

I would have been in favor of going after Gardiner Minshew. He throws a nice deep ball. The price was right. I wonder if they showed any interest before he was traded.

#Vikings starting TE Irv Smith Jr. is expected to undergo surgery for a meniscus injury that will sideline him for at least the start of the regular season, per sources.

Exact timetable TBD for now, but Smith seemed poised for a breakout season and now it’s on hold.

Mond isn't getting the benefit of Theilen and JJ, which could change EVERYTHING.

I wish the NFL would have partnered with the XFL or one of the other leagues (that failed) and had a system in place for NFL teams to allocate some players.

Kurt Warner is a HOF QB only because he got a chance to develop/prove himself in Arena league and NFL Europe.

i like what I've seen from mond...with the first team he'll develop just fine...he's got a quick release and a rifle of an arm, gets rid of the ball quickly, and doesn't take sacks...also, he throws to, and hits moving targets....

if cousins doesn't produce this season let's figure out a way to trade him and move on with mond....

sign fitzgerald
sign sendejo
sign kj wright (i wanted this guy a couple of years ago)

I don’t see it, yet. Just because Mond has some draftable qualities … there’s a long way to go to figure out if he is starting caliber, much less a good starter. At the very least, one more offseason - TC - preseason just to get a little better handle on him. Unless he’s pressed into service this season because of injury … he hasn’t shown nearly enough to throw the franchise at him next year. No way.

Would love to sign Wright but unless Barr is a Hunter (or Barr) situation from last year unfolding … can’t see us spending enough to keep him from rejoining the Seahawks.

Put Mond in with some 1st teamers...I remember seeing Dante sit the first year and show zilch....teamed him up with CC and Moss; no issues.

You mean the Daunte picked #11 in the first round of the draft who started year 2 for offensive minded coach Dennis Green with 2 HOF WRs RB Smith and an OL that had Steussie Birk Dixon Stringer?

Insert Mond next year because Culpepper was good in his second year? I'm sure the next comparison will be 3rd rounder Russell Wilson ... if he can do it Mond can.

It doesn't have anything to do with how Mond plays or practices or the specific situation he'd be in?

What are the chances that a 3rd rounder is going to be any good ... much less usurp an above avg QB that, unfortunately, the regime has tied the financial stability of the franchise and their jobs to?

I truly hope Mond defies the odds but he has to do that on merit, not just because lightning has struck there before.

Mond is Tarvaris Jackson and anyone who doesn't see that is delusional...which is not really a surprise here. Wasted pick taking a QB anywhere after the first round. There's a reason why Kellen Mond was taken in the third. The move was to trade up to take Justin Fields...that's what serious teams do when they need a QB.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/29/2021 5:42:55 PM)

I’ve been pursuaded orherwise. Keep lock for future HOF Mond as QB2 this season before unleashing him on the league in 2022.

And sign a S and TE for godsakes.

Daniel Lee Young -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/29/2021 6:04:20 PM)

Nate -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/29/2021 6:42:18 PM)

As soon as I draft Irv in FF, he goes down, how Viking of me...

Welp, we're mighty thin at Safety, TE, LB and OL. I love Smith but that's a huge contract for an older guy, safety to boot. Gotta save that change for other positions. No home team discount for us?

Well .. technically – even if you ignore future Hall of Famers Tom Brady and Kellen Mond, who were not drafted in the first Rd – he doesn't care for the following non-first-round waste of picks either:

Ken Stabler
Brett Favre
Fran Tarkenton
Dan Fouts
