At the very least:
We should add a veteran QB as main back-up. IMO Mond is not ready.

Question: can we still make the playoffs if Cousins goes down with any of the vet qbs out there? - I don't have a clue

If not, go with Mond whether he is ready or not

It's a fair question.

I think you owe it to your vets – especially since 256,000 of our vets are on one year contracts – to sign or trade for some vet that at least gives you a chance to run the offense ... even if he's not starter material ... compared to Mond who looks overwhelmed by even a simple preseason version of the offense.

Which vet? It depends on who is available and who will be available in the next few days.

I wish Mond had looked readier ...

Trade for Foles/sign QB2 after cut down date?

I would. Not sure Bears would deal with us …

I would not have been this passive and waited so long to begin with. We always seem to ‘resolve’ (used very loosely) this early in the offseason so I suspect they’ve made up their mind and will go with Mond.

I mean, they wouldn’t keep three QBs with Browning as #2, right? God help us.

Could stash him (Browning) on PS for a couple weeks....he hasn't shown anything.

For sure. As a placeholder for some other developmental to try out. He got a lot of playing time this offseason, even with the ones, so we should be fully aware of his limitations.

If he stays as a backup for any length of time, it would feel like one of those decisions based on coaches wanting to justify a decision and prove their coaching ability … more than the player’s ability.

And more reason to not have any regrets if the GM and coach get canned. Surely they can see what we see.

This season will be a shit show.

Clean house afterward please.

ronhextall -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/30/2021 9:12:27 AM)

I don't want a better backup. If Cousins gets hurt let the team bottom out and see if Mond is legit.

In other news....

You win Super Bowls with Defensive Line and Cornerbacks. Lets pay a fortune for an aging Safety.

I don't understand what we're doing much of the time either. This season feels like it could get ugly fast. Hopefully we start out fast.

It isn't starting out great that's for sure. With none of our guys really playing it wouldn't surprise me to see more injuries than normal either.
What a bummer about Darrisaw.

Is he still playing at a high level? Safeties can play into their mid 30s.

Don't really care, I would have traded him at his highest value, whenever that was. Shutdown corners and studs that sack the QB are the only things I would pay big money for on defense. Linebackers and safeties I draft and let them walk/trade if they want big money, they are not the answer to winning.

He'll need to extend that thought in to his late 30's.....

I guarantee you the regime sees the deal as a reward for past service plus being the glue that keeps three new CBs and one new S starter in line. I'm not agreeing with it, just sayin ...

Weird how they extend / overpay aging vets like Rudolph and Smith, or solid but not great players like Barr and Cousins but impose a team friendly / player unfriendly deal on someone like Hunter.

I understand the difference in leverage etc but its a crazy world.

He'll be 36 in the last year of this new deal and there will likely be no guaranteed money left by then so an easy cut/restructure. I'm eagerly awaiting the details of his deal. Whatever amount is in the last year can effectively be ignored.

+1
Yes and look at the guaranteed money...$26 million. Not all 64 is guaranteed. Basically this year and next two would be pretty steep. So that is 34....

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/30/2021 3:56:58 PM)

On one hand I'm happy for Smith. He's been a very good player.

On the other hand his best years are in the review mirror so it's tough to justify paying him top S money at this stage of his career.
Also, his leadership is a bit questionable being unvaccinated. In some way this doesn't send the right message which is on q for Spielman.

Mond isn't getting the benefit of Theilen and JJ, which could change EVERYTHING.

I wish the NFL would have partnered with the XFL or one of the other leagues (that failed) and had a system in place for NFL teams to allocate some players.

Kurt Warner is a HOF QB only because he got a chance to develop/prove himself in Arena league and NFL Europe.

i like what I've seen from mond...with the first team he'll develop just fine...he's got a quick release and a rifle of an arm, gets rid of the ball quickly, and doesn't take sacks...also, he throws to, and hits moving targets....

if cousins doesn't produce this season let's figure out a way to trade him and move on with mond....

sign fitzgerald
sign sendejo
sign kj wright (i wanted this guy a couple of years ago)

I don’t see it, yet. Just because Mond has some draftable qualities … there’s a long way to go to figure out if he is starting caliber, much less a good starter. At the very least, one more offseason - TC - preseason just to get a little better handle on him. Unless he’s pressed into service this season because of injury … he hasn’t shown nearly enough to throw the franchise at him next year. No way.

Would love to sign Wright but unless Barr is a Hunter (or Barr) situation from last year unfolding … can’t see us spending enough to keep him from rejoining the Seahawks.

Put Mond in with some 1st teamers...I remember seeing Dante sit the first year and show zilch....teamed him up with CC and Moss; no issues.

You mean the Daunte picked #11 in the first round of the draft who started year 2 for offensive minded coach Dennis Green with 2 HOF WRs RB Smith and an OL that had Steussie Birk Dixon Stringer?

Insert Mond next year because Culpepper was good in his second year? I'm sure the next comparison will be 3rd rounder Russell Wilson ... if he can do it Mond can.

It doesn't have anything to do with how Mond plays or practices or the specific situation he'd be in?

What are the chances that a 3rd rounder is going to be any good ... much less usurp an above avg QB that, unfortunately, the regime has tied the financial stability of the franchise and their jobs to?

I truly hope Mond defies the odds but he has to do that on merit, not just because lightning has struck there before.

Mond is Tarvaris Jackson and anyone who doesn't see that is delusional...which is not really a surprise here. Wasted pick taking a QB anywhere after the first round. There's a reason why Kellen Mond was taken in the third. The move was to trade up to take Justin Fields...that's what serious teams do when they need a QB.

Ok listen up all you trolls.

Wasted pick taking a QB After the first round?

Tom Brady?
Russell Wilson?

Both are pretty good and didn't get taken in the first round.

I can list a shitload of QBs that have been taken in the first round that didn't quite pan out too...

Where he was picked matters not. How he is developed is all that matters.

Lol…

That matters in Minnesota…but, only to “ them”..

All I care about is wining a Super Bowl, and hopefully, never letting a “ former pukker player” wear purple.

Cam Newton released by Pats....should we sign him as a #2?

Murph -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/31/2021 9:17:02 AM)

Patriots just cut Cam

https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2021/08/31/patriot-cut-cam-newton-as-mac-jones-wins-starting-quarterback-battle/

Sign Cam as a back up this year and maybe a bridge for Mond/rookie or a competition between the 3 next season?

Browning isn't even worth a spot on the PS, imo

David F. -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/31/2021 9:23:29 AM)

I realize that the Cam Newton news is the biggest thing at the moment, however, the details of Harrison Smith's new contract just came out as well. I don't have the ability to copy/paste it right now. The final year of the deal has a cap hit of $20 million and a dead cap hit of $1.9 million. He'll never play out that final year. Probably not the second-to-last year either as it has a cap hit of $17.2 million with just $3.8 million of a dead cap hit. Cap hits for 2021, 2022, and 2023 are $6.9, $13.4, and $17.2. Basically it's a 3-year-deal for $37 millionish.

Viking Rich -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/31/2021 9:23:32 AM)

Cam isn't what he once was, but he'd be worth signing

David F. -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/31/2021 9:24:27 AM)

I believe Cam has to clear waivers. We can put in a waiver for him but we'll be 18th in line.

EDIT - we would be 14th in line.
