The Minnesota Vikings have broken the free agency seal by reportedly agreeing to terms with tight end Josh Oliver. According to NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, Oliver and the Vikings have agreed to a three-year deal worth $21 million, including $10.75 million guaranteed.

One of the best blocking TEs in the league.

I love Ourlads for roster info... they have already slotted Oliver.

Maybe people are busy. This was reported like 15 minutes ago.

Take a chill pill.

Nobody react to the dumb move we just made or anything...

Maybe say who we signed and for what first ...

your cryptic 'signing a TE is our first move? ... went right over my head.

Ben Leber @nacholeber

Sneaky love this.
I envision Vikings offense predominantly using 12 personnel now. Hock’s versatility makes this a tough grouping to line up against. #SKOL https://twitter.com/mikegarafolo/status/1635354752677543937

Source confirms the #Vikings have agreed to a three-year deal with former Ravens tight end Josh Oliver. He figures to be a run-blocking complement to T.J. Hockenson.

From atozsports:

The Minnesota Vikings just made a sneaky, yet very solid move on the first day of free agency: the team is going to sign former Baltimore Ravens tight end Josh Oliver to a new deal.

Per NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, the Vikings are giving Oliver a three-year deal worth $21 million. $10.75 million of that is guaranteed and there are included incentives that can bump the deal up to $24 million.

As Garafolo notes in his tweet, Oliver is one of the NFL's best blocking tight ends. He's the ultimate compliment to Pro Bowl tight end T.J. Hockenson, who is one of the NFL's best receiving tight ends.

Now, the Vikings have an incredible 1-2 punch at a position that can really hurt NFL defenses when utilized correctly. Hockenson is actually on OK run blocker, as well. So, it's not like the Vikings will be giving too much away if/when just one or both players are on the field.

I'd be surprised if Kwesi didn't offer a team friendly, non-guaranteed extension for a year (or two) to develop a plan B ...

Ok, I'm trying to educate myself on the dead money, salary cap thing, so, what would that look like?

Defer some of the cap hit to next year, then cut him and pay for it then? [edit] not adding anything to the cap but spreading it out over 2 years?

I'm the last person to analyze this ... I don't believe there's any incentive for Kirk to move guaranteed money from this year without a bigger commitment or take anything less than a fully guaranteed extension ... he'll just say no thanks and pack his bags for the open market in 2024.

I was simply talking about us making an obligatory offer to make him feel wanted for 2023. Since he's here no matter what.

That sounds good but also sounds bad. His agent would sniff that out in a heartbeat and say it's a heck of a lot easier to just send him nice cards and texts.

Then again, I am of the mindset that once the contracts for JJ, Darrisaw, and Hock all hit we will not have the cap to pay nowhere near what Cousins wants. Outside of going with a journeyman or getting lucky on a relative unknown, IMO all signs point to drafting and starting a rookie QB.

I do agree that we will be a shambles for years to come if we extend Cousins or try and sign any pricey vet QB for two or more years ... a drafted QBs contract is easily the best, most straightforward way to go ... to keep the cap in balance moving forward.

if you can draft one that's worthy. No small feat.

No shit. He stumbled into it and posted it like three minutes after the first report of it. Then goes 10 minutes not saying who it is while bitching that nobody is chiming in!

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/13/2023 2:40:28 PM)

Yes! I did mention Kwesi building the roster from the low priority positions out.

Not just a TE but a freakin' pure blocking TE. Before getting under the cap.

The man's a wizard.

I see the logic ... I see the potential ...

but its such an awkward step towards our 'championship roster'.

Nah, just an extension of the competitive rebuild.

Poor Mundt. Ironically, he was one of the initial acquisitions last year.

what does lamar think of oliver?...maybe he's jackson's favorite check-down target....

KOC said we need a blocking TE. Hock, Mundt, Irv Suck Jr... we didn't have one last year.

Kwesi got one.

Good odds it's really two-year deal... with just $11 million guaranteed.

I like the move, let's press on!

I really like this move. For me, it assures me that the Vikings are not only focusing on the defense, but also addressing needs on the offense. Irv is probably gone, (not sure Ive seen much on him this off season), but Oliver gives the Vikings an excellent option to TJ, while also adding punch to the run game. I want the Vikings to move to a balanced offense, keeping then defense off-balance,this is one move to help with that. KAM seems to have a plan, it will be interesting seeing it unfold! This will be a busy week for sure!

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (3/13/2023 3:01:42 PM)

Dump Cook and sign Mattison!

Get Mattison running behind some real blockers!

Back up TE. A real needle mover indeed.

With 23 receptions the past two years... probably not. If anything, Lamar likes his blocking.
