But KOC seems like a smart guy, you'd think he'd start to notice at some point that Donatell's schemes are holding his team back.

KOC, and Kwesi, also know the league and future possible coordinators would alert to giving up on and firing the DC in less than a half season, in the first year of an entirely new regime, with a new scheme in place, and without the proper personnel to run it after a single cap-strapped offseason. Top draft picks Cine and Booth not seeing the field can't help matters.

OTOH it would be a bold move.

Not seeing it.

Marty,
1) Do you go up and grab something to eat when the Vikes are on defense?
2) How many WR do you think we should carry on the roster?

Through five weeks of NFL season

#Vikings Christian Darrisaw remains the #1 OT in run-block win rate per ESPN

Bradbury #8 center in pass-block win rate

O'Neill #9 OT in pass-block win rate

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/11/2022 5:33:04 PM)

I would put on a lot of weight if I got a bite to eat every time the defense took the field, maybe I should get some exercise every time they come on.

I am not for firing Donatellno now, use the game at Buffalo as a decider. Respectable showing (even if they lose), and he stays. Humiliation, and he is gone, position upgraded

WRs, not sure, just want 3 or 4 good ones. I don't think they need OBJ right now, I just don't want the Packers getting him

Although I like the idea of your stray bullets whizzing past Bill's head as you try and target Marty ...

I'm struggling to understand your comments the same way you seem to not understand mine.

Do you think Donatell's schemes are fine, that its the implementation and learning of new schemes that is slowing down the defense?

Do you think the defense is an issue?

The WR thing ... ???

His play calling is great. Could get to elite.

I love the hurry up...Cousins to the line early...backing off...calling audibles...and not running every time I expect. Tons of PA.

I know he designed the plays in St Louis for McVay to call...but I doubt he's extended that to his OC in KOC's 1st year. Don't know though. If he's doing both...kudos to him.

I do like the up tempo ... kinda of reminds of Shurmur in 2017. It must help Cousins to not get too 'locked in' before the snap ...

It would be nice to have a stat for how many audibles were run / pass / successful etc. I'm not sure how effective it really is but it sure looks good / different

Definitely noticed. Like Samuel Jackson's Jules in Pulp Fiction, "We just witnessed a miracle."... except stray and errant is the norm so not really.

Good luck in your struggle to understand!

As for Cousins locking in before the snap... covering his helmet earholes? At home?

Either he can't hear, KOC speaks soft, or Cousins is giving a passive-aggressive FU to the fans for their ill-timed cheering.

100% of his audibles are from a run to play action pass. More FUs, this time to Zimmer. Meanwhile Zimmer is cackling that KC was ballless. Which reminds me (!), does Zim still have that young blonde GF?

Teddy is a QB you should force deep throws

He is good at underneath...we will see

When Teddy was our QB any time a receiver got open deep Teddy would hyperventilate and overthrow him by 10 yards.

Phil and Marty are equally challenged in having a coherent conversation, let alone an idea. It's best just to let it be.

My point is the defense has done better than the last 3 seasons of Zimmer with basically Zimmer's and Spielman's personnel. You can't have everything with their budget. Hicks, Phillips and a couple of 3rd/4th cbs were the big siginings.

Pettine has a position equal if not higher than Donatell.

Yes the defense will improve as they haven't even unleashed Hunter and ZED yet. If you add getting reps for Booth and the rookie LB; yes I think they will improve as they learn the defense. There was an article of how many snaps where Smith, ZED, and Kendricks were still getting the right alignment/moving around right at the snap.

I havent seen the breakdown itself but there was talk a writer had a post that had Zadarius Smith, Ross Blacklock, Chandon Sullivan, and Brian Asamoah rushing the passer on 3rd and 11 with Hunter and Wonnum in coverage.

***

That to me is defending ourselves. Why TF would we ever do that?

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/12/2022 7:42:34 AM)

I don't think Donatell is aggressive enough.

After the Bills game, fire him, and hire Vic Fangio.

Because Donatell is a moron. Hunter brings the heat at level where having him do anything else on 3rd and long is idiotic.

It's maddenig. love to see him defend that at a presser.

Z and Hunter with their hand in the dirt with their ears pinned back will get you chances at game changing plays. Putting them in cvg gives the opposition chances at long conversions.

Hunter doesn't bring the heat any more. Donatell has the defense thinking and guessing on what they should be doing on every play instead of just playing fast and doing their thing. The entire defense looks like none of them have a clue about where they should be or what they should be doing when the ball is snapped.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/12/2022 9:43:18 AM)

I think 5 games in talk of firing Donatell is a bit knee jerk. It is going to take a bit for players to adjust and know the scheme before Donatell can add wrinkles and pick his spots to be aggressive. Add in the fact that 2 of the players drafted have been no shows and that we all knew it would take a couple offseasons to acquire the proper personnel to convert from 4-3 to 3-4.

I get it that the defense looks like hot garbage but we are winning games and the D has been stepping up in the 4th qtr with key stops. We aren't setting records for giving up points in the last 2 minutes of each half so all in all this defense has been better under Donatell than Zimmer and it's clearly not up to speed yet.

Let's give it a full season and see how it plays out.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/12/2022 9:43:28 AM)

It seems like a triple whammy of giving the QB more time to throw, more of a chance of hitting something deep, and better chance of a LBer on a WR.

Donatell worked under Fangio, is this something Fangio did often ?

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/12/2022 10:59:28 AM)

Eagles using Vic Fangio as a consultant:

https://www.bleedinggreennation.com/2022/10/10/23397056/eagles-vic-fangio-nfl-rumors-news-source-report-jonathan-gannon-defensive-coordinator-philadelphia

The Vikings should consider signing him after the Buffalo game. Impressive defense at Buffalo, and I will be happy to stick with Donatell

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/12/2022 11:10:59 AM)

The D is what it is. Firing Donatell mid-season won't help. Barring some crazy successful run, the year is largely about evaluating personnel.

I'm sure they are critically evaluating every player. Harrison for example. If he was simply some player we got this offseason, an argument could be made that he isn't doing anything special. But he has the halo effect going. What about Phillips? Tomlinson at NT is just wrong. Peterson looks done. Hicks is making downfield tackles instead of at the LOS... same as last year with Ari.

Really hope Cine recovers by next year AND that he can get into the lineup beyond special teams. And Booth needs to progress. Otherwise, we've largely treaded water on D for a year.

There should be a minimum of 4 new defensive starters next year.
