Simply put, we don't have the personnel to run an effective 3-4. That was apparent in the offseason and it is apparent now. It may improve a bit, but will not be a finished product.

In a month the people saying it the D will improve as the season goes on will begin to change their tune and shift to saying it will improve in the offseason as visions of cheap, top tier FAs and instant impact draft picks arrive.

My point is the defense has done better than the last 3 seasons of Zimmer with basically Zimmer's and Spielman's personnel. You can't have everything with their budget. Hicks, Phillips and a couple of 3rd/4th cbs were the big siginings.

Pettine has a position equal if not higher than Donatell.

Yes the defense will improve as they haven't even unleashed Hunter and ZED yet. If you add getting reps for Booth and the rookie LB; yes I think they will improve as they learn the defense. There was an article of how many snaps where Smith, ZED, and Kendricks were still getting the right alignment/moving around right at the snap.

No, Z was the big signing.

So when will they "unleash" Hunter and Z? More importantly, why haven't they already? No rabbit hole answers.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/12/2022 11:54:53 AM)

Thought for sure it'd be Teddy as I didn't think he even needed to be held out last game but I guess it's Skyler Thompson.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/12/2022 12:04:29 PM)

Thompson starting makes this a likely Vikings' victory, I have faith in O'Connell to win close games, even with Donatell's de-agressive defense.

I had Vikings at 11 regular season wins, the upset in the first game, and now a win on Sunday puts the team on a 12 or 13 win trajectory.

Todd M -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/12/2022 12:11:29 PM)

2 different feelings going into the bye W vs L. 4 and 2 isn't a bad floor though.

The momentum of 5-1 off into a break would be pretty huge.

IDK. If we're a different team at all we go handle business.

Vikes are likely going to be 7-1.

They better handle business against Skywalker 'David' Thompson.

Fins were massacred at the Jets last week.

I saw Skywalker play at McNichols Arena v. George Gervin I believe in 1978.

I did forget him in my post but still not a big name if you look at $$$. He was an injury risk that signed for $3.1; Phillips and Hicks were paid slightly more ($3-4 million range). They really didn't sign any big names.

It's fair to think Z and Phillips will be around for two years. By that time Z will have earned millions more than Phillips. Z also has some reasonable incentives while Phillips has none.

As an aside to your inclusion of injuries, you didn't mention Phillips' injury history. The man is a walking injury... and that's as a part-timer. While Z's injury probably created some discount, his age is more of a factor. At 31 he is likely past his prime. Just some tidbits.

And with your shift to "big names", reading comprehension is a thing. I never said or implied they signed any big names. "The" big signing is quite different than "A" big signing. The former, which I stated word for word, is in relative terms. I'll explain it to you in a simple way: Two players each sign for 1 million a year. A third signs for 1.5 million a year. The third player is THE big signing, but not A big signing.

Za'Darius Smith signed a 3 year, $42,000,000 contract with the Minnesota Vikings, including a $5,000,000 signing bonus, $11,500,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $14,000,000. In 2022, Smith will earn a base salary of $1,450,000, a signing bonus of $5,000,000, a roster bonus of $3,000,000 and a workout bonus of $50,000, while carrying a cap hit of $3,343,136 and a dead cap value of $6,500,000.

Harrison Phillips signed a 3 year, $19,500,000 contract with the Minnesota Vikings, including a $7,000,000 signing bonus, $12,900,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $6,500,000. In 2022, Phillips will earn a base salary of $1,450,000, a signing bonus of $7,000,000 and a workout bonus of $50,000, while carrying a cap hit of $3,833,333 and a dead cap value of $8,500,000.

Jordan Hicks signed a 2 year, $10,000,000 contract with the Minnesota Vikings, including a $3,000,000 signing bonus, $5,950,000 guaranteed, and an average annual salary of $5,000,000. In 2022, Hicks will earn a base salary of $1,450,000, a signing bonus of $3,000,000, a roster bonus of $500,000 and a workout bonus of $50,000, while carrying a cap hit of $3,500,000 and a dead cap value of $4,500,000.

Just cleaning up some things. Yes, all in all no big names. But if Z is no big name, why do you imply that he is by saying he and Hunter have yet to be unleashed?

New names, New scheme but many aren't living in reality. Pipe Dream for the Defense was top 10 going into the season but middle would be a vast improvement over the last 3 years but it was always communicated that it would be a work in Progress.

It has went from wanting steady improvement to firing the DCord since he isn't top 10 already.

End of Halfs and Defense Scoring are showing improvement for what was invested.

Not disagreeing, although I'm not going to get involved with your two distinct top 10 references.

Win by 13, with Donatell's de-agressive defense, on the road ?

They will probably win by 3 at the most.

Baltimore and Miami have an agressive defense scheme; it isn't always the best to be overly aggressive as they give up really big plays.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (10/13/2022 8:33:45 AM)

This season we have:

9 home games (3-0, one game an easy win and two games down to the opponents last drive)
7 road games (0-1, an "it was worse than the final score" semi-blowout)
1 game at a neutral site (1-0, down to the wire)

The most favorable home/away ratio a team can get.

6 home and 6 away for the remainder of the season.

It's like people saying we have the game in the bag cause we are up a couple of scores late. Suddenly it's 'last team with the ball can win'.

With Luke Skywalker starting for Miami, we should win. No more, no less.

Somewhere at TCO: alright guys great practice. Everyone understands their assignments? Yeah coach. Ok. Wait coach, check out what these fans are saying. Sounds like we should expect to be 5-1. No shit? We’ll then forget about what we’ve been doing in practice. Just go down there and mail it in and cruise to victory.
