Kevin O’Connell said Oli Udoh is out for the season with a torn quad tendon.

That onside kick still has me laughing. I can barely throw a bowling ball that flat.

I'm not sure I've ever seen one roll like that without bouncing. I was fired up for something big to happen to us for once

Ive never seen one laid on the turf like that, wtf? [:-]

If you're going to try something new, how about a very high and short kick that causes all kinds of mayhem under it,
seems like you'd have a 50/50 chance to recover with all the jostling under it...[:'(]

Same here. I wish I had an old football around to try it. I can see where it'd work if you'd just get the corners to bite and it should start doing that crazy sh!t a football can do.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/15/2023 6:36:36 PM)

I read this earlier and it made sense to me when it sunk in ... 12 of the teams were just bad; the other 5 just had some weird stuff happen to them and got over it. Gotta believe this season is going to turn out ok.

Five of the first 17 teams to start with a -6 turnover margin or worse made the playoffs: the 2002 Steelers, 2003 Eagles, 2005 Seahawks, 2010 Ravens and 2011 Steelers.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/16/2023 7:57:11 AM)

From ESPN:

No one expected Mattison to match the production of Cook in his prime, but a closer look at his carries this season -- albeit in a small sample size -- suggests he has not had much room to run. Mattison, in fact, is averaging 0.95 yards before contact on his 19 carries, which currently ranks No. 43 in the NFL. The league average is 2.17 yards. And he has produced more than twice as many yards after contact (44) as before (18).

Of Swift's 175 yards, 133 of them came before first contact.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/16/2023 8:51:47 AM)

I like the Vikings chances against SD at home.

It seemed like Flores defense was giving Hurts and the Eagles passing game some trouble, so they smartly abandoned it, and ran to victory.

The Vikings just needed some guys up front to make a few plays, stuffing some of those runs for losses.

I think SD will stick with the pass more, and that should be in the Vikings favor.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/16/2023 9:32:35 AM)

Gotta beat SD. Just gotta.

And what sucks is those two games were so winnable - even with the huge discrepancies with the line of scrimmage.

-6 turnover -- sigh

Yea, we needed that first draft pick on a WR..

No doubt about that..

Guys wide open all over the field…… because…..

I thought that after they played NE. But, also thought those first games can be deceiving, too

Eagles are banged up, experiencing the Super Bowl loser hangover, yet they are 2-0.

They certainly aren't playing very good. Could still be knocking off the rust from probably not getting PS action like most players/teams. They did lose some very good players to FA on defense so they may not be as good as last year. At any rate they were ripe for the picking and we F'ed up with TO's. Had we been able to hang on to the football we could have built a nice lead there in the first half and may have forced Philly to throw more which wasn't their strength against Flores defense. We may have beat them rather handely had that occurred.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/16/2023 12:18:57 PM)

I mentioned on the game thread that O'Connell should have threw the challenge flag on a deep td from Hurts to Smith. Lane Johnson clearly moved early but wasn't called. I was told it wasn't challengeable and researched it myself and it wasn't listed as a play you can challenge. There was a brief article about how the Vikings got robbed on that play.

Like I said before the season. Lady luck has come to collect and she hasn't been merciful.

Robbed on that play? LOL, I thought they got abused. Smith decelerated after the catch and still waltzed in.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/16/2023 1:06:56 PM)

It didn't take long for the Philly fans to boo Hurts and the play calls. They are on it!

By "robbed" I meant by the zebras not calling an obvious false start on that play.

He was really good against Tampa - breaking tackles and fighting for yards.

He was engulfed by Philly.

I can't believe how many of those calls Ive seen let go in college and pros this year. Once again, it's a very easy call to see.

Maybe it's a unstated way of protectiing the QB, thing ;)

it's the blocking, man...the only way to save this season is to bring in a couple of guards, and a tackle....

He's always been a brawler. And he has always been a nice break from Cook. No beating around the bush.

Just doesn't have an explosive element to his game. Kinda a Leroy Hoard on a quarter of a steroid.

I also thought he looked 'crisper' his first two seasons. He averaged 4.6/4.5 in 2019-2020. Last two seasons, 3.7 / 3.8.

All better than the 3.3 this year so, yes, he's better than he's looked so far. Just not sure how much.

We'll see as we go along, with no improvement on the OL or change in the playcalling / scheme ... I think we are seeing what we can get from him.

I seem to be wildly overestimating or wildly underestimating players at this point ... its so early in the season, its hard to have a solid feel.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/17/2023 9:51:14 AM)

So, if I’m reading the board right. Upgrade both interior lines and we’d have a much improved team. Who could have predicted that???

Ur doing great KAM! The Ham extension was sneaky as a Fox you crafty bastard😎

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/17/2023 10:59:33 AM)

I predicted before the season that the Vikings would trade for a RB before the trade deadline, similar to when they got Hock last year.

But that was contingent on the team being competitive. They're likely to have a losing record at the trade deadline, the way it looks right now.

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/17/2023 11:24:11 AM)

Crazy scores from week 1:

NYG 0 pts

Cinn 3 pts

GB 38 pts - ouch

MN 45 pts - wait, that was 2 games

- NYG (@ AZ) and Cinn (v Balt) are favored in wk2, GB (@ ATL) is not, let's see how that turns out

-- a lot of "upsets" in week 1 - of course the "upsets" were picked by the "experts," iow, based on how they did last year.

--- week 1 can fool you, especially if you're not ready to play, for eg: you're only real-time action is when AZ & TN come to your practices

---- and MN had to play two games in week 1, so maybe this won't be as bad as we all fear

----- this optimistic moment was brought to you by RJ

Ricky J -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/17/2023 12:03:09 PM)

I'm rooting hard for a KC (@ Jax) loss. I want to see how they handle the % of teams 0-2 that make the playoffs.
