ORIGINAL: Bill Johanesen From ESPN: No one expected Mattison to match the production of Cook in his prime, but a closer look at his carries this season -- albeit in a small sample size -- suggests he has not had much room to run. Mattison, in fact, is averaging 0.95 yards before contact on his 19 carries, which currently ranks No. 43 in the NFL. The league average is 2.17 yards. And he has produced more than twice as many yards after contact (44) as before (18). Of Swift's 175 yards, 133 of them came before first contact. He was really good against Tampa - breaking tackles and fighting for yards. He was engulfed by Philly. He's always been a brawler. And he has always been a nice break from Cook. No beating around the bush. Just doesn't have an explosive element to his game. Kinda a Leroy Hoard on a quarter of a steroid. I also thought he looked 'crisper' his first two seasons. He averaged 4.6/4.5 in 2019-2020. Last two seasons, 3.7 / 3.8. All better than the 3.3 this year so, yes, he's better than he's looked so far. Just not sure how much. We'll see as we go along, with no improvement on the OL or change in the playcalling / scheme ... I think we are seeing what we can get from him. I seem to be wildly overestimating or wildly underestimating players at this point ... its so early in the season, its hard to have a solid feel.
