Is there any buzz (good or bad) about Tillery in the local coverage? DT is a big question mark for this team and I was hoping he'd help but I haven't heard one thing about him.

Local buzz is that he has looked solid... however, he got cleated early in camp and has been out so that is with pretty limited looks.

He got cleated like the first few days they put pads on.

Hard to get a feel on anybody in shorts.

The team is going to look super different this year than the year before, more than most years it seems. QB, RB, maybe both Guards. If Addison is suspended and Hockensen’s injury lingers … #2-3 WRs will be different to start… Tonyan is another mystery but we’ll need something more than Oliver Mundt until TJ returns. And that’s on the ‘stable’ side of the team. On defense? Holy cow … Tillery, Greenard, van Ginkel, Cashman, Gilmore, Griffin …

A ton of new backups and rotational players as well.

Crazy turnover. Which is exciting but hard to project, at least for me.

Its really going to help cutting our teeth against the Giants to start.

I think Flores did an amazing job last year with limited personnel at IDL and CB. If the added pieces are as good as PFF says they are against the pass and we stay healthy......

IMO Flores did a very good job of being aggressive, hiding pressure and coverages, with ok talent. Offenses started to catch on a bit, greatly helped by our QB flounderings on offense.

We ended up middle of the pack in a lot of categories / higher in a few categories … its always hard to compare team defense or offense rankings … but just by comparison to the year before … it was a big jump. Changing schemes while improving deserves extra credit.

But it still felt IMO like a middle of the pack defense. Vulnerable.

Can’t wait to see our new augmented version.

if I could add one thing.. it would be a Jerry Ball or Randal McDaniel. In the middle of the DL.

Interior DL is crucial in a 3-4 to free up those LB’s.

Agree. This has come up before. Phil's counter was a plethora of CB injuries later in the season. It was worth looking into. There was just 1 game where more than 1 CB was out, the last game of the season. If your scheme is based on having a shutdown CB and said CB gets injured for a half season, that's one thing. But obviously, that wasn't the case.

2023 Inactive:
Murphy 16, 17, 18 (bye week incorporated into week #s)
Evans 11, 12
Blackmon 7, 18
Metellus (was sort of the 3rd safety) Played all games

So IMO yes it was the opposition figuring things out and it started with that weasel Sean Payton in the 4th quarter.

It's not really a knock on Flores because he had to carry boatloads of duct tape to every game. Now with potentially very good (hopefully) players at both Edge positions, he might have a fighting chance.

If Greenard and Turner are consistently awesome, I'll be drooling for a top CB draftee and the best FA CB to add to the puzzle. Throw in a 350 lb. NT and watch out!

Two drafts in a row with Kwesi trying to appear cunning and enigmatic while everybody waits for the obvious.

I'm amazed we ended up with a QB that may be good ... after giving ourselves no other real choice.

Kudos to him.

Next year will be the same with CB. Actually, its even tougher with no other picks in the first 4 rounds lol.

If we're good enough to pick in the 10-20 range ... that's a lot of teeth gnashing waiting for favored prospects.

While Kwesi discusses the team's flexibility.

I was listening to Purple Daily yesterday and one of their "camp notes" was they think Risner is cut. He's never played RG and isn't even practicing there. They weren't sure if it's because he's injured or just doesn't want to.

Yup.

You could tell Payton had a handful of plays to use against us in his pocket. And when he needed that late score, we had no answer. And we saw more teams targeting our weaknesses after that game.

Not really a flaw in the scheme as much as a lack of talent.

I remember hearing something negative about Risner as well but not sure what. Same with Ingram rumors of not starting.

Either SI's Ragatz or the Strib beat writers, my 'go to' sources for innuendo.

I can't figure Risner out.

I found this tweet from right before Browns game.

Looking like starter Ed Ingram will start at RG. Dalton Risner not in uniform. Tyrese Robinson looks to be starting at LG.. Doesn't appear that many if any starters playing other than Ingram.

Maybe Brandel is starting at RG. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

Their take on the roster was:

Darrisaw
Brandel
Bradbury
Ingram
O'Neil

Feeney
Quessenberry

Rouse
Jurgens

Their thinking on Feeney and Quess is that they are both swings that can cover all 5 positions, if needed. The rooks in a pinch.

I think we keep all the drafted and more of the udfa's because we have so few draft picks next year - kwesi will be more forward thinking this 53....

I've also heard that signing gilmore will negate any compensatory draft picks we might have received next year....

Any comp picks... as in his signing means we get nothing?

I read signing Gilmore will likely negate any chance of a second 3rd round comp pick, but have no idea if that's valid.

I'm pretty sure the "Compensatory Period" ends after the draft. Meaning any FA signed after will not count against a team from gaining compensatory picks for FA adds/losses.

it looks like you are correct....see below....

[A] Compensatory Free Agent (“CFA”) shall be defined as an Unrestricted Free Agent (“UFA”) who: (i) signed with a new Club during the prior free agency signing period […] prior to 4:00 p.m., New York time, on the Monday following the NFL Draft for that League Year1

Brandel
Badbury
Ingram

That IOL just isn't going to cut it.

Brandel seems like one of the old guard, guess he'll have to do for now.
Anybody but Badbury!
Banking on Robinson to start, you have to take risks sometimes. Get rid of Ingram.

Other deadwood that needs to go:
Bullard, Lynch. Enter Rodriquez and Taimani!
Asamoah, Evans.
Harrison Smith might completely fall off the cliff this year.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/21/2024 2:52:20 PM)

This is Murphy's last year, and he has one of the highest cap hits on the team.

I think he sucks, but will see how he does in the slot hopefully full time.

He also has $4.2M in dead cap due next year if he's not on the roster, thanks Kwesi.

.
.
lewis cine interview this week....

“I’m not oblivious to knowing this is a business at the end of the day, but I’m confident in myself, I’m confident in the player that I am. A healthy me is a dangerous me, so that’s all I can say about that.”

Invoking “it’s a business” verbiage usually indicates a player knows his roster spot isn’t on lock. Cine very much looked the part of a 1st-Round pick at Cleveland, the first time any Vikings fan could utter such a statement 2+ years. General manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah made Cine the first draft pick of his tenure — notably passing on Baltimore Ravens safety Kyle Hamilton — and the Georgia alumnus has disappointed to date.

But he did no such thing last Saturday, flying all over the field in what may have been his last best chance to prove himself and earn a spot on the 53-man roster this season.

I was listening to Purple Daily yesterday and one of their "camp notes" was they think Risner is cut. He's never played RG and isn't even practicing there. They weren't sure if it's because he's injured or just doesn't want to.

Maybe they're hoping that Ingram gets injured.

I would never wish injury on anybody ... but I do hope he quits football and pursues something he could be successful at, like being a mystery shopper or focus group participant.

lewis cine interview this week....

I will say this ... I am now very very interested to see what happens with Cine ... if he plays against Philly ... and after.

That's almost single-handedly your fault.

This is Murphy's last year, and he has one of the highest cap hits on the team.

I think he sucks, but will see how he does in the slot hopefully full time.

He also has $4.2M in dead cap due next year if he's not on the roster, thanks Kwesi.

Murphy came in with a almost Gilmore-like fanfare only he's younger.

And I agree, he hasn't played well.

I'm hoping he turns it around like Hicks did last year who looked like a garden slug his first year.

Several posters have commented that he should play better in the slot ... I hope so.

Since we are augmenting our roster with one and a half draft picks a year, we need to get our FAs up to speed faster.
