Bill there were several articles in the last month that talked about McLaurin being traded to the Vikings, many more on Thielen, but several on MacLaurin.

One of the articles on Thielen to the Vikings, said Carolina won't be able to get a 3rd or even a 4th round pick from the Vikings with other options like McLaurin, Daubs, Hill, and others that could be traded for, along with some that might be cut.

Any decent WRs get cut today, I haven't looked at the list ?

Those 'articles' are all from the same site, and interestingly obsess about a single player.

Woeful journalistic examples aside, McLaurin being signed did not remove a 'chip' as you call it or change the Vikings' leverage in any way in their quest for a cheap, fill-in WR.

Articles are something Ricky hasn't read, so he wants others to go back and find the articles they have read, because Ricky thinks others might be making up articles to prove their point, because Ricky hasn't read these articles.

Ricky wants nothing of the kind.
Never known you to be such an ass, marty.
Then again in 2025 saying the necessary information to provide weight to a debate was in "articles" may be sufficient for documentation purposes.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/26/2025 8:32:39 AM)

Cutdown day.

Figuring Scott in, Chandler out.

Will they carry 7 DL? All of Redmond, I-D, LDR, Williams, and Taimani could make the 53.

Can they keep Murphy and Richter?

Barring any trades, likely inexperienced CB depth.

WR TBD over the next month.

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/26/2025 8:35:43 AM)

Cam Akers released. Does Kwesi bring him back or wait to trade for him later?

I don't think you risk losing Williams. If Baldinger noticed him, other teams will be after him.

Drake-Rodriguez could maybe make it through waivers and get put on PS.

Definitely wait then use one of the 6th rounders.

McLaurin wouldn't have been Cheap anyway.

His hold out or whatever was because he wanted to be paid. We don't want somebody that wants to be paid like that.

I like the roster compared to last year at this time. Certainly the depth at most places, not all.

The main thing obviously before week one is how semi-rookie JJ plays compared to draft-bust Danold.

Hard to project wins losses with that big question mark ... last year I was guessing 5 (to 7 wins range) so what do I know. [although to desperately save face, and with a lot of artistic license, I would say we played like an 8-9/9-8 team in our last two games]

Without having any objective data to base it on ... I expect less consistency this year from JJ than 2024 reg season Darnold but less panic in big situations ... once JJ gets his feet wet.

The secondary situation is very iffy, top to bottom. Competence with less focus on dance routine will go a long way to the defense meeting expectations.

I think the big FA beef we signed on the DL are known more as interior pass rushers – is that just my perception? – it remains to be seen how we do against the run.

I do like the young DLineman behind Hargrave and Allen.

All in all, better depth at WR and CB is necessary for sure but maybe less than the gaping head-scratching holes we usually start the season with.

But…but..

We could get KFC as a vet presence, to “ bolster” or “never threw an actual pass in a real nfl game”.. QB room..

Oh wait.. Carson went z is the new #2..

Yay!

Initially, WR looked ok but injuries and idiocy have wrecked that for a while. IOW, they initially had a pretty good mix at WR.

Jefferson (Hamstring)
Addison (Freeway Nap)
Nailor (Hand)
Felton (Rookie)
Moore (IR)

Maybe they'll run 70% of the time the first month and JJM will feel right at home.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/26/2025 10:26:15 AM)

Those 'articles' are all from the same site, and interestingly obsess about a single player.

The site collects articles (no reason to use quotes) from different sources. The articles, the 3 I listed on McLaurin were from US Today Sports, The Wrightway Sports Network, and Clutch points.

I read articles from this site, and also many other sources. So when someone questions me as if I am making up such hypotheticals, I don't make up these things, if I read articles on them, I read articles on them. If it was my own hypothetical, I would proudly own it.

Because I read so many sources, and read on many other topics, it can be a pain in the @ss to go back and try to find several of them.
I don't make these sorts of things up, and the writers usually give a few good reasons why a team might acquire a player.

Although McLaurin would have been expensive, if Washington were stubborn and didn't want to pay him, the Vikings would have had a very nice trio of WRs for McCarthy to start with.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/26/2025 10:29:23 AM)

As for the roster compared to last year, absolutely. Look no further than these 5 starters from a year ago:

Brandel
Bradbury
Ingram
Bullard
Tillery

Woeful journalistic examples aside, McLaurin being signed did not remove a 'chip' as you call it or change the Vikings' leverage in any way in their quest for a cheap, fill-in WR.

Despite your ego, these writers have a point about supply and demand. With McLaurin resigning, Amari Cooper signing with the Raiders, the smaller pool will make it harder for the Vikings to fill the current vacancy at #2 or #3, and Carolina can stick to an asking price the Vikings won't want to pay for Thielen, such as a 3 Rd rounder.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/26/2025 10:38:55 AM)

Maybe they'll run 70% of the time the first month and JJM will feel right at home.

This could be current thinking for the 1st 3 weeks, but could make it pretty easy for opponents to shutdown the Vikings offense, key on Jefferson and the run game, and you can keep the Vikings low on points.

While we should see expected improvement in the interior OL and DL, it may not be as immediately noticeable if it takes a little time to develop chemistry.

If the defense gives up a few big plays here and there, and the offense is shutdown with defenses keying on JJ and the run game, this team could easily start out 0-3.

Yes, because McLaurin and Theilen are so very similar in terms of salary and trade resources [:-]

You do realize there are tiers of players right?

Rhetorical question because no you don't.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/26/2025 10:41:09 AM)

I never said they were similar in terms of salary, am only talking about supply and demand.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/26/2025 10:49:12 AM)

Bill, that is such a great point about wide receivers being on different tiers, probably not something anyone in this forum considered.

Have you considered liking your own post on that, giving it 5 stars, or 6 tiered stars [&:].

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/26/2025 10:53:47 AM)

Carolina GM: Well, there goes McLaurin. 3 yrs, $96 million. Looks like you are running out of options!

KAM: Uh, we're looking in the $6 million range not $96 million. A rental for a month.

Carolina GM: Yep, McLaurin would have been perfect for, as one of your fans says, your #3 WR vacancy. But now you have to offer more, way more.

KAM: Time for me to catch a flight out of Loonville. No wonder your team sucks.

The point is their disparate salaries have no effect on supply and demand.

Sarcasm? I'm sure most anyone here gets it, but you obviously haven't considered it.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/26/2025 11:15:06 AM)

Any news on Nailor? If he can play in two weeks, we're only down Addison. In that case if your depth is so bad you have to trade for someone so late in the offseason to overcome one injured player then you have bigger problems.

Maybe Nailor can play three weeks from now? In that case we could just suck it up for the opener.

OK. The Vikings are trying to get Theilen because he knows the system. But they really only NEED him per se, for the first three games of the season. Otherwise opposing defenses will pile three guys on Jets and take him out of the games. Add a Theilen and voila, you still have to defend two WRs. We still have Nailor (a little dinged up) who filled in well to start the year last year when Addison was out hurt. We have a rookie or two Felton and Price (if he makes the roster) who are still learning the system. We can get by without adding. McLaurin would have been nice talent wise, but there are other factors to consider, like he wanted to get paid. and we didn't want to hand over higher and more draft picks and to fork over a huge contract for a guy that we really only needed for three games (knocks on wood).

So, if we fork over a couple of low draft picks and get a guy that's been good, on the tail end of his career but knows the system and can still kind of bring it...why not?

Panthers aren't going to demand more because McLaurin is now signed since he was never an option.

Vikings were more likely to resign Brandon Powell.

We aren't actually desperate.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (8/26/2025 11:58:25 AM)

KJ Osborn is now a FA.
