bust of the century?

We've already determined that after just two games, one of which he engineered a bigtime comeback and won?

A Little soon for that, methinks.

Given the rest of the post you couldn't pick up on the sarcasm? Rhetorical question.

Edit, I see it's been discussed.

Lars -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/19/2025 12:34:08 PM)

If we want to use a two-game sample size for QB performance, then Darnold (the apparent QB god in some people's eyes), might be worse than JJM if you look at his last two games here. Hell, the Rams games was BRUTAL! Writing this kid off or saying he is not ready after a couple of games is ridiculous - especially if you are clamoring for Darnold. GMAFB.

And sorry, Wentz is not the savior of our franchise.

I guess my sarcasm wasn't apparent.

I think he was jabbing at Brad H more than countering you....lol

I was jabbing at the term bust of the century.

I'll admit that I didn't read back over several posts to get all the context etc when I responded here.

So Sorry I missed the sarcasm.

But I am certain from the history of this place that someone did already give up on JJ McCarthy.

Im not giving up but I have my concerns. He's missing more time again. Hopefully it doesn't become a normal thing. The guy needs a lot of work and sitting isn't going to be the answer

Speaking of concerns, mine are not much greater than they were two months ago just like with any rookie QB. But JJM certainly has not done much to alleviate those concerns.

That's due in part in not believing KOC is some sort of a QB guru, a QB whisperer. Dobbs went the opposite way. Hall was a bust here. Cousins was already good in terms of putting up stats. Granted he may have brought out the best in Darnold. Until he didn't.

KOC damn sure has not been a guru when it comes to pressure games, drives, plays. Both Cousins and Darnold choked big time.

So I see JJM as a typical QB who has played just two games.

One difference is I had hope for a 1 % chance he plays great right from week one, he busts down the rookie wall, and he leads the team to the playoffs. A Hail Mary/Onside Kick recovered hope at best.

I don't think anyone has written him off. Saying he is not ready can cover the spectrum, from implying he just needs more time to implying he will never be good.

IMO he's not ready right now to turn it around and play good or even average in say the next six games But there is no substitute for game experience. Being out a couple of weeks might help with a mild reset, yet overall get him out there and analyze his performance at the end of the season. Give him two years then look for a QB as needed. Perhaps even let him start the following year for a couple of games and if he's still crap then start the new QB.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/19/2025 1:16:22 PM)

Very much looking forward to this game.

It's a small distinction, from babying the qb position to simplifying the qb position (for a 'new' 32 yr old backup).

But it is different ...

Hopefully, we can level up and stabilize a bit, not having to hyper-fixate on the position.

KOC has been Dr Frankenstein the first two games, pulling levers, tweaking electrical instruments, raising and lowering his project into the lightening storm.

Anything to fix his creation, that his reputation and the future of this team are leaning on.

It ain't alive yet ...

But at least now KOC can go back to focusing on better play calling and gamesmanship.

Hopefully.

I have to think Wentz – at best – is going to be very very average.

But that may still help us to regroup a bit.

We are obviously coming back from the team that lost the last two games of 2024, not the 14-3 version.

Regroup and improve. Its possible.

Would like to see the decision to keep playing Wentz over inserting JJM as quickly as possible to at least be a little difficult.

My hope is this. Wentz in just competent enough that with his play the offense can score some points and let the defense off the leash. The Defense has been pretty good for the last two games. If they offense could have shown any real life on Sunday we would probably be 2-0. Can Wentz do that? i dont' know. But I hope Wentz plays well enough that they don't have to rush JJ back.

And then we can have a "good Problem" when JJ's ready.

TJSweens -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/19/2025 2:26:54 PM)

I disagree with the assessment that the defense has been pretty good. They're getting pushed all over the field and gotten lucky with the amount of receivers running loose. They haven't given up points because of the Bears and Falcons propensity to shoot themselves in the foot.

BisonFan -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/19/2025 4:15:12 PM)

Yes, I am a Bison fan and I hope Wentz does well. I am also a realist and guessing he will have at least one or two turnovers in the games he plays. But what the heck JJ is doing that too. We just need to ride this out until we get healthy which cannot come soon enough. Side note, excited to finally have one normal start time for a game. Our schedule is horrible to start the year.

If Pace doesn't improve, see what Kobe King has to offer. It can't be any worse.

He couldn't tackle Robinson at all. Pace looks a step slow and tends to not wrap up the legs when he attempts to tackle. King was an absolute menace on defense for Penn St. Maybe he needs some run.

I think these two 2-game samples are showing a 4 game sample of KOC getting figured out by opposing dc's

That said, I worried about JJM when we drafted him, as he has nothing but "winner" on his resume and reading a defense or putting a team on his back and willing a win or quick release or accuracy, etc were not part of that resume...

I admit he showed some potential in his 1 quarter (out of 8) of brilliance that earned him Offensive Player of the Week

I hope he can truly become "the guy", but not holding my breath on a high school and college star out with his second injury in less than 2 yrs

i think it's in the arm length...pace 30.25", king 31.25"...we also have austin keys on our 53, he was one of the top undrafted free agents in '25 - could not find an arm length for him....

fred warner - 32.25"

for sure, at his present level, pace is an overachiever, but he'll end up a good special team player and backup lb....

They've been awful. But in their defense they've been on the field a lot. Our offense has only ran 47 plays/game and I believe the avg is 63.

Packers lose, tied for first

Bill Jandro -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/21/2025 3:14:19 PM)

We were a buzz saw today

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/21/2025 4:30:52 PM)

So many great things with the Vikings today, great day.

The Packers were actually called a few times for committing PI every play, Love did some not so clutch things, and Parson showed some signs of becoming a cancer, and the Packers lost.

Chris Olson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/21/2025 5:13:56 PM)

Almost everything was good about today's game...

All 3 phases were great...

The penalties were the downside

The Packer collapse was awesome, taboot!

Chris Olson -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/21/2025 5:16:07 PM)

Nice to see the offense with an average QB

The Packers were flagged for continuously committing PI, Love choked, Parsons is a cancer, and the Packers lost to shitty Cleveland.

Pros/Cons

Pro
Rodgers legendary game. Made me feel like maybe the secondary could be good... we'll see.
HSmith impacting game immediately. Think I underestimated his value to the def.
Dominant Darrisaw. Saw him hand Hendrickson his ass a couple of times... awesome.
Run game... again... think Darrisaw is huge for this oline. Mason/Scott combo was awesome.
Reichard... right on!
Carson a great vet job of making no mistakes and using weapons available.
Hock finally looking like a threat.

Cons
Dline disruptive but can't seem to close out sacks.
Was hoping Turner would have a few more splash plays over 3 games.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/21/2025 6:54:33 PM)

Rodgers is the first player with an interception return for a touchdown, a fumble return for a touchdown, and two forced fumbles in one game. . .and he did it in one half.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/21/2025 6:57:38 PM)

We really should've beat the Falcons...

Penix looked tentative and was ineffective from the start, finishing 18 of 36 for 172 yards with 2 INTs before getting benched in the fourth quarter for Kirk Cousins with the Falcons trailing 27-0.
