J.J. McCarthy is out 2-4 weeks, per @AdamSchefter

That would put him out for Week 3 vs. Bengals and Week 4 vs. Steelers in Dublin.

So do they bring him to Europe to continue recovery and have him start Week 5 vs. Browns in London?

Or do they sit him through the Week 6 bye?

I'm all for having him sit until week one of the 2026 preseason. I saw nothing that says he is ready to play in the NFL.

Really? Didn't you compare him to Baker after his first start? I bet I can find the post.

How good do you think Baker is?

I did say he had a little Baker Mayfield in him after the opening game. This week I saw JaMarcus Russell.

Quite a wide range in 2 weeks....don't you say?

A little Baker Mayfield. A lot of JaMarcus Russell through two weeks.

Key word....LITTLE

And for clarification, it isn't two weeks. It's his second season. He's also got a lot of Sam Bradford (injuries) in him.

It is two games. Maybe JJ, Wentz, or Max will be the man, but it isn't Sam any more. Sorry dude. We are talking Wentz now and you can lay off of JJ.

I actually liked what I saw from Max during the preseason. It was meaningless football but he looked like a kid with confidence. Wentz brings us some experience, which we could use right now.

My biggest concern right now is the health of the offensive line. If those guys don't get healthy it doesn't matter who is under center.

Our revamped o-line has played one good half out of four. The other three halves were putrid.

It doesn't matter who we put out there. Always woefully inadequate. Our staff has no clue what it's doing for Offensive line play.

After a year and two games, that's about right.

After a year and two games, that's about right.

Well … he wasn’t a draft bust warming the bench for four or five seasons after flaming out, like Darnold.

JJM’s injury stopped any real chance for on field development.

So no, he’s played two games.

I’m not going to make excuses for him, JJM has flamed out for 7 of 8 qtrs his quasi-rookie season. Against what looks like one horrible and one not good team. Period.

And he’s injured again, further diluting his development. Although for my money, its almost like a well-deserved benching after the ATL game … give him a chance to REALLY see how bad he was doing.

The one good quarter is significant though, or might be, even if it was against the bears. It doesn’t make up for being lousy, but it may indicate something that can be worked with. At some point.

This team is in trouble with or without JJM, another year of Darnold, or trade for Cousins. Not just from injuries either. It feels like both KOC and Flores have started really slow calling games around concepts they want to install, not around the new roster mix that was created this offseason.

It would be nice to see the team / staff calm down, play through it, make adjustments and start improving into a good team. Which has never happened under KOC. He gets them out of the gate and steady for 14-15 games before they dwindle and collapse.

It would also be good to see JJM plugged into a team that isn’t making his life hell, hard to tell how bad or good he’s going to be down the road, playing for the team didnt show up the first two games.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/16/2025 1:03:24 PM)

I don't know. JJM got a lot more exposure to the game and in the playbook than 99.9% of most rookie QBs.

So he's not a pure rookie by any means.

In terms of actually doing it ...

Lars -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/16/2025 1:32:23 PM)

Darnold's last 2 games here (same two-game sample size):

18/41, 0 TD, 0 INT, sacked twice, lost
25/40, 1 TD, 1 INT, 1 Fumble lost, sacked 9 times, lost

Two bad losses. 1 TD and 2 TO. Sacked 11 times. Looked like shit. Seeing ghosts out there.

And those were both games that, to me, felt a lot like the ATL game we just watched. Lost control of the LOS, and gameplan and adjustments were dogshit.

McCarthy needs to play much better. But maybe, just maybe, the playcalling and OL has something to do with QB performance as well.....

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/16/2025 1:40:00 PM)

He (JJM) has held the ball an average of 3.15 seconds before throwing, second highest in the NFL.

He also seems to take a while from the beginning of his throwing motion to release. Seems like it could be a few years to clean up some things with him. I don't see a guy who's ready right now. Thats OK but missing more games isn't going to help imo. The guy needs reps.

To the point of his throwing motion, the telecast showed Penix with a crazy fast release. Nothing new there. His injuries in college were IMO worrisome though. Yet here we are with injured JJM.

I think JJM did two almost unassisted front flips in the Atlanta game. He needs to settle down. And KOC might need to dial back the playbook, IDK.

Again, just hoping for progress throughout the year.

LG: 75.5 overall grade (5th)

We have no clue what we're doing with offensive line.

That has been my observation as well.

Looks like we're the place where Interior olineman come to die.

When other teams take our castoffs and they become serviceable definitely says something about our scheme/coaching.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/16/2025 6:11:06 PM)

Ben Goessling

The Vikings are putting Aaron Jones on injured reserve with the hamstring strain he sustained on Sunday. The move will keep Jones out through the bye week, and clear room on the active roster for Desmond Ridder. Cam Akers could be a practice squad elevation on Sunday.

If he starts for the Vikings this weekend, Carson Wentz would become the first quarterback in NFL history to start at least one game for six different teams in six consecutive seasons:

Eagles (2020)
Colts (2021)
Commanders (2022)
Rams (2023)
Chiefs (2024)
Vikings (2025)
