This won't be as popular but here is my plan B,

Plan B) Murray the starter, JJ the backup, Wentz as #3.

I disagree with a lot the statements here, McCarthy and Murray were actually neck and neck, with JJ starting to slightly pull ahead of Murray before Murray was named the starter. Had they named McCarthy the starter, I think he took would have suddenly looked really good. The coach having confidence in you can make all the difference in the world.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/16/2026 4:57:19 PM)

I still think Brad is wrong about McCarthy, and I believe McCarthy is a winner, and do not want him traded.

I think Murray will give us a wild rollercoaster ride, will be wildly good some games, but awful other games. His being short is a problem at times, but the team can still be in games provided the Flore's defense is strong.

I don't really trust Wentz to win as a backup, he has the physical capabilities, but is unlikely to run the ball, and seems to make too many bad plays or comes up short (even though he is plenty tall), there are some reasons he has never led a December or playoff run.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/17/2026 6:04:03 AM)

I still feel the same way before the draft as I do now. They should have drafted another QB like Carson Beck.

QB is always our Déjà vu.

I more than anyone have preached patience with McCarthy. He came out young, then has had injury interruptions. But it was discouraging to see him come out this year and look like he’s regressed from last year if anything. Small sample size I know. He may still end up a ‘winner’ but at this point I think he has to be considered QB3 behind Wentz. Both can be true.

As for Murray, I get all the concerns. He may not be a perfect fit. He may not be a savior. But I repeat, this team was 9-8 last year with a total trainwreck QB situation. Just having a proven veteran QB even of Murray’s stature (physical and figuratively) in there should be worth a couple more wins alone, not even factoring in what they’ve done to improve around him.

11-6. Back to the playoffs, and then you’re on your own.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/17/2026 10:50:31 AM)

It really stinks that Adams got hurt.....only positive I can see about it is it happened early enough that they can either find a replacement internally or externally.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/17/2026 10:50:32 AM)

Credible reports are coming out that he's asking for a fresh start somewhere. Not all that surprising. I'm not attached to him in anyway. Woulda been great if he panned out but "meh". It just sucks that we traded up and then wasted the #10 overall pick (if the reports are true).

Some suggested trading him for Richardson. Why would you do that now? (Richardson may end up being a cut if he isn't traded and is on his last year of his contract). At worse we have another year to decide.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/17/2026 12:09:38 PM)

I think the division is going to be a race to 11 wins, the Vikings will probably win the division with 11 wins, provided they have the edge in tiebreakers.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/17/2026 12:29:26 PM)

Still going with what I posted March 13, around when we signed Murray:

Prediction: Murray-Mania grows over the summer. KOC will not change his system. Once the games begin Murray will find some early success by going off script like Dobbs did. Defenses will adapt and bottle that up, especially because injuries and age have slowed Murray's running/scrambling ability. Murray will tease and some fans will want to resign him for a fairly large contract based on the age old yet nebulous and fanciful 'just imagine what he could do in his second season here.'

Maybe that's the best thing, but he's not going to get a meaningful fresh start with any team this year.

And his 5th year option decision is May 1. Highly unlikely any team will pick that up for $20+ million.

An NFL fifth-year option applies to the fifth year of a rookie contract, which covers a player's fourth completed regular season before entering that fifth season. Teams must decide whether to exercise the option after the player's third regular season and before May 1 of the following year (the start of the fourth league year).

Maybe he will hold out for a trade [&:]

At the end of the day, IMO, we do not have a championship caliber quarterback. Murray will have some moments.

Few things about this:
1) So you aren't going to give it 2026 for him to prove it? 2) It was Sam's 8th year when he finally proved he is a top 10 QB......guess which year this is for Kyler (who has been a top 10 QB before)? 3) If you put Kyler and Sam's career stats side by side do you think they are pretty even? 4) The biggest correlation between Kyler and Sam is that most of their career they played for poor teams with many coaching changes and not a QB friendly offense...and when they switched what happened?

Kyler Murray is an average quarterback who had crazy and unique running skills when he came into the league. Defensive coordinators learned how to defend him and he proved to be an inconsistent passer of the ball. When forced to stay in the pocket he is a below average quarterback. And, he has a bit of a whiny demeanor about him, which leads me to believe he isn't much of a leader.

Hopefully a new environment allows him to grow.

So your reasoning to refute an opinion about Kyler Murray is based on Sam Darnold, and things to link them into "they" (to include a futuristic link).

There was talk about Jayden not being a pocket passer in the past on NFL network and talk about it with Kyler on KFAN. I think I heard 13 or 14% is all Kyler was under center. Not sure if that was his career or just a certain year.

They both will be under center more to protect them more and give them the advantage of play action/fake. They weren't asked to be pocket passers in the past. They were in the shotgun or pistol a high % of the time.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/18/2026 10:13:26 AM)

Pro-Football-Reference career advanced splits (Snap Type; approximates usage via pass attempts + rushes)Shotgun: 1,772 completions on 2,622 attempts + 417 rushes.
Under Center: 202 completions on 319 attempts + 115 rushes.

This is consistent with under center being a small share of his total involvement (especially on dropbacks). Note that these are not pure snap counts of every offensive play, and pistol is not broken out separately (it generally falls under shotgun-style tracking).

pro-football-reference.com

Context by era:
Kingsbury years (2019–2022): Extremely shotgun-heavy (often 90%+), minimal under center.
Petzing/Gannon years (2023–2025 partial): Noticeable increase in under-center snaps (for run game, play-action, and versatility), though still not the majority. Team under-center rates rose, and Murray himself took more of those snaps.
Pistol appears occasionally in reporting (e.g., specific zone-read or condensed looks) but is not a primary alignment for him career-wide.

In short, across his career Kyler Murray has lined up under center only a small fraction of the time (most commonly cited in the mid-single digits to low teens percent), with the large majority of his snaps/dropbacks coming from shotgun (pistol included as a smaller portion of the non-under-center looks). Usage of under center increased later in Arizona but never approached 50%. Data sources can differ slightly by whether they track all snaps, dropbacks only, or pass plays, and by the exact cutoff date.
