Give up a 40-yard screen on 3rd and 23. And then Pace gets beat badly in the EZ for the TD.

Banks is an absolute monster that needs to work on his awareness. He's easily breaking through the line with ease, but isn't diagnosing plays well.

3rd down was brutal...

On the TD... to be fair... Dart made a really nice jump ball pass and Pace just got outjumped.

Does not look good for him.

Non-contact right knee injury on the worst field in the NFL.

stfrank -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/15/2026 1:11:34 PM)

Poor drafting and lack of depth sure shows when it's our 2's against their 2's.....

Pretty safe to say. We are fine at WR [8|]

Price looking good as a WR suddenly makes the position look crowded.

As the QB situation goes, saw something in a comment on DN that may (?) make sense. On gamedays, make Wentz the backup and JJM the #3/Emergency QB. Then if Murray is injured Wentz can step in and complete the game. For injuries to Murray that are longer than just that day, JJM starts the next game with Wentz the backup. Ideally (IMO) find someone better than Brosmer to back them up depending if Murray counts against the 53.

One can argue the former hurts grooming JJM in return for wasted game action on an old maxed out guy. But, for W/L records and in turn a coaches ability to continue his job, that might make sense because Wentz is more apt to immediately step in and calm the waters. Just get through that game.

For the latter, it gives JJM a week (+/-) to prepare.

On the surface it makes sense, but any pros/cons to this?

It likely won't happen, but this feels exactly like the right move.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/15/2026 5:35:47 PM)

I watched most of the game, with varying interest levels. Pretty typical first preseason. Sloppy, boring, a few individual standout plays.

I was mostly interested in QB play. I got on late and missed Murray completely. I was disappointed in JJ. No rhythm, bad mechanics, bad timing. And led the team to zero points. Doesn’t look like he’s progressed at all. I still think he may have a future, but he showed nothing today. Wentz was better, more solid. Not surprising he’d have an edge early since he’s a veteran and healthy again. And PA is still sickeningly pimping hard for him. I don’t get it.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/15/2026 5:50:06 PM)

Will Reichard is a MACHINE! The stats need to modify the FG metric to accommodate he and a select/very few group of kickers:

Current
1-19
20-29 etc to
50+

New
...
40-49
50-59
60+

Injury updates? Adams?

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/15/2026 6:16:23 PM)

Vikings LB Jamal Adams was carted off in Saturday's preseason opener vs. the Giants with a right knee injury, and head coach Kevin O'Connell says early signs are "not good." Minnesota signed Adams just weeks ago to boost its linebacker depth.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/15/2026 9:06:01 PM)

I don't want to type/say this but, sadly, it's how I feel. JJM is cooked in MN. He's got a really good arm but his head is all over the place. It's year 3 and he looked the exact same as his first preseason game. Some good throws, some head scratchers and some that made you LOL.

He needs a lot of work, but more importantly, a shoulder to cry on and KOC doesn't seem like he's going to give that. I know I'm a broken record but I think JJM has been the "man" his whole life, never questioned, and KOC has sort of put him in his place and he doesn't really know how to deal.

Chris Olson -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/15/2026 10:01:41 PM)

yeah, JJM may have been the "man" or just spoiled his whole life...however you want to look at it

I'm so done with him and I don't care about his feelings or whether he's salvageable...

let someone else try to do that...we have wasted too many resources on him already...I am fine going forward with Wentz as #2 and Murray ...

watching Wentz, you just feel like he is a legit NFL QB...maybe not a great one, but he has command, can read the field and and can deliver the ball

but JJM is a mess...every play feels like a crap shoot with him at the helm

I just want to trade him and get rid of a headache that I think just detracts from this team

Murray might not be the long term answer, but it feels like he has a shot at least

Karl Juhnke -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/16/2026 5:11:48 AM)

They should be fine with Murray this year if he stays healthy. The Vikings had a winning record last year, with mediocre to terrible cobbled together qb play. A solid Murray should be worth a couple more wins. Gets them back to the playoffs, chip and a chair.

After this season, who knows? Will JJ progress and be a late bloomer? Looking doubtful now but not impossible. Will Murray resurrect his career and the Vikings resign him for big money? I think that would all depend on playoff success. O’Connell still hasn’t won a playoff game. If Murray is the guy who gets that finally, it would be tough to justify letting him walk.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/16/2026 6:06:36 AM)

Murray is such a wild card.
- Not the right fit for KOCs scheme. Not as mobile as his first couple of years. Terrible advanced stats last year. Injuries. But...
- Great set of WRs to throw to. New environment can be a good thing. OL has a chance to be good.

Hope more is revealed during the joint practices w/ the Ravens this week. But QBs still wear the red jersey so wonder if they play better than they would otherwise.

+1 on rolling with Murray and Wentz.

Karl Juhnke -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/16/2026 6:24:45 AM)

As it sits right now, admittedly very early on, Wentz when completely healthy is a proficient veteran #2 QB. A guy who will give you stability and a chance to win. He’s probably the guy who should step in if Murray gets dinged up. McCarthy at this point still needs to be considered the ‘project’ unfortunately.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/16/2026 6:25:57 AM)

Regarding the posts above about JJM being "the man", that holds true for most top tier collegiate players. I think it's more about his lack of emotional/mental maturity or being overeager to the point of being frenzied. Something like that. As opposed to say Drake Maye. He seems unflappable, like his brother was playing basketball at UNC. Or look at Caleb Williams. A lot of his plays conjure up prime Fran Tarkenton and it's helter skelter out there but he has an amazing ability to make incredible plays. During those plays, he has a high degree of intention, confidence, and talent.

I always considered Williams the correct #1 of that deep qb draft class, by a good margin. I still think it’s going to play out that way even though some others got off to a quicker start. The Tarkenton comparison has some merit. Tarkenton was a mad, scrambling improviser at times, but had the composure to use it to buy time to make the correct accurate throw in the end. You don’t hold every career passing record in the books prior to the pass dominated era for no reason.

I remember back in 2024 when a ton of you people thought JJ McCarthy was going to be good. He's a champion! He's a winner! I heard all kinds of nonsense.

I never once thought the kid was the right pick. Hated the pick from the instant they said his name. In fact, I hated the pick two months before they picked him.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/16/2026 10:16:44 AM)

I have a sinking feeling about KOCs ‘elevated qb room’ (more talent / depth) compared to last year’s wentz jj brosmer.

Even overblaming Kwesi for last year, banking on reviving murry … improvement from jj … and a healthier wentz … brosmer whatever

it will all play out but I think, while murray + wentz combo with our defense can win some games, relying on their consistency and health will only get us so far, and seems fairly short term. And our development track with JJ + Brosmer seems to need a do over.

For me, tossing out highly uninformed premature projections, 2026 seems like an inevitable rollercoaster ride that ends way too soon. And then we are trying to elevate our qb room next year with 2-3 new options.

Tom Sykes -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/16/2026 10:39:36 AM)

Maybe its just my whiny negative nelly preseason jitters.

I apologize … not trying to make it about me … trying to express a viewpoint.

Unlike others.

We come here to talk about the Vikings, you come here to talk about yourself...

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/16/2026 11:47:27 AM)

In his first NFL preseason game, Rams first-round pick Ty Simpson has completed 21-of-25 passes for 190 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.

Yes, it was against 2s and 3s, yes the low yardage is because it was a lot of checkdowns and it was mostly single reads.

But still, McVay put him in the best possible position to succeed.

nfrosty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/16/2026 12:47:25 PM)

Watched the game out west on an NFL+ feed. It was the Giants local broadcast and their commentators were terrible. They gave very little play by play info and mostly babbled on about the Giants good old days. JJM didn't look good at all. Was he leading our second string offense against the Giants first string defense? I noticed the Giants kept their first string offense in longer but wasn't sure about the defense. Like I said the Giants local feed commentators were mostly worthless.

dontplaymista -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/16/2026 12:54:51 PM)

Yeah I'm sorry but McCarthy is actual poop. Still slow to snaps/getting the play off, same slow progression, same air turdballs in a clean pocket with bad throwing mechanics. He could not get the ball moving against future Amazon Warehouse workers... the second Wentz stepped in the offense started actually being productive. I'm pretty sold on JJM being QB3 at this point. Maybe we can get a 7th for him or something next year...

Also Ivan Pace stinks.

marty -> RE: General Vikes Talkk (8/16/2026 4:39:46 PM)

I want to reiterate that I 100% agree with Bill's plan on handling the QB situation with regards to starting and backup status, it is simply brilliant, therefore I doubt it will be used.

Plan A) Bill's plan.
