Bad preparation and game-planning from our head coach. With a rookie QB (basically), you know the other team is going to bring the house. It was the same problems we saw in the final two games last season when the o-line was horrific. The patterns are too deep. You can't keep running guys 20-25 yards down field if you aren't going to give your quarterback ample protection. Either the quarterback is going to try to force it or get sacked.

O'Connell is either stubborn or stupid. You gotta make in-game adjustments. Did we run one slant pattern all night? One crossing pattern? Or was McCarthy just not seeing them?

Exactly!

And our defense did not attack in the same way atnaltA did. They played like they were going after some vet QB.

Injuries. Bad KR decisions. Dumb penalties.

Very disappointing.

The kick return game had ne irritated. Let's keep trading starting at the 35 for starting at the 18.

After you see they actually cover kicks really well---you sit on it.

Three kicks into the EZ, three kicks out. On the last kick we got the beloved touchback but had an illegal formation penalty. How can you not line up properly for a kickoff return?

But just overall, I think any team should take the touchback and get the ball on the 35.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/15/2025 11:08:42 AM)

Bears win loses some luster after watching Detroit score SEVEN offensive TDs against them.

That's after struggling to score 13 against Green Bay the week before.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm. Comments folks?

Game was earily similar to the Rams playoff game.

A whole lot of players need to play better, especially the QB.

You ask is it KOC or JJ? Our in-house film expert watched the all-22 this AM. JJ had guys open & sometimes deep. His comments, "Missed screen to Aaron Jones that likely scores from 60, Nailor double-move would have scored from 40. No pressure on either-JJ looked right at them

Yes. I had a couple friends at the game. He didn't throw to some wide open guys or was too late on others.

Nailor throw could have changed the outcome. 72 yarder that he had 4 steps on CB.

The most glaring misses was A Jones and Nailor but All 22 had to show a ton more. That being said he threw a couple of missiles.....one to JJ right before 1st half and another to Theilen on 3rd and 18 that shows the talent.

David Levine -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/15/2025 11:40:15 AM)

Why was the offense so rough? The Vikings have played eight quarters this season and managed at least one touchdown in only one of them. Their three-touchdown explosion in the fourth quarter against the Bears in Week 1 got them a victory, but they were inept throughout Sunday night's game. It's easy to blame the growing pains of quarterback J.J. McCarthy, in his first year as the starter, and he played a big role by taking six sacks and throwing two interceptions. He also had an off-target rate of 24%; the league average in 2024 was 15%. But the issues were more widespread. Injuries forced the Vikings to finish the game with their second-string center (Michael Jurgens) and third-string left tackle (Walter Rouse), and tailback Aaron Jones Sr. left because of a strained hamstring. In the end, they managed only two possessions of more than four plays.

Trend to watch: Although not technically a trend, Vikings center Ryan Kelly suffered a concussion in the first half and was ruled out of the game. It was an especially concerning development for Kelly, who had at least three documented concussions during his tenure with the Indianapolis Colts. The Vikings signed Kelly to upgrade the position and give McCarthy a veteran safety, and now his status -- at least in the short term -- is in doubt.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/15/2025 11:43:07 AM)

Question: Why isn't it mandatory to wear special helmet cover for those with multiple concussions?

The arm talent is there. He just needs to process faster and make quicker decisions. Maybe the blind side turnstile Skule had him more worried about pass rush than the coverages.

The latest research indicates that soft-shell helmet covers like the Guardian Cap do not reduce concussion rates in high school football players during practice, despite earlier lab studies suggesting they could lessen impact forces. A large 2025 study found no significant difference in concussions between players with and without the covers, suggesting that preventing the brain from moving inside the skull is the key to preventing concussions, which the covers cannot do.

Concussions are caused by the rapid movement of the brain within the skull, and an extra layer of padding on the helmet cannot prevent this movement.

I think I read that Huber can play Center. Not sure if Jurgens is the answer.

Donovan Jackson was lights out last year at LT for OSU when they needed him to step in. I thought maybe that added to allure of drafting him if Darrisaw was not ready to start the season.

Just learning the pro game, probably too much to ask

Kwesi loves to take shots on guys with an injury history. Gink, Cahsman, Okudah, Kelly, etc May catch up with the team this year. They were very lucky in the injury department last year.

One thing about this roster. Because the drafting has been so poor, they just cannot afford a lot of injuries.

It's still a very top heavy team, built mostiy on Free Agents

Arlowe84 -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/15/2025 12:58:45 PM)

I'd expect the QB school to be pretty harsh on JJ this week. Last week there were some real failures by the offense

Certainly, they O line had their issues at times last night, seems like maybe he got skittish and was just not seeing the field.

Man, we he got bent backwards on that sack I thought for sure his knee went.

twinsfan -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/15/2025 1:39:22 PM)

JJ McCarthy will not play Sunday. Ankle injury. Wentz to start the next game.

Jeff Jesser -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/15/2025 1:47:48 PM)

The most disturbing part of yesterday wasn't even yesterday. This is 4 straight games that the offense has been shitty. Its a pattern.

Probably lucky, he got bent in some akward positions Sunday night.

As I said earlier, I almost thought he re-injured his knee at one point.

They are playing with fire if they continue to design an offense when blitzers can tee up against him
Missing another year to inury would be a blow to his development

Someone brought that up in Kfan Vent Line last night.
Going back to Detroit game it's been ugly.

If QB takes a big step back this year coach/GM, who everyone seems to love, will have 4 seasons with 0 playoff wins.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/15/2025 2:09:31 PM)

JJM's ankle injury might be a mini-blessing in disguise. Give him a game or two to listen to the playcalling, see the defenses pre-snap, the speed/timing of things, etc.

Common theme those four games?

TERRIBLE OLINE PROTECTION.

LG is better,

But LT has been a turnstile

And now C may be a 2nd string guy.

We need Darrisaw and Kelly playing or it wont matter who the QB is.

As someone said, the common denominator has been the poor QB performance.

But over half the starters this year did not start the last two games last year.

Six being Kelly, Fries, Jackson, McCarthy, Nailor, Thielen.

Throw in Mason and it's like 6.5 new starters.

I don't see a pattern with that many changes and a rookie QB.

You Missed SKULE.

Hard to see since he was essentially invisible anyway.

Bill Johanesen -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/15/2025 2:28:57 PM)

Darrisaw was injured in late Oct but they were able to win w/o him. No doubt a factor though.

If Darnold had just played average there would be no inkling of a four-game pattern. Instead he went into shock and that threw everything out the window.

Ugh, I had hoped to never see that name again. But yes.

Phil Riewer -> RE: General Vikes Talk (9/15/2025 2:57:34 PM)

So the play where O'Neil didn't even block the guy.

Was that a QB, Line, or just a miss by O'Neil.

Reasoning is what line checks were being done by Kelly up to that point and who did them afterwards.
Same thing with the defense.....who was doing the line checks w/o Cashman and coverage checks w/o Harry.
