If the league really wants to get to the bottom of this, and if Bill B doesn't cooperate, they certainly should call in former coaches, players, staff, assistants, etc. This certainly involved more than just the coach and camera man. Seems to me that if the NFL wanted to know exactly what they were doing (and they should) all they have to do is call in some former Patriots employees.

Cheesehead Craig -> RE:Those Lying Cheating Pats (9/13/2007 2:18:30 AM)

I know a Patriots fan who lives out in the New England area and he is just devastated, embarrassed and pissed as all hell and he's not alone. Could this be the end of BB's coaching career? :shrug: If the punishment is harsh enough, it may very well be as the fans may very well turn on him.
Personally, I'm more concerned about the allegations about the radio/frequency issues. If it is discovered that they were attempting to intercept or jam radio signals that would be a much bigger issue, IMO.
This reminded me - wasn't there a game recently, maybe just this preseason, in which a team went the entire first half without proper radio signals? Does anyone remember that? It seems like it lasted for a half and then at that point the problem was fixed. It was the visiting team for some game, but I can't remember which. I wouldn't be surprised now to find out it was a Patriots game.

Easy E -> RE:Those Lying Cheating Pats (9/13/2007 2:36:35 AM)
********************************************** I didn't say he shouldn't be punished, in fact, I think he should be. I'm saying, if this was common knowledge around the league, like people are saying now, it certainly could have been used against him by oppossing teams. Coaches tend to be paranoid, hell, they even hide their mouths when calling plays in fear of some gifted lip reader catching them from accross the field. To think they are not using decoy signals, multiple signal callers and dummy signals is naive. My point was that I don't think there was a big advantage gained. Rules were apparently violated and if guilty he should be punished. Personally, I'm more concerned about the allegations about the radio/frequency issues. If it is discovered that they were attempting to intercept or jam radio signals that would be a much bigger issue, IMO.
Gotcha! I'm glad I misunderstood you, I kinda thought you'd be on that side of thing. I do think that one of the reasons this is becoming more common knowledge is that a lot of ex-Patriot assistants are getting their own teams now. I think up until that point, some people might have suspected, but without knowing for sure. Once guys like Cromel, etc are out there, some probably just did their best to avoid letting Bill do it to them but kept quiet out of loyalty, but some like Mangini spilled the beans. And on the radio frequencies, I totally agree. I have no doubt they were trying to do it... getting evidence they actually did it will be hard. Heck, the guy stealing signs was dressed for escape, I think this is a totally planned scheme to cheat, and what they'll be able to prove is just the tip of the iceberg. Stealing radio signals? Why even bother to play the game then? That's just disgusting. It's going to be difficult to get former Patriots coaches to admit they cheated, IMO. They will mostly deny it. "Maybe it happened, but I didn't know about it." I think most of them are prepared to just deal with cheatin Bill once a year. Mangini probably lost it because the idea of having Bill do it to him for the rest of his career, twice a year, was too much to bear. Unless, of course, Goddell decides that a code of conduct for coaches is as important as it is for players. If he kinda halfasses his way through this and gives Bill B a minor slap (after already warning him), it's going to be pretty hypocritical. You wanted to be the law and order commish, here's a real chance to prove it.

Steve Lentz -> RE:Those Lying Cheating Pats (9/13/2007 4:13:14 AM)

The more I get to know BB the less respect I have for him. Unfortunately in sports, business, and life the win at all cost way is becoming increasingly familiar.

JamieH -> what to do? (9/13/2007 5:09:39 AM)

I don't envy the commish right now. Since it is obvious he has evidence that Bellicheck is guilty, he is in a serious conondrum... Sentence too light... Gives the impression that black athlete gets blasted and white coach gets a sweetheart deal. Risk alienating your fan base. Sentence too strict... Boston is one of the biggest media markets in the country, do they really want to weaken the Patriots? Given Krafts power, does he have the authority to? I think Vick's offense is more serious, but I think that Bellichecks is more detrimental to the NFL. So, I think if Vick is suspended indefinitely, Bellicheck should be suspended indefinitely...indefinitely to what? He should have to open ALL the books, the the tapes, all the meetings, all the emails.

Viking Veterans Talk Spy Games By Tim Yotter Posted Sep 12, 2007 Two of the Vikings’ most tenured players reacted to accusations that the Patriots were filming defensive signals of the Jets during Sunday’s game between the two teams. See what Tony Richardson and Darren Sharper had to say when informed of the incident. When JetsConfidential.com broke the story Monday that the New York Jets had spotted a New England Patriots employee filming New York’s defensive signals during the game between the two teams, it made a ripple around the league. ESPN.com has reported that the Patriots could lose “multiple draft picks” over the incident. Two Vikings veterans, fullback Tony Richardson and safety Darren Sharper, said they had never heard of such tactics. “No. But I’ll tell you, you’re starting to hear some really weird things with this (Bill) Belichick, whether it’s him and Coach Childress or trading guys, stealing signals,” Sharper said. A week before the regular season began, Vikings coach Brad Childress told WCCO radio that Patriots coach Bill Belichick had asked Childress to not sign tight end Garrett Mills, whom the Patriots had hoped would clear waivers in order to sign to their practice squad. Belichick then said he was eyeing a member of the Vikings’ waived players but wouldn’t sign him if the Vikings would let Mills slide, according to Childress. The Vikings were undaunted and signed Mills to their active roster. The Patriots responded by signing linebacker rookie David Herron, whom the Vikings released, to their active roster. That apparently did go as planned, as the Patriots waived Herron earlier this week (and the Vikings have since cleared room on their practice squad by waiving linebacker Brandon Archer). But the issue at hand for the Patriots and teams around the league is preserving a level playing field, which may have been tainted if the accusations of stealing signals are true. “That’s kind of a first. That’s kind of new. I guess you try to get an advantage however you can in this league,” said Richardson, who is in his 13th NFL season. “The signals aren’t a secret, but that’s tough. From defense, I’d imagine you probably change a lot of things. I know that’s not something we do around here because if you start guessing things like that, then you start getting wrong signals and you’re calling plays that don’t even work.” Said Sharper, an 11-year veteran of the league: “I’ve never heard of a guy’s camera getting confiscated because he’s recording signals, but in this day and age in the NFL everyone is trying to get the upper hand somehow. I guess if you’re not cheating, you’re not trying.” But the issue probably won’t just go away, as the NFL is likely to act soon on the charges. Sharper also said he heard a rumor that the Patriots were practicing players that were on injured reserve in the past. That would also be against league rules. Richardson, who is a member of the league’s new Player Advisory Council, a committee made up of six current and recent NFL players, said his group isn’t likely to have much influence on the matter. “The commissioner (Roger Goodell) may ask us, but we really have no control,” Richardson said. “It’s one of those things where we want to keep the playing field as level as possible, so hopefully you can eliminate those type of things. If he ever asked me about the situation, I’d be like, ‘Hey, let’s try to get that cleaned up.’ You just want to go out and play the game and know that another team doesn’t have a competitive advantage against you.”

The only proper punishment is to make BB burn all of his hooded sweatshirts.

Belichik's presser: (this really happened) :lol: BB: "Does anyone want to talk about the upcoming game?" Reporter: "Is it going to be harder to score on San Diego without knowing their defensive signals?"

Jake Carlson -> RE:Those Lying Cheating Pats (9/13/2007 6:25:54 PM)

That's great humor. That had to come from some small town/off the wall publication or news source. There's no way one of the major beat writers would have the cajones to ask that!

Lynn G. -> RE:Those Lying Cheating Pats (9/13/2007 6:30:28 PM)

I've wondered about that. Media people seem so afraid to ask the really tough questions at these press conferences. Is there some fear that they'll be locked out of future press conferences if they tick off the guy behind the podium? I'll bet there are so many times they'd love to throw a zinger like the one above.

Jeff Jesser -> RE:Those Lying Cheating Pats (9/13/2007 6:52:46 PM)

Yeap. Fear of loosing the inside edge thus loosing the story. Even a guy like Jim Rome (who claims to just tell it like it is and ask any question) kisses certain guests butts. He'll rip on a lot of people but he keeps enough "friends" to continue to have a job.

Easy E -> RE:Those Lying Cheating Pats (9/13/2007 9:27:17 PM)

Toby, you're on fire! My gosh, Steak Salibury is the dumbest person on the planet. His "defense" of Cheatin Bill Belicheat is the biggest load of kaka I've ever heard. He starts shouting, as if that improves his non-points. Even the vaporheads that work with him can't believe it. They wait for him to finish about how it doen't matter, etc. Then (amazingly) one asks him "If all that is true, then why did he" Steakman "WHY DID HE DO IT? I KNOW. Let me tell you, back when I was playing, my coach saw a reverse, and they gameplanned for over an hour trying to stop that play, even though the chances of it happening again were so small"....... My God the man is a moron. First, his answer had nothing to do with the question, and second, he's stupid if he thinks drilling a defense to prevent a reverse is a waste of time. Of course, he also thinks Eli shouldn't play because Lorenzo's a good QB that can win in this league. How Rich Gannon lost his job to this chowder-head is a mystery.

Toby Stumbo -> RE:Those Lying Cheating Pats (9/13/2007 9:33:08 PM)

Did he seriously say this? Wow, he's gotta be trying to get ESPN to fire him. They've shown they're not going to fire him for taking cell phone self-portraits for all the ladies in the office, so he's now trying to see if they'll get rid of him for zero football credibility!

Reporter: "Is it going to be harder to score on San Diego without knowing their defensive signals?"
Wish I could see that video clip - that's even better than the Coors Light commercials! Speaking of - do those coaches get paid? I would imagine they do but since it makes some of them look stupid I wonder... I could see an awesome parody of those commercials surrounding the spygate topic with fake questions being asked of Bilicheck about the scandel followed by punchline answers he really gave. Love to see something like this on YouTube.

Toby Stumbo -> RE:Those Lying Cheating Pats (9/13/2007 9:58:18 PM)

Oh, they have to do that Steve. I'm willing to bet they will. :rofl:

The tale of Shady Brady and Bill Belicheat Great YouTube Video mocking them.

They've shown they're not going to fire him for taking cell phone self-portraits for all the ladies in the office, so he's now trying to see if they'll get rid of him for zero football credibility! That was the other topic I listened to "Should Eli play". Steakers take was that if Eil was 100%, he should play, but if he's only 80 or 90 percent, no way, because Lorenzo is a good backup and can get the job done. He thinks that "maybe" the league should fine Cheatin Bill Belicheat $50k, but that other than a small fine, the league should just forget about it. He loves what the commish has done with suspending players, but you can't blame the cheater for just tyring to get ahead, and besides, it didn't make a single bit of difference anyway. Just forget about it and move on. :roll: He went through the whole scenario of what it would take to get the play calls stolen, how you'd have to get them into the players, how it would take at least 15 minutes.... he ended it with saying "If you can get all that done... well then (I swear he was going to say "then you deserve to get away with it" but thought better of it) you must walk on water!" Hello? Bueller??? According to you guys, Cheatin Bill Belicheat DOES walk on water. The other thing I love, is that the same guys who prattle on about how it didn't really affect the game, they were winning anyway, they would have won all those (ahem.. THREE POINT!) Super Bowls anyway, and you shouldn't really punish Cheatin Bill Belicheat for trying to get ahead.... these same knuckleheads then play the "If the Steelers, Jets, and Chargers knew this was going on, why didn't they say so earlier?" card. HELLO? Maybe because A) they didn't have proof and B) they assumed that if they made accusations without proof to back it up, people would argue that they're just whining, the Patriots would have beaten them anyway, and besides, what punishment would you give Bill anyway, it's not that big a deal. And they'd have been right, because ignoramuses are making that argument even when caught red-handed. Rumors of opponents headsets not working, of Cheatin Bill stealing the entire scripting, etc, have been around for a while now. The problem is that nothing covers up stink like winning, that the Patriots have a powerful, rich owner, that Bill B wields a lot of power himself, and that they have a popular, large fan base. Making accusations against them without proof would lead to people laughing at you, like they did at Denny for the Giant fiasco. But this is a much bigger deal now. Rumors of Cheatin Bill's antics had already reached the commish's ears, which is why he gave the warning. That Bill did it anyway, proves that he is an egomaniac that thinks he's above the rules, and that gaining this advantage is HUGE and a large factor in why they won so many close games. Mark my words, they may not be able to prove it, but Cheatin Bill Belicheat was stealing not just signs, coverages and formations from the defense, but they were trying to wiretap and get the opponents offensive plays as well. The reason this guy is the biggest paranoid freak with regards to this stuff is because he knows just how damaging, and how it can control the outcome of a game, if you have it. And he was determined to not let other teams get it, while doing everything in his power to get it for himself. The only question is, what will the league do about it, and will anyone care? The NFL is pretty much the teflon league, their players can use pdh's, kill people, and squeeze the fans for every buck, and no one cares. If a cheating scandal like this goes like the Sean Steakman's want it to, the NFL is truly untouchable.

Jeff Jesser -> RE:Those Lying Cheating Pats (9/13/2007 10:31:43 PM)

I would take a long hard look at Mangini and Cronell too. The apple doesn't.......
