Frankly, Joe Coleman is a cognitively impaired basketball player. So little situational awareness.

Williams isn't much better.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/26/2013 3:26:18 PM)

Could that loss have tasted any worse?  The Badgers' go-ahead basket was made with zeroes on the shot clock when the shooter released the ball.  But for some reason completely unclear to me, it couldn't be reviewed.  Then Mbakwe makes the last-second shot to tie the game.  But he's clobbered so badly before the shot that it's called off for a foul.  His wrist is too hurt to take the free throw, which temporarily sounds like decent news.  But no, Bo Ryan, in a rule that makes no sense, gets to choose the free throw shooter himself.  And just to tease us, Williams makes the first free throw.  But of course he misses the 2nd, and we lose by 1.  [X(][X(][X(][X(][X(][X(]

I'm pissed.

Did Mbakwe's "shot" really go in? I missed that.

The rule itself makes sense. You shouldn't be able to feign an injury in that situation just so Andre Hollins (or whoever) can shoot in your place.

Yes, the shot went in.

The rule doesn't really prevent much of anything, because the worst free thrower could still fake an injury.  Mbakwe was legitimately hurt because of the cheap tactics of the Badgers.

When did this rule go into place?  When I was growing up, I know you used to be able to pull whoever you wanted off the bench.  And that's what the BTN announcers initially thought too, as they were saying Ahanmisi would be coming in to shoot the free throws.

Even worse, why can't they review the shot clock violation with 2 seconds left in the game!??!?!  That makes NO SENSE AT ALL!

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/26/2013 8:41:14 PM)

Thankfully I was watching my kids compete in tournaments today and missed this mess.

Our school teams won 1st(boys) 3rd(girls) and Sportsmanship award.

Good for you and your kids. Much more enjoyable I'm sure.

Good one to miss. In case you're wondering, The Magician scored 2 Free Throws and collected 4 rebounds today.

ugh.

Some senior leadership. He had a good start to the year. Now this.

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/27/2013 12:54:56 PM)

Losing to Indiana there and Michigan here was no shame. Losing to severely less talented teams like Northwestern and Wisconsin immediately after is inexcusable. These are teams that are not talented enough to impose their own games and survive by disrupting the other team's game. In six years Tubby has not figured out the Northwestern 1-3-1 zone. That is beyond pathetic for an alleged coaching legend.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/28/2013 11:33:48 AM)

I can't watch Gopher hoops anymore. Let me know if they beat Nebraska.

How could he have some great games early on?
He did.
Mirage?
Unconsciousness?
Seriously .... what's happened to some of these guys?
This has "massive collapse" written all over it.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/28/2013 12:57:57 PM)

Dropped to 23 in AP poll

Wish they'd drop out.

How many wake up calls do they need?

SoMnFan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2013 11:11:34 AM)

Michigan #1
Not sure if that should make us happy how close we are, or disappointed that we let that one get away as well ....

Guest -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2013 5:24:30 PM)

Gophers should be able to crush Nebraska but they, Nebraska, are coming off a 15 point victory against Northwestern played in Lincoln.

Northwestern was a team the Gophers should have handled easily.

Which Gopher team will show up tonight?

He is not there yet and he is coaching at a school where football is number 1, but I do expect Tim Miles to improve Nebraska's program.

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/story/_/id/8891859/big-12-athletic-directors-discuss-pros-cons-staying-10-teams

IRVING, Texas -- Big 12 athletic directors spent several hours Monday discussing the pros and cons of maintaining their 10-team configuration or eventually making additions to the conference -- or maybe doing something in between.

Our institutions of higher learning........

The Big 10 conference has 12 schools in its conference

The Big 12 conference has 10 schools in its conference

This is what happens when you let kids use calculators in all their math classes and the result is the kids fail to memorize their math facts. And they become athletic AD's and can't even count.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2013 8:16:04 PM)

I love this team when they're rolling!!

p.s. Am I skitsofrenik?

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2013 8:49:11 PM)

Back to being frustrated again.  Should certainly be up by more than 10 with 1:30 left in the 1st half.  [X(][X(]  And I have a feeling it will be even closer when we get to halftime.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2013 8:50:07 PM)

We should be CRUSHING them.  And we're not.  In fact, I see us letting them hang in til the end.  Sad.

twinsfan -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2013 8:52:18 PM)

Thankfully that reverse layup went in.

Still much more nervous about this game than I should be.

Bench got outscored big time. No D on their shooter. Not much perimeter D, period.

Smart team, these Gophs.

Man to man?

NEB wants to win, they go zone.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2013 9:52:45 PM)

Better 2nd half, to me, despite "only" scoring 40 more points.

Defeat a team you're supposed to. Be convincing about it.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2013 10:05:03 PM)

From Doogie's chat

Comment From Derek Rick
Is Tubby Smith on the hotseat for the Gophers?

1:39
Doogie: Since they're still paying Monson, Mason, and Brew, and it'd take 2.5 million dollars to buy him out, I don't think so.

However, if he doesn't win an NCAA game... and Teague knows Shaka will come here, all bets are off.

Comment From Alex
Why would Shaka come to the Gophers when he can just wait for a big name program to fire someone and get a seven figure contract?

2:04
Doogie: He LOVES Teague and Mike Ellis. Practice facility is coming. Class of 2014 and 2015 is great locally.

He said no to Illinois because the Chicago AAU scene is such a mess. I don't think Shaka is at VCU for the long-term.

Shaka Smart at the U? That would be AWESOME!

TJSweens -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/29/2013 10:40:53 PM)

It would sure beat the hell out of Flip succeeding Tubby.

MarkWren -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/30/2013 7:49:45 AM)

Agreed. I don't think Flip's heart would be into recruiting HS players, at his age.

Mr. Ed -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/30/2013 8:32:49 AM)

I am hopeful the new AD can see that about Flip and would pursue someone like Shaka.

And if Tubby flirts again this year, LET HIM GO

Lynn G. -> RE: Gopher Basketball (Mens) (1/30/2013 9:16:30 AM)

I'll be attending my first Gopher Basketball game on Sunday vs. Iowa. I'm looking forward to getting an inside peek at The Barn, and hopefully a decisive Gopher victory over Iowa.
